Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractice in two tracks: first solve problems without assistance so your own reasoning is measurable, then rehearse the exact AI-enabled workflow only after the employer confirms that AI is allowed for that interview stage. An AI-allowed interview still evaluates how you frame requirements, direct a tool, verify its output, debug failures, understand the final code, and explain trade-offs. Treat generated code as an untrusted draft, not as proof that the problem is solved.
What an AI-allowed coding interview is really testing
Permission to use ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or another assistant changes the workflow, not the standard of evidence. You remain responsible for the result and for being able to explain it. Interviewers can see whether you are driving the solution or merely accepting text that you do not understand.

Problem framing and requirement discovery
Before asking for code, restate the problem in your own words. Identify inputs, outputs, constraints, error handling, mutability requirements, and any performance target. Ask clarifying questions when the prompt is ambiguous. A useful opening sounds like: “I understand that the input is a stream of events, that order matters, and that duplicate IDs should be ignored. Is that correct?” An assistant can help brainstorm questions, but you must decide which assumptions are valid.

Prompt quality and scope control
Vague prompts produce generic solutions. Strong candidates give the assistant the contract they have already established, the language and version, the interfaces that must remain unchanged, and the narrow action they want. They can also stop the tool from wandering into an overengineered design. Asking for one edge case or a review of one failing test reveals more judgment than requesting a complete solution at the start.

Verification, debugging, and code comprehension
You are expected to run examples, create adversarial tests, inspect time and space complexity, and check that APIs actually exist in the stated language version. Generated code may contain a plausible but nonexistent function, an off-by-one error, a race condition, or an assumption that was never agreed. You should be able to point to the defect, explain why it occurs, and repair it without blindly regenerating the entire program.
Communication and authenticity
Explain what the assistant suggested, what you changed, and why your final approach is correct. Keep your own experiences, projects, metrics, and lessons in behavioral answers. Anthropic, Pfizer, Shell, and ServiceNow all emphasize truthful, authentic representation; an assistant must not invent evidence of skill for you.
Policy compliance
Permission is specific to a stage, a tool, and sometimes a feature. A take-home exercise that permits code completion does not automatically permit a hidden assistant in a live screen. Recording, transcription, documentation lookup, and code generation can each have separate rules. Silence in an invitation is not permission.

Confirm exactly what is allowed before practicing the live workflow
Read the preparation document and calendar invitation, then ask the recruiter or interviewer before the round. Save the answer with your interview notes so you can refer to the exact wording.
- Ask: “Is generative AI allowed in this specific round?”
- Ask which named tools and features are permitted. Distinguish chat, inline completion, web search, documentation lookup, debugging, and code generation.
- Ask whether the allowance applies to a live interview, a take-home project, an online test, or only a separate exercise.
- Ask whether you must share your screen, disclose prompts, or keep a transcript.
- Ask whether recording or third-party transcription is allowed. Do not record merely because a tool offers the feature.
- Save the written response, and follow the stricter interpretation if the instructions conflict.
These questions matter because employers publish different rules for different stages. The following examples illustrate why a general “AI is allowed” assumption is unsafe.

| Organization | Preparation guidance | Live interview or assessment rule |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Encourages using Claude to research the company, generate practice questions, and refine explanations. | Candidate work is expected to be their own unless AI use is explicitly indicated. Its candidate guidance was updated July 10, 2025. |
| ServiceNow | Allows AI for organizing thoughts, refining application materials, and practicing interview questions. | Interviews, online tests, technical challenges, and other evaluations should be completed independently unless the instructions explicitly say otherwise. |
| Pfizer | Allows practicing questions and improving responses. | Prohibits AI from influencing coding challenges or generating answers during live or recorded interviews unless specifically permitted. |
| Ubisoft | Recommends GenAI for company research, role-specific questions, and response practice. | Prohibits AI during interviews and assessments unless specifically allowed and warns that misuse can lead to disqualification. |
| Deloitte | Allows AI as a preparation tool and for post-interview reflection. | Prohibits real-time assistance during an interview or assessment unless explicitly permitted. |
| Shell | Allows practice responses, STAR structuring, and research when the information is accurate and truthful. | Its guidance does not turn preparation permission into a blanket live-assistance allowance. |
| College Board | Does not prohibit ordinary preparation. | States that live interviews, including video screens, hiring-manager interviews, and panel interviews, should be completed without AI assistance tools or third-party recording software. |
| OpenAI | Notes that formats include pair coding, take-home projects, and technical tests. | Expectations for AI and other tools vary by interview; candidates are told what is allowed in their preparation materials. |
| Mastercard | Identifies AI-driven mock-interview platforms as an acceptable preparation use. | This preparation example does not establish permission for a Mastercard interview stage or for another employer. |
If the recruiter cannot answer before the interview, prepare as if live assistance is not allowed and bring an unaided version of your plan. You can still ask at the start of the session, before opening a tool, and follow the interviewer’s explicit direction.
Build an unaided baseline first
Your baseline prevents automation from hiding gaps. Use a representative problem at a difficulty and language close to the target role. Work in the same editor and test runner you expect to use, but keep every assistant closed.
Use a repeatable unaided sequence
- Clarify. Restate the task, list constraints, and write down assumptions. Ask what should happen for empty input, duplicates, invalid values, and very large input.
- Plan. Choose the data structure and algorithm before coding. State the expected time and space complexity and identify the invariant that makes the algorithm correct.
- Implement incrementally. Write a small, readable version. Keep the interface stable and name intermediate values so you can explain them aloud.
- Test deliberately. Run the normal example, the smallest input, a boundary case, an adversarial case, and a case that stresses the stated limit.
- Explain. Summarize correctness, complexity, alternatives rejected, and what you would change with more time.
Score the baseline
| Measure | Record after each round | Why it matters when AI is permitted |
|---|---|---|
| Framing | Questions asked, assumptions made, and missing requirements | The assistant cannot rescue an incorrectly defined problem. |
| Plan | Algorithm, data structure, invariant, and complexity target | It gives you a standard against which to judge suggestions. |
| Correctness | Tests passed and defects found | Generated output still needs independent verification. |
| Debugging | Time from failing test to identified cause | AI can propose fixes, but you must select and validate one. |
| Explanation | Whether you can describe each major line and trade-off | Comprehension is visible even when code arrived quickly. |
Keep the baseline solution and notes. Do not rewrite them with AI afterward until you have recorded what you could and could not do unaided.
Add AI in bounded roles instead of asking for the answer
Once an employer has confirmed that AI is allowed for the relevant practice format, add one role at a time. The objective is to preserve your reasoning while using the tool for feedback.
Useful bounded roles
- Interviewer: Give the problem and ask the tool to reveal requirements only when you request them. Tell it not to propose an algorithm unless you ask.
- Edge-case generator: Provide your contract and ask for adversarial inputs, without solutions. Classify each case yourself.
- Assumption challenger: Ask which unstated assumption could make your plan fail, then prove or reject the criticism.
- Test reviewer: Show a failing test and your expected result. Ask for possible causes, not a rewritten program.
- Documentation checker: Ask whether a specific API exists in the declared language and version, then verify it in the official documentation.
- Explanation coach: Ask for questions an interviewer might ask about complexity, alternatives, and trade-offs. Answer aloud before reading any suggested response.
Prompt patterns that preserve ownership
Act as an interviewer. Give me one clarification question at a time. Do not provide an algorithm or code unless I explicitly ask.
Here is my contract and plan: [brief text]. List five adversarial test cases only. For each, state the input and what a correct implementation must return.
This test fails: [test and output]. Here is the relevant function: [code]. Suggest three hypotheses, ranked by likelihood. Do not rewrite the function.
Review this solution for correctness and complexity under Python 3.12. Identify unsupported API calls or hidden assumptions, and quote the exact line that needs checking.
Replace the explanatory text in these examples with your own details. Do not paste confidential source code, proprietary data, credentials, customer information, or an employer’s unreleased prompt into a public service. If the practice platform stores transcripts, check its retention and sharing controls before using it.

Run a realistic AI-allowed mock interview
Make the session resemble the permitted format, including the editor, communication channel, screen-sharing requirement, and time pressure. A useful rehearsal has two passes: one in which you use the assistant within the stated rules and one in which the assistant is suddenly unavailable.
Prepare the environment
- Open only the tools that the written policy permits. Disable autocomplete or web search if those features are not allowed.
- Set the assistant to a neutral role and tell it not to produce a full solution unless requested.
- Use a fresh problem rather than a prompt you have memorized. Keep a visible scratch area for requirements, complexity, and tests.
- Decide in advance how you will disclose AI use: for example, “I’m asking the assistant for edge cases; I’ll evaluate them before changing the code.”
- Do not enable recording or transcription unless the organizer has explicitly approved it.
Follow a timed sequence
- Opening: Restate the problem and ask clarifying questions without assistance.
- Design: Write your algorithm, data-structure choice, complexity target, and test plan before your first prompt.
- Bounded prompting: Ask for one narrow action, such as edge cases or a review of a failing test. Read the response aloud in your own words.
- Implementation: Make the change yourself. Keep a note of which suggestion you accepted, modified, or rejected.
- Verification: Run your own tests, add a counterexample, inspect complexity, and check every unfamiliar API.
- Debrief: Explain why the final code is correct, what the tool got wrong, and what trade-off remains.
- Fallback: Close the assistant and reproduce the key idea, complexity, and tests from memory.
Have a partner act as the interviewer when possible. The partner should interrupt if you stop narrating, accept code you cannot explain, or use a feature outside the agreed rules. If you practice alone, record only permitted notes and evaluate the transcript for those same behaviors without creating an unauthorized interview recording.
Verify every generated suggestion
Verification is the dividing line between productive assistance and dependence. Use a fixed checklist so a fluent answer does not receive more trust than a rough one.
| Check | Questions to ask | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Behavior | Does it satisfy every requirement, including invalid and empty inputs? | The happy path works while duplicates or null values break the result. |
| Tests | Can I produce a counterexample without looking at the generated tests? | Examples merely repeat the prompt and miss boundary conditions. |
| Complexity | What is the worst-case time and space cost, and does it fit the constraints? | A hidden nested loop or repeated sort defeats a stated performance target. |
| API and version | Does this function, parameter, and behavior exist in the declared language version? | A plausible hallucinated method causes a compile or runtime failure. |
| State and side effects | Does the code mutate inputs, share state, leak resources, or depend on ordering? | A locally correct helper corrupts a caller’s data or fails under concurrency. |
| Readability | Can I explain each branch and name a simpler alternative? | Over-abstraction makes debugging and explanation harder than the original task. |
When a test fails, preserve the failure. State the observed result, expected result, smallest reproducing input, and your current hypothesis. Ask the assistant to critique that hypothesis rather than to replace the whole program. Then rerun the original test set and the new regression test.

| Practice method | Permission scope | Unaided fundamentals | Timed realism | Feedback and verification | Explanation practice | Privacy and access |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unaided solo problem | No external assistant | Strong; exposes real gaps | High if timed and unfamiliar | You must design tests and review your own code | Requires speaking aloud or a partner | Usually simplest to control; cost and access depend on your environment |
| Bounded AI rehearsal | Only the features explicitly allowed for the practice | Strong if planning occurs before prompting | High when the same tool and limits are used | Fast edge-case, debugging, and explanation prompts; still requires your verification | Strong when the tool plays an interviewer and you answer first | Review retention, sharing, and recording settings; program availability varies |
| Human mock interview | Set by the partner or service | Depends on whether the partner withholds hints | Closest to conversational pressure | Best for detecting unclear narration and premature prompting | Strongest for follow-up questions and trade-offs | Confirm whether the session is recorded; access and cost vary |
| AI-driven mock-interview platform | Usually preparation only unless an employer says otherwise | Depends on whether it requires an unaided first attempt | Can reproduce a fixed timed flow | Automated feedback can be consistent, but inspect its tests and explanations | Useful for repeated verbal drills | Check data retention, transcript controls, and availability; no universal price is established |
Mastercard specifically identifies AI-driven mock-interview platforms as an acceptable preparation use. That is a preparation example, not permission to use a platform during another company’s assessment.
A practical two-week training cycle
Adjust the number of sessions to your schedule; the sequence matters more than the calendar. Keep one problem log with the prompt, your unaided result, AI interventions, defects found, and final explanation.
Sessions 1–3: establish the baseline
- Complete unfamiliar problems without AI.
- For each, record the first incorrect assumption, complexity, tests, and explanation quality.
- Review language and data-structure fundamentals that caused repeated errors.
Sessions 4–6: add one bounded role
- Use the assistant only for edge-case generation in one session, documentation checks in the next, and debugging hypotheses in the third.
- Do not request a full solution. Mark every suggestion you reject and why.
- Close the tool and reproduce the algorithm and tests from memory after each session.
Sessions 7–9: rehearse the permitted format
- Use the exact tool and feature set the employer has approved, or practice unaided if no approval exists.
- Have a partner enforce disclosure, timing, screen-sharing, and recording rules.
- Compare correctness, debugging speed, edge-case coverage, and explanation quality with your baseline.
Sessions 10–12: stress and transfer
- Mix one unaided timed round with one AI-allowed timed round.
- Change the language version, interface constraint, or input scale so memorized prompts do not carry you.
- Finish every session unaided and explain the solution as if the interviewer had challenged each decision.
If AI makes you faster but your explanation score falls, reduce the assistant’s role. If it exposes more edge cases without reducing your understanding, keep that bounded role and continue testing independently.
Mistakes that can invalidate an otherwise strong performance
Using a hidden assistant
Do not conceal a real-time assistant, paste generated code into a stage that forbids help, or run an AI-generated script behind another window. If you discover that a feature is prohibited, stop using it. Tell the interviewer or recruiter what happened, follow their instruction, and be prepared to restart or complete an unaided version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming permission transfers between stages
A permitted take-home, special coding exercise, or mock platform does not authorize AI in a live screen, online test, or recorded interview. Recheck the policy for every stage.
Best Value
Letting the tool fabricate your story
An assistant may polish wording, but it must not invent projects, impact metrics, responsibilities, or explanations. Use your own facts and correct any inaccurate suggestion before you say it.
Quoting without checking
Never present an AI explanation, API detail, benchmark, or complexity claim as fact until you have tested it or verified it against the relevant documentation. A confident tone is not evidence.
Recording without consent
Third-party recording and transcription can expose confidential prompts and may violate policy. College Board explicitly bars third-party recording software in live interviews, and ServiceNow also addresses recording restrictions. Obtain explicit approval before enabling any capture feature.

- Read the stage-specific instructions again and open only permitted tools.
- At the start, confirm the AI boundary aloud if it is not already clear.
- State your plan before your first prompt or code completion.
- Disclose each meaningful use: what you asked, what you accepted, and what you verified.
- Keep a manual path available in case the tool, network, or permission changes.
- End by explaining correctness, complexity, tests, and remaining trade-offs in your own words.
The strongest candidate is not the one who produces the most generated code. It is the one who can move deliberately from an ambiguous requirement to a tested, understandable solution while respecting the employer’s rules.
