That design enables Fold phones to open into a larger workspace and Flip phones to close into a compact device, but it also means the inner screen needs more care than a conventional cover display. Battery capacity and manufacturer video-playback estimates offer useful reference points, not a promise of how long a phone will last in your routine.
How a Samsung foldable display works
The inner screen is a stack of materials that must protect the panel while bending. Samsung describes the assembly as including a top protective film, a protective layer over the glass, Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), and an AMOLED-family display panel. The film is fixed in place and helps the surface withstand pressure; the protective layer helps resist external impacts and prevent fragmentation; UTG supplies a smooth glass surface in a form thin enough for a foldable design. AMOLED pixels emit their own light.

Some models also use a digitizer layer, but Samsung says this is model-dependent and that Z Flip devices do not have one. Samsung has not published a complete current-model layer recipe or the exact UTG thickness for every device, so the stack should be understood as a general explanation rather than a specification for every Galaxy Z model. Samsung’s foldable-display overview explains the layers and care guidance.
Why the glass can bend
UTG is not the same as the thick, rigid cover glass on a typical phone. Samsung’s engineering account describes thin glass sheets being coated, cut to precise dimensions, smoothed, polished, and durability-tested before use. The glass sits within a flexible assembly, so the screen can fold without behaving like a conventional glass slab. Samsung says the material and process have been refined over generations; the exact construction varies by model.

Panel design has also changed over time. Samsung’s 2022 account of the Fold4 and Flip4 generation described a shift from a cluster-type to a scatter-type subpixel arrangement, intended to improve grid-pattern visibility and text readability. That is a generation-specific example, not a description of every current model. Samsung’s engineering interview provides that historical detail.
What the hinge changes about daily use
The hinge lets the phone move between closed, fully open, and partially open positions. Samsung says its FlexHinge supports folding and different postures; a partly open device can, for example, stand for hands-free photos or video. The hinge design is not identical across generations: Samsung’s original Z Flip description covered a Hideaway Hinge with a dual-CAM mechanism and nylon-fiber sweepers, but that launch-era mechanism should not be assumed to describe current Galaxy Z hinges. Samsung’s guide to Galaxy Z foldables describes the form factors, while its original Z Flip launch account documents that earlier hinge design.
Fold and Flip serve different priorities
A Fold opens from a phone-like cover screen into a larger main display suited to more workspace and multitasking. A Flip prioritizes a compact folded form, with its outer screen available for quick interactions. The following published diagonals are Samsung’s 2025 examples; diagonal measurements do not establish how much of each display a particular app can use.

What you may notice on the inner screen—and how to care for it
A visible crease and a delicate surface
A fine bend or crease can be visible along the center fold, depending on the viewing angle. Samsung also warns that a heavy external impact can cause colored spots or lines. The inner protective film is attached and can be replaced through service; do not peel it off or add an ordinary aftermarket film unless Samsung gives model-specific guidance. For replacement, consult current Samsung service information for your market. Samsung’s foldable-device precautions cover the film and screen risks.
Avoid concentrated pressure and particles
- Do not press hard on the inner display, particularly near the fold when the phone is not fully open.
- Keep sharp objects away from the inner screen. Samsung warns that sharp or concentrated pressure can damage it.
- Keep sand and small particles away from both the screen and hinge. They can scratch or dent the display and may affect hinge operation.
- Avoid storing the device in very hot or cold conditions, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
Water and dust ratings have limits
For covered models, Samsung describes IP48 as lab-tested protection against certain particles larger than 1 mm and submersion in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. That does not mean sand-proof or permanently waterproof: Samsung does not advise beach or pool use and says water resistance can diminish through normal wear. Check the rating for the exact model and local market rather than assuming all Galaxy Z devices share it. Samsung’s foldable-screen guide explains the rating language and limits.

Battery capacity, measured in milliamp-hours (mAh), is not a direct measure of the number of hours a phone will last. Screen use, connectivity, apps, calls, settings, and other conditions affect runtime. Samsung’s 2025 capacities and video-playback estimates are useful model-specific reference points, but its “up to” figures are manufacturer claims under stated test conditions, not guaranteed mixed-use results.

| Galaxy Z Flip7 | 4,300 mAh | Not stated on the cited Samsung specification | Up to 31 hours |

Capacities are Samsung’s typical figures for the 2025 models; the rated minimum is separately listed for Fold7. The video figures are Samsung product-page estimates for Fold7 and Flip7, not measurements of ordinary mixed use. Samsung says Fold7 battery life varies with network environment, features and apps, call and message frequency, charge count, and other factors. Fold7 product information, Flip7 product information, and Samsung’s 2025 model announcement provide the cited figures.
Charging and battery design
Samsung lists wired Super Fast charging, Fast Wireless Charging 2.0, and Wireless PowerShare for Fold7 and Flip7. Its support guidance gives compatible charger and USB-C cable examples; check the exact device and local guidance when choosing accessories. Samsung’s charging guide for Fold7, Flip7, and Flip7 FE covers supported options.
Samsung says Flip7’s typical capacity rose by 300 mAh compared with Flip6 while the phone became thinner, attributing the design direction to battery energy density and engineering changes. That capacity comparison does not establish a particular runtime gain for an individual user. Samsung also says Fold7’s UTG is 50% thicker than Fold6’s; this is Samsung’s design claim, not an independent durability comparison. Samsung’s 2025 engineering account describes both points.
