The most practical official way to play Zelda II: The Adventure of Link today is on Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application included with a qualifying Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists the game for Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. You can also play an original NES cartridge on original hardware; Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console copies are legacy purchases that can no longer be bought from those eShops.
The current official option: Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online is the modern-console route Nintendo currently provides for Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Nintendo’s game announcement names the NES title in the Nintendo Switch Online catalog and also identifies it as available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. The game is delivered through Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application rather than as a separate modern remake or a standalone purchase.

This distinction matters: access through the service is tied to an active qualifying membership and Nintendo’s current catalog terms. It is not the same as buying a permanent digital copy that remains playable after a membership ends. Nintendo Support describes active Expansion Pack members as having ongoing access to supported classic-game libraries while their membership remains active.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?
Do not assume that the more expensive Expansion Pack tier is universally required. Nintendo’s announcement lists Zelda II with Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, while the exact catalog and entitlement can vary by country. In practice, sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns a current qualifying membership, open the local Nintendo Entertainment System app listing, and confirm that Zelda II appears in the catalog for your account.

If your country’s store presents the game through the standard Nintendo Switch Online NES library, the base membership is the relevant access plan. If the local listing requires another tier, Nintendo’s store and support pages for your country are the authority. Membership prices, plan names, renewal terms and game catalogs are not necessarily identical worldwide.
How to play Zelda II on a Nintendo Switch
The setup is straightforward, but the membership and the app are separate parts of the process. Use the Switch user linked to the active qualifying membership.
- Open Nintendo eShop. Choose the user profile whose Nintendo Account has the Nintendo Switch Online membership you intend to use.
- Find the Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application. Search the eShop for the Nintendo Entertainment System service or open the Nintendo Switch Online section and select the NES application offered for your membership.
- Download the application. Nintendo’s setup instructions direct members to download the relevant classic-game library from the eShop. The application itself is the launcher for the NES catalog; Zelda II is selected inside it.
- Start the application from the Switch HOME Menu. Use the same Nintendo Account that has the qualifying membership. If several profiles use the console, selecting a profile without the entitlement can make the catalog appear unavailable.
- Choose Zelda II: The Adventure of Link from the NES catalog. Select the game’s tile and launch it. Nintendo can change menu wording or the arrangement of the catalog with system and application updates, so the visible labels may differ slightly from these descriptions.
What happens after you download the app?
Downloading the NES application does not convert Zelda II into a separately owned purchase. The application checks the Nintendo Account’s membership entitlement when you use the service. If the membership expires, access to supported subscription games can end until a qualifying membership is active again. Nintendo’s current support terms should be checked if you are planning to cancel, change tiers or move the account to another region.
Regional availability and account checks
Nintendo’s catalog presentation, membership terms and pricing can differ by country. A game listed in one region’s announcement may be displayed differently in another region’s eShop, and the available membership tier can vary. Before paying for a plan, open your country’s Nintendo Switch Online page and verify three items:

- The membership tier: confirm which plan grants access to the Nintendo Entertainment System library in your region.
- The catalog listing: search for Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in the local NES application or Nintendo Switch Online catalog.
- The account used on the console: make sure the eShop user is linked to the Nintendo Account that holds the membership.
These checks avoid the most common misunderstanding: seeing the game mentioned in a general Nintendo announcement and assuming every account, country and membership tier has identical access at the same time.
Alternative route: an original NES and cartridge
Zelda II was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. If you own an original NES console and a working cartridge, that remains a separate, hardware-based way to play the original release. It does not depend on Nintendo Switch Online, a modern eShop account or a subscription catalog.
This route is best understood as legacy ownership and preservation. The practical requirements are the console, a compatible cartridge and a display setup that can accept the console’s output. Cartridge condition, console reliability and resale prices vary substantially, so there is no single current cost or availability figure to apply. Nintendo has not established a fixed market price for used hardware or cartridges.
An original NES also preserves the experience of using period hardware, but it requires maintaining that hardware. If the console or cartridge is not already in your collection, you must evaluate condition and compatibility yourself; those factors are separate from Nintendo’s current Switch service.

Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console versions
Nintendo’s game information records earlier Virtual Console releases for Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Those versions should not be treated as current storefront options. Nintendo ended new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023.
People who bought the game before the shutdown can still redownload previously purchased software for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo’s support guidance. Redownloading is therefore an ownership-based legacy route: it helps an existing purchaser recover a copy, but it does not provide a way for a new customer to buy Zelda II from those eShops today.
If you already own the title on one of those systems, keep the relevant Nintendo Account and console access available and use Nintendo’s current redownload instructions. Do not erase a system or transfer an account solely on the assumption that a fresh purchase will be possible later.

Choose Switch when convenience is the priority
The Switch route avoids sourcing aging hardware and places the NES game in a current console’s software library. It is the clearest choice for someone who does not already own an NES or a Virtual Console copy. The trade-off is that play depends on the membership remaining active and on Nintendo continuing to list the game for your region.

Choose original hardware when preservation is the priority
An NES and cartridge make sense when you already own them or specifically want to preserve the original hardware experience. This route is independent of subscription catalog changes, but it carries the maintenance and availability issues that come with older equipment.
Use Virtual Console only if you already bought it
Wii U and Nintendo 3DS owners who purchased Zelda II can continue using the redownload path described by Nintendo. A new buyer should not plan around those stores, because the purchase function was discontinued in 2023.

The game does not appear in the catalog
- Confirm that you opened the Nintendo Entertainment System application associated with Nintendo Switch Online, not a different classic-game application.
- Check that the active membership belongs to the Nintendo Account selected when launching the application.
- Search the local Nintendo catalog directly. Regional catalogs can differ, and Nintendo may change catalog presentation.
- Review the current Nintendo support page for your country if the title is still absent after the account and region checks.
The app opens but asks for a membership
The application is recognizing that the selected profile does not currently have the required entitlement. Switch to the profile linked to the active membership, or renew the qualifying plan through Nintendo’s local account and eShop pages. Downloading the application alone does not grant subscription access.
You had access before, but it stopped
Check whether the membership expired, was canceled or changed to a tier that does not include the relevant library in your region. Because this is catalog access rather than a permanent standalone purchase, a lapsed entitlement can remove access until the qualifying membership is active again.

You own a Wii U or 3DS copy but cannot buy another one
That is expected after the March 27, 2023 eShop purchase shutdown. Use Nintendo’s redownload process for software bought previously. If the title was never purchased on that Nintendo Account, the legacy eShop is not a current purchase route.
What to verify before subscribing
- Open the Nintendo website or eShop for your country rather than relying on a different region’s catalog page.
- Read the current membership description and identify the plan that includes the NES library.
- Locate Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in the catalog before completing payment.
- Confirm which Nintendo Account and console user will launch the application.
- Decide whether you want subscription access or independent ownership through existing NES hardware or a previously purchased Virtual Console copy.
Nintendo can revise membership terms, catalog lineups and regional availability. Checking these details immediately before subscribing prevents you from treating an older announcement or a legacy storefront listing as a promise of permanent access.
Bottom line for modern-console players
For a player without older Nintendo hardware, install the Nintendo Entertainment System application on Switch and use the Nintendo Account with a current qualifying Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists Zelda II for Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, but your country’s catalog determines the exact entitlement. An original NES cartridge remains a separate preservation route, while Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions are available only to people who purchased them before new eShop sales ended.
