If your source is HDR, tone-map or convert it to SDR before or during encoding; changing an output bit-depth setting alone does not guarantee a correct HDR-to-SDR conversion. YouTube’s encoder guidance distinguishes the SDR target from its separate 10-bit HDR workflow. YouTube’s live encoder settings and HDR live-stream guidance provide the relevant targets.
What “10-bit video” means for an 8-bit stream
Bit depth describes how many tonal or color values a signal can represent; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the footage is HDR. A 10-bit source may be SDR, or it may use an HDR transfer function such as PQ or HLG. Check the source’s color properties before choosing a conversion.

The target is the signal you send to YouTube, not simply the properties of the original file. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance specifies 8-bit and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its HDR instructions instead call for 10-bit HDR signaling. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for different devices and networks, but that delivery step does not turn an incorrectly signaled HDR input into a properly prepared SDR signal.
Prepare HDR footage for a standard SDR stream
- Confirm the intended output. Choose this workflow if you want a conventional SDR live stream, rather than HDR playback on supported devices.
- Inspect the source. Determine whether it is genuinely HDR and, if so, whether its transfer function is PQ or HLG. Do not treat “10-bit” and “HDR” as interchangeable.
- Convert HDR to SDR with an appropriate tone map. Use a documented conversion in your editor, media pipeline, or encoder to map highlights and color into the SDR range. The YouTube guidance cited here does not prescribe a universal tone-mapping algorithm or software-specific controls. The correct steps depend on the source and the exact encoder, editor, and version.
- Set the outgoing stream to SDR. Configure 8-bit output and Rec. 709, then follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the remaining stream settings.
- Test the result. Run a test with representative movement and audio. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, then inspect the result on an SDR display before the actual event.
Do not assume that selecting “8-bit” performs the tone map. If the source is HDR, a bit-depth change without a suitable color and dynamic-range conversion can produce clipped highlights or an unsatisfactory image.

SDR and HDR YouTube Live targets
| Setting | Standard SDR stream | HDR stream, if that is the intended result |
|---|---|---|
| Bit depth | 8-bit | 10-bit |
| Color signaling | Rec. 709 | BT.2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matched to the source |
| Codec | Use a codec supported by YouTube’s current live encoder guidance | HEVC (H.265), per YouTube’s HDR guidance |
| OBS example | Configure SDR output; source-specific HDR tone mapping still requires suitable controls for the chosen software and version | YouTube documents an OBS 30.1-or-later HDR setup using compatible hardware encoding, HEVC Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG |
| Viewer presentation | SDR | HDR on supported devices; YouTube says unsupported devices receive an SDR presentation |
The HDR column is not a recommendation to change an SDR project into HDR. It describes YouTube’s separate HDR path. See YouTube’s HDR live-stream requirements for the documented configuration.
Live settings and test checks
For a standard SDR stream, prioritize the 8-bit Rec. 709 output target, then verify the rest of the encoder configuration against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that every encoder or connection will behave identically.

- Use a test stream containing the kinds of motion and audio that will appear in the real broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before and during the event.
- Review color and highlights on an SDR display, while remembering that screens and viewing conditions vary.
- Do not rely on YouTube’s playback transcoding to correct a mismatched incoming color signal.
Common problems and what to check
The image looks washed out or highlights are clipped
Check whether HDR footage was actually tone-mapped to SDR before output. Confirm that the outgoing signal is Rec. 709 and that the conversion matches the source’s PQ or HLG characteristics. A bit-depth setting by itself is not a tone-mapping method.

The source is 10-bit, but you are unsure whether it is HDR
Inspect its color metadata or project/export settings rather than inferring HDR from bit depth. If it is 10-bit SDR, prepare the outgoing stream for the SDR target without applying an HDR conversion that the footage does not need.

The preview differs across screens
YouTube creates multiple playback formats, and displays vary in capability and calibration. Check the incoming signal and preview first; do not expect every viewer’s screen to reproduce an identical image.
The stream has unstable delivery or visible interruptions
Check YouTube’s live stream-health information, encoder status, and network conditions. Test the full setup before the event; YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your finished video is prepared for the SDR target and you want it to loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist running from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the uploaded file rather than broadcasting a camera, and it does not replace the need to prepare HDR footage correctly before upload.
