Start with the speakers arranged symmetrically around your main listening seat, forming a roughly equal-sided triangle. Keep them clear of walls and corners where the room allows, place the tweeters near seated ear height, and try a modest toe-in. Then adjust one thing at a time, listening for even bass, a centered vocal and a natural soundstage. These are starting points—not fixed rules: your speaker’s manual and the room should guide the final positions.
Set up a balanced listening triangle
Choose the seat where you listen most often, then position the left and right speakers at comparable distances from it. Begin with the speakers and seat forming a triangle; symmetry helps give centered sounds, such as a lead vocal, a stable position between the speakers.

The triangle need not be exactly equilateral. Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics recommends starting with a slightly narrower triangle in some setups, while Teufel describes an equilateral layout as a useful phantom-center starting point. Compare both if the center image is diffuse or the soundstage feels too narrow. Room dimensions and preference matter, so treat these geometries as starting positions rather than prescriptions.

Try to keep the speakers similarly spaced from the listening seat and nearby boundaries. If one speaker is much closer to a side wall than the other, the reflections and bass response may differ between channels, affecting the balance of the stereo image. When the room prevents a perfectly symmetrical layout, make the positions as balanced as practical and judge the result from the main seat.

How far apart should the speakers be?
There is no universal spacing that suits every room and speaker. Teufel Support gives about 2.4 m between floorstanding speakers as a guideline; Fyne Audio guidance gives a broader range of 1.5–4.5 m. Those recommendations differ because manufacturers may be addressing different speaker designs and room assumptions. Check your model’s manual, then adjust spacing in small steps while listening for a centered vocal and a convincing stage width.
If the speakers are too close together, the stage may feel cramped; if they are too far apart for the listening distance, the center can become diffuse. These are listening cues, not proof of a single correct measurement. Cambridge Audio’s Ollie Marshall, Head of Acoustics, advises that the listening distance should be greater than the distance between the speakers and suggests starting with a slightly narrower triangle rather than jumping straight to an equilateral one.

How far should floorstanding speakers be from walls?
Give speakers some space from walls and corners when possible. Nearby boundaries can strengthen bass, sometimes making it sound boomy; room surfaces also contribute reflections that can affect clarity and imaging. Move speakers incrementally and assess the change from your normal seat. If bass sounds too strong, try moving them farther from the wall; if it sounds thin, moving them closer may help. The effect depends on the room and speaker, so listen rather than assuming one direction will always work.

Teufel Support lists about 60–120 cm from the wall behind the speakers and 60–90 cm from side walls as minimum distances in its guidance. Fyne Audio recommends at least 1 m from side walls and 0.5 m from the rear wall. Follow your speaker’s own manual where it gives model-specific instructions, and use these figures only as attributed starting points.

In a small room, Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics says firing down the longer dimension may help bass reproduction, but the resulting proximity to side walls can compromise image clarity. Treat that as a room-dependent option, not a rule. Avoid pushing a speaker into a corner unless constraints leave no alternative; if the layout is fixed, refine toe-in and spacing and listen for differences between the two channels.
Should you angle the speakers toward the listening position?
Toe-in means turning the speakers slightly inward toward the listening area. It can improve the focus of the stereo image, but too much may make the listening area feel narrower or the stage too tightly focused. Start with a modest angle, then make small adjustments and compare center focus with stage width.

Teufel Support suggests about 15° as a starting value; Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics cites 10–15° as usual guidance. These are examples, not mandatory settings. Axiom Audio recommends changing toe-in in small increments and judging whether the center image improves without sacrificing the width that sounds natural in your room.
Set tweeter height for your listening seat
Where practical, aim to have the tweeters near ear level when you are seated in your normal listening position. The relevant height is relative to your chair and posture, not a fixed distance from the floor. Teufel Support gives approximately 91–106 cm as guidance for seated tweeter height; that range is not universal for different chairs, listeners or speaker models.

A step-by-step placement and listening check
- Check the speaker manual. Use its guidance for wall clearance and placement before applying general advice; cabinet, port and driver design can affect the recommended position.
- Choose the listening seat and wall. Identify the seat you use most. In a small room, you can compare firing down the longer dimension with other practical orientations, keeping in mind that side-wall proximity may affect image clarity.
- Establish balanced positions. Arrange the speakers symmetrically where possible and make their distances to the seat comparable. Begin with a roughly equal-sided triangle, then try a slightly narrower one if the center image or width needs adjustment.
- Adjust boundary distance. Avoid corners if you can. Move both speakers forward or back in small steps, listening for bass that is neither boomy nor thin.
- Set toe-in modestly. Turn the speakers slightly inward, then adjust the angle in small increments. Check whether a centered vocal stays fixed between them while the stage remains broad enough for your preference.
- Check seated tweeter height. Listen from your normal chair and aim for the tweeters to be near ear level where practical.
- Change one variable at a time. Use familiar music with a centered vocal. Adjust spacing, distance from walls or toe-in separately so you can tell what changed. A tape measure can help you record positions and return to a preferred setup, but it is optional.
What to listen for when comparing positions
Compare each position from the same listening seat and use the same familiar material. Focus on three outcomes:
- Bass balance: Does the low end sound controlled and even, or overly strong and boomy or weak and thin?
- Center focus: Does a centered voice appear fixed between the speakers, or does it sound diffuse or pulled to one side?
- Stage width and listening area: Does the presentation feel natural and broad enough, or so tightly focused that it only works from a narrow spot?
The best compromise may not maximize all three. Cambridge Audio’s article puts the trade-off this way: “The spot that gives you the best bass usually isn’t the spot that gives you the best stereo image, so placement comes down to finding the compromise that sounds right to you.”
When to consider room furnishings or treatment
If the sound remains harsh or muffled after placement adjustments, consider the room’s reflective surfaces. Curtains, carpets, cushions and other soft furnishings can affect reflections; Focal recommends considering absorptive and reflective materials when the sound is harsh or muffled. Dedicated acoustic treatment is a separate, conditional step: first identify the problem you are trying to address rather than assuming panels are needed.
Why speaker placement advice varies
Room size, reflectivity, speaker design and listening preference all affect placement. Manufacturer recommendations therefore provide useful starting points, not one industry-wide optimum. For example, Klipsch Support’s instruction to place speakers 12–15 feet from the main listening position applies specifically to the Klipsch Jubilee and should not be generalized to other models.
Use your manual for model-specific guidance, keep left and right placement balanced as far as the room allows, and evaluate changes from the seat where you listen. The useful position is the one that gives you the best balance of bass, center focus and soundstage in your room.
