Run a metadata check with FFprobe, attempt a full decode with FFmpeg, then play the clip through the OBS source you plan to use. These checks can reveal many damaged or unreadable files before a live run, but a successful command-line test is not proof that every track or OBS playback path will work.
1. Inspect the file with FFprobe
FFprobe reports information about the container and streams, and can show an error encountered while probing. It answers whether FFmpeg can open and recognize the file; it does not decode every frame.

ffprobe -v error -show_error -show_format -show_streams -of json "clip.mp4"
Replace clip.mp4 with your file path. Keep quotation marks around paths that contain spaces. The command requests error details, format information, and stream information in JSON. FFprobe documents these reporting options at FFprobe Documentation.
- If the file cannot be opened or the output contains an error section, investigate before adding it to OBS.
- If it reports plausible format and stream details, that is a useful first check, not proof that the complete clip decodes.
2. Attempt to decode the clip without creating a copy
Use FFmpeg’s null muxer to read and decode the input while discarding the output:

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
ffmpeg -v error -i "clip.mp4" -f null -
The null muxer produces no output file. This makes the command useful for surfacing reported demuxing or decode errors without converting or overwriting the original. FFmpeg documents the null muxer and demonstrates decoding to it in its Null muxer documentation.
Let the process finish. If you stop it early, you have only checked the portion read so far. Review any error messages and the process exit status. A clean run is evidence that FFmpeg decoded the streams it selected on that machine; default stream selection might not exercise alternate tracks, and it does not guarantee flawless playback in OBS.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
3. Play it through the OBS source you intend to use
Command-line checks and OBS playback answer different questions. Test the actual source and local software setup that your scene or playlist will use, watching and listening through the clip rather than checking only that it starts.

OBS’s Media Source plays a media file in a scene. The OBS Project Knowledge Base lists these supported video extensions for Media Source: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. An extension match alone does not establish that a particular file is intact or that its codecs will play correctly. See OBS Project: Media Sources (dated 2022-01-11).

- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
For a multi-item playlist: VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist of items and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Add or temporarily load the clip in the intended source, play it through, and check for missing or frozen video, playback interruptions, and absent or distorted audio. If you need a playlist, test the VLC Video source rather than assuming that a successful Media Source test covers it.
How to interpret a failed or clean check
- FFprobe cannot open or identify the file: the file may be incomplete, damaged, or in a format FFmpeg cannot recognize. The probe alone does not establish which cause applies.
- FFmpeg reports errors during decoding: note the messages and where they occur. Keep the original unchanged while investigating; do not treat a converted copy as a repair unless you have verified it.
- FFmpeg finishes cleanly, but OBS fails: investigate the OBS source and its playback dependencies, including VLC installation and matching 32-bit or 64-bit versions where applicable. Container or codec compatibility can also differ across playback paths.
- All checks pass: that is useful evidence, not a universal guarantee. The commands check streams FFmpeg selects in that environment; the OBS test checks the intended local playback route.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel running uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from checking or playing a local OBS playlist: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
