You do not have to convert an MPEG-2 file just because you want to upload it to YouTube: YouTube lists MPEG-2 among its supported formats. But converting to H.264 in an MP4 container is a practical choice when you want to follow YouTube’s recommended upload settings. The steps below cover ordinary playlist videos first, then explain why a live-stream workflow is different.
First, decide what “YouTube playlist stream” means
For an ordinary YouTube playlist, you upload video files and arrange the resulting videos in a playlist for on-demand playback. Convert the file if you want an H.264/MP4 upload or need to address a source-specific issue; MPEG-2 alone does not require conversion. YouTube’s supported file formats page lists MPEG-2.

If you mean sending a live broadcast to YouTube, that is a separate delivery method. A live HLS feed is made of media segments and playlists, not simply a queue of uploaded MP4 files. See Live HLS is not an uploaded playlist before choosing that route.
Convert an MPEG-2 file to H.264 with FFmpeg
1. Inspect the source before encoding
Check the source’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, scan type (progressive or interlaced), and color characteristics. MPEG-2 files can differ in these properties, and some contain multiple audio tracks. FFmpeg’s ffprobe can report media and stream details; for example, run ffprobe -hide_banner input.mpg and review the stream sections in its output. If you have multiple tracks, decide which you actually want in the upload.
2. Run a basic H.264/MP4 conversion
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream. Change it if the video you need is another stream.-map 0:a?includes audio streams if present; it may include more than one. Adjust the mapping if you want only a specific audio track. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional when the file has no audio.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder. The FFmpeg build installed on your system must includelibx264; encoder availability varies by build. Check withffmpeg -encoders.-crf 18and-preset mediumare example quality and encoding-speed choices, not YouTube requirements. Lower CRF values generally produce larger files at higher quality; slower presets trade encoding time for compression efficiency.-pix_fmt yuv420psets 4:2:0 pixel format, which matches YouTube’s recommendation for upload chroma subsampling.-c:a aac -b:a 192kencodes audio as AAC at the chosen bitrate. YouTube supports AAC-LC among its recommended audio options.-movflags +faststartmoves MP4 metadata toward the beginning of the file, which can help playback begin sooner when served online.
Use a different output filename, as in the example, so the original MPEG-2 file remains intact. FFmpeg documents MPEG-2 support, H.264 encoding through available external libraries, and stream selection with -map; consult the format documentation and FFmpeg manual if you need to adapt the command.

- Including a variety of helpful editing tools
- Support of more than 130 file formats, more than 40 presets for various devices (Smartphones, Smart TVs)
- Compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7
3. Preserve the source frame rate and handle interlacing
YouTube says content should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Avoid forcing an arbitrary output frame rate: inspect the source and keep it consistent. YouTube also says, “Interlaced content should be deinterlaced before uploading.” If inspection shows interlaced footage, choose a deinterlacing filter and field order appropriate to that file rather than applying a filter blindly to progressive footage.
4. Check the result before uploading
Confirm that the MP4 plays, the intended video and audio tracks are present, and the output has the expected dimensions and frame rate. If you selected one audio track, verify it is the one you intended. Then upload the resulting video through YouTube’s creator workflow and add it to the intended playlist. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current playlist controls in your account.

Use YouTube’s upload recommendations as a quality checklist
YouTube recommends MP4 as the container and H.264 video for uploads. Its encoding guidance also recommends progressive scan, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio; two consecutive B frames; a closed GOP; CABAC; variable bitrate; and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. For SDR, it recommends BT.709 color. These are recommendations, not universal minimums or a guarantee that every source will look identical after YouTube processes it. See YouTube’s video and audio upload encoding settings for current details.
If you choose target-bitrate encoding rather than the example’s quality-based CRF setting, use the recommendation for your resolution and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current guide specifies 8 Mbps for SDR 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. These are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not required minimums. The same guide lists 384 kbps for stereo audio.

Live HLS is not an uploaded playlist
For a conventional YouTube playlist, the delivery unit is an uploaded video file; MP4/H.264 is YouTube’s recommended upload combination. In YouTube’s HLS live-ingestion workflow, a live encoder sends segments according to an HLS protocol. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires audio and video muxed in M2TS, supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, and permits only closed GOP. The HLS media playlists and segments must also follow the documented ingestion rules.
| Path | Purpose | Delivery | Container / media format | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uploaded playlist video | On-demand playback in a YouTube playlist | Upload a file | YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video | Convert if desired, upload, then add the video to a playlist |
| Live HLS ingestion | Send a live broadcast to YouTube | Send HLS playlists and media segments | HLS guide requires muxed M2TS media; H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio | Configure an encoder and follow YouTube’s HLS protocol, including closed-GOP requirements |
Converting an MPEG-2 file to an MP4 does not, by itself, make it a valid HLS live input. Choose the workflow based on whether viewers should watch an uploaded video on demand or receive a live broadcast.

Common conversion problems and fixes
“Unknown encoder ‘libx264’”
Your FFmpeg build may not include the libx264 encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders for an available H.264 encoder, then use an encoder your installation provides or install a build that includes libx264.
The converted video looks combed or has jagged motion
The source may be interlaced. Confirm its scan type and field order, then deinterlace with a suitable filter before upload. Do not deinterlace progressive footage unnecessarily.

The output is missing sound or contains the wrong language
Review the source’s audio streams and the output mapping. The example includes all available audio streams; specify the desired stream explicitly if the source has multiple tracks, then verify the encoded file before uploading.
The converted file is much larger or smaller than expected
The example uses CRF quality-based encoding rather than a fixed video bitrate, so output size depends on the footage and settings. For a target bitrate workflow, use YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, and allow for the source’s detail and motion to affect perceived quality.
The live feed is rejected despite having H.264 video
H.264 alone does not satisfy the HLS ingestion requirements. Check that the live input uses muxed M2TS media, AAC audio, closed GOP, and HLS playlists and segments that comply with YouTube’s protocol.
Copyright and playlist eligibility still matter
Changing the codec does not grant rights to the video or audio. Before uploading, make sure you have the necessary rights or permission for every included element and check YouTube’s copyright policies. A playlist also does not change whether a video complies with YouTube’s channel monetization policies, including rules concerning reused content; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies if monetization is relevant.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service that plays uploaded videos to YouTube. The basic flow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream continues from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
