How to Play Your Xbox Games on a PC, Phone, or Tablet

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You have three ways to play Xbox games away from the console: install a supported Windows PC version, stream a game from Xbox Cloud Gaming, or stream games installed on your own Xbox with Remote Play. The right choice depends on whether you own a participating digital title, have an active cloud-eligible plan or game, and whether your internet connection can handle streaming.

Use native installation for the best local performance and offline potential. Use Cloud Gaming when you want to play on a device without installing the console version. Use Remote Play when the game is installed on your Xbox and you want to access that console from another screen.

Choose the route that matches your game and device

Xbox play across devices is not one universal feature. Each route has different ownership, hardware and network requirements.

Route What you need Where the game runs Internet dependence Best for
Windows PC installation A supported PC version, the Xbox PC app and a Microsoft account; Xbox Play Anywhere titles must be participating digital purchases. Locally on the Windows PC. Usually needed for downloading, sign-in and online features; local play depends on the individual game. Higher image quality, lower latency and play that uses your PC’s hardware.
Xbox Cloud Gaming A supported device, compatible controller for most games, a qualifying cloud-playing entitlement and a reliable connection. On Xbox’s servers, streamed to your screen. Required throughout the session. Playing without installing a console game, including on phones, tablets and lower-powered PCs.
Xbox Remote Play An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with remote features enabled, the game installed on that console, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile and a compatible device. On your own Xbox, streamed to the remote device. Required between the console and remote device. Accessing your personal console library, including installed titles and eligible Game Pass games.

Catalogs, supported regions, plans and device lists change. A game being available on Xbox does not automatically mean that it has a Windows version, is in the cloud catalog or supports Remote Play.

Play locally on a Windows PC

There are two related cases: games that have a Windows PC version and games covered by Xbox Play Anywhere. The Xbox PC app can install supported PC games, while Play Anywhere links one participating digital purchase across Xbox and Windows.

What Xbox Play Anywhere includes

For a participating digital game bought through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, one purchase works on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and supported Windows 11 handhelds at no additional cost. The program carries shared saves, add-ons and achievements between those platforms, so progress can follow you from the console to the PC.

That benefit applies only to titles marked as Xbox Play Anywhere and to digital purchases. A physical disc does not become a Windows license, and a game without a Play Anywhere designation may require a separate PC purchase even when a PC edition exists.

Windows requirements

Requirement Xbox’s stated baseline Important qualification
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher Individual games can require a newer build or additional components.
Xbox PC app storage 150 MB This is the app requirement, not the space needed for games.
Display 720p or higher Game resolution and frame rate depend on the title and your hardware.
Hardware Game-specific Check the install page for CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirements for each game.

Windows in S mode may need to be switched out of S mode before the Xbox PC app can be installed. Game downloads can require tens or hundreds of gigabytes even though the app itself needs only 150 MB, so check free storage before starting.

Install a supported game

  1. Update Windows. Open Settings > Windows Update and install updates until the PC is on version 22H2 or later.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app for PC. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or holds the relevant subscription.
  3. Find the title. Search the Xbox PC catalog and open the game’s product page. Look for a PC version and, where relevant, the Xbox Play Anywhere designation.
  4. Check requirements and storage. Review the game’s listed hardware requirements and the required download size. Move the install location if your system drive is low on space.
  5. Select Install. Keep the app open while the game downloads. Large games can take substantial time even on a fast connection.
  6. Launch and allow account synchronization. Start the game from the Xbox app or Windows. If it is a Play Anywhere title, allow cloud saves to finish syncing before switching devices.

If the game does not appear on PC

  • Confirm that you are signed in to the account that made the digital purchase.
  • Check whether the game actually has a Windows edition; a console-only title will not appear as an installable PC game.
  • For Play Anywhere, verify that the digital purchase is a participating title. The label is title-specific, not a guarantee for every game in a series.
  • Check your Windows version and leave S mode if it blocks the Xbox PC app.
  • Look for separate PC system requirements. A compatible license does not mean that every PC can run the game.

Stream games with Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming runs the game on Xbox hardware and sends the video and audio to your browser, app or supported screen. Xbox describes the service as a way to play hundreds of console games on devices you already have. You do not download the console game to the phone, tablet or ordinary PC.

What you can play

The cloud catalog includes most cloud-playable titles in the relevant Game Pass catalog and selected free-to-play games. Xbox also supports streaming select cloud-playable games that you own or buy outside Game Pass. Availability depends on the title, your region, the plan or entitlement attached to your account and the device you use; the catalog can change.

Cloud streaming is therefore different from ownership. A console purchase does not automatically make every game streamable, and a Game Pass listing does not promise that every platform or region will have the same cloud option.

Cloud Gaming requirements

Item Documented guidance Why it matters
Connection speed At least 10 Mbps download; Xbox recommends 20 Mbps for PCs and tablets. Speed alone is not enough. Congestion, routing and distance to the service affect responsiveness.
Wi-Fi 5 GHz Wi-Fi is recommended. It can reduce interference and congestion compared with a crowded 2.4 GHz network, if your device is close enough to the router.
Controller A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB is required for most games. Selected games provide touch controls, but touch support is title-specific.
Display and device Use a supported Windows PC, Apple or Android phone or tablet, supported TV, Amazon Fire TV, selected Meta Quest headset or compatible browser. Exact models and regions are maintained in Xbox’s current support information.

Xbox does not publish one universal latency or frame-rate figure for all cloud sessions. Performance varies with connection, location and device. Streamed games can also have limited video resolution, audio-output options and cloud-save-only functionality compared with a local installation.

Start a cloud session in a browser

  1. Connect your controller. Pair a Bluetooth controller in the device’s Bluetooth settings, or connect one by USB. If the game supports touch controls, you can use those instead.
  2. Open the cloud service. In a supported browser, go to xbox.com/play and sign in with the Microsoft account containing your eligible plan or owned cloud-playable game.
  3. Choose a title marked for cloud play. Search or browse the catalog. If a game is not shown as cloud-playable for your account and region, it cannot be started through the service at that moment.
  4. Launch and wait for the stream. The game starts on remote Xbox hardware. Keep the browser tab active and avoid switching the device to a power-saving mode.
  5. Save normally. Use the game’s usual save system. Cloud saves let you continue on supported Xbox devices, but title, plan, region and platform restrictions still apply.

Use a phone or tablet

Xbox documents cloud gaming on iOS and iPadOS 14.4 or later and Android 12 or later on the cited mobile guidance. These are route-specific baselines, not a guarantee for every handset or tablet. Before troubleshooting, check the live supported-device and region list because browser support and compatibility can change.

  • PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
  1. Update the phone or tablet to a supported operating-system version.
  2. Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB, unless the selected game offers touch controls.
  3. Open a supported browser or the Xbox app where cloud gaming is available.
  4. Sign in, select a cloud-playable game and keep the device on a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection when possible.
  5. Use a stand or controller mount if you need both hands free for a conventional controller; verify that any accessory fits your particular phone or tablet.

Use Xbox Remote Play from another screen

Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Unlike Cloud Gaming, it does not use a shared catalog of server-hosted games: the console is the host, and the game must be installed there. It can reach a PC, phone, tablet, compatible TV or VR headset through supported browser and device combinations.

Remote Play prerequisites

  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S connected to the internet.
  • Remote features enabled on the console.
  • A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile.
  • A compatible PC, phone, tablet, TV or headset and a supported browser or app.
  • The game installed on the console. Remote Play can include installed titles from the Xbox Game Pass library when your account is entitled to play them.
  • A controller suitable for the remote device and game.

Xbox’s Remote Play guidance specifies that an Xbox One must be turned on or set to Instant-On for remote access. High-speed internet is required, and your internet service provider may apply data or usage charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable Remote Play on the console

  1. Open the console settings. From the Xbox dashboard, go to Profile & system > Settings.
  2. Open device options. Choose Devices & connections > Remote features.
  3. Turn on remote features. Enable the remote-play option and run the console’s network test if prompted.
  4. Set the power mode for access. On Xbox One, use Instant-On or leave the console powered on so it can accept a remote connection.
  5. Install the game. Confirm the title is fully installed and updated on the console before leaving it.

Connect from a PC, phone or tablet

  1. On the remote device, open the supported Xbox app or browser experience and sign in to the same Microsoft account used on the console.
  2. Select the console from the remote-play option. If it is not listed, confirm that remote features are enabled and that the console is online or in the required power mode.
  3. Pair or plug in the controller.
  4. Start the installed game. The console renders the game and streams it to the remote display.
  5. When finished, exit the game and disconnect the session so the console can return to its normal power state.

Controller choices and touch input

For Cloud Gaming, Xbox requires a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB for most titles. An Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward reference option because Xbox documents controller support for cloud play and mobile use. Other compatible controllers can work when they meet the device’s Bluetooth or USB requirements.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

Touch controls are available only in selected cloud games. A game that supports touch input may show an on-screen control layout; do not assume that every console title can be played comfortably without a physical controller. Remote Play and native PC games generally provide the most predictable experience with a controller, although some PC titles also support keyboard and mouse.

Make streaming more responsive

Streaming quality is determined by the complete path between your device, home network and Xbox service or console. Meeting the minimum download speed does not guarantee low latency.

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the router, or connect the PC or console by Ethernet where practical.
  • Pause large downloads, video uploads and other high-bandwidth activity during play.
  • Close background apps that compete for bandwidth or battery power.
  • Keep the device plugged in for long sessions; power-saving modes can reduce wireless performance or interrupt the stream.
  • If the image becomes blocky or controls feel delayed, test another network before changing game settings. A different connection can reveal whether the problem is local Wi-Fi or the service path.
  • Expect differences between local and streamed play. Cloud and Remote Play can have reduced resolution, audio-output limitations or cloud-save-only behavior even when the game itself is fully supported.

How saves and purchases carry between devices

Play Anywhere saves

Participating digital Play Anywhere games synchronize progress, add-ons and achievements between Xbox, Windows PC and supported Windows 11 handhelds. Buy the game once through the Xbox or Windows Store, then install the PC version with the account that owns it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud and Remote Play saves

Cloud Gaming and Remote Play use Xbox account saves when the title supports the relevant feature. Cloud Gaming may expose only the cloud-save behavior supported by that stream, while Remote Play behaves like using the game on your own console. Availability still depends on the title, plan, region and platform.

If progress appears missing, stop playing on both devices, reconnect the original device to the internet and allow its save to synchronize. Then launch the destination device with the same Microsoft account. Starting a game under a different account can create a separate save path.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The Xbox PC app will not install

  • Confirm Windows is version 22H2 or newer.
  • Check whether Windows S mode is preventing the installation; leaving S mode may be required.
  • Install pending Windows updates, restart and try again.
  • Make sure the system drive has room for the app and the game files.

A game is missing from the PC library

  • Verify the Microsoft account and purchase history.
  • Look for a Windows edition or Play Anywhere designation; a console-only game cannot be installed natively on PC.
  • Check regional availability and whether the title is included through the account’s current entitlement.

Cloud Gaming will not start

  • Confirm that the title is currently cloud-playable for your region and account.
  • Check the controller connection, then try USB if Bluetooth input is unreliable.
  • Use a supported browser or app and update the device’s operating system.
  • Test the connection against the documented baseline: 10 Mbps minimum, with 20 Mbps recommended for PCs and tablets.

Remote Play cannot find the console

  • On the Xbox, revisit Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features and confirm that remote features remain enabled.
  • Check that the console is online and, for Xbox One, powered on or in Instant-On mode.
  • Sign in with the same Microsoft account on the console and remote device.
  • Restart the console and router, then try the connection again.

The picture stutters or input arrives late

  • Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, reduce distance from the router and stop competing network traffic.
  • Try the same session on another network to separate home-network issues from service or location effects.
  • For a game you play frequently, compare Remote Play and Cloud Gaming with a native PC installation if a Windows version exists. Local installation removes the streaming link from the control path.

Which method should you use?

Your situation Recommended route Reason
You own a participating digital Play Anywhere game and have a capable Windows PC. Install the Windows version. One purchase carries saves, add-ons and achievements, while the PC handles rendering locally.
You have a phone or tablet and do not want to install a large game. Cloud Gaming. The game runs remotely and streams to the mobile device, subject to catalog, plan, region and controller support.
You own an Xbox with the game already installed. Remote Play. Your console supplies the game and your account’s installed library.
Your internet connection is inconsistent but your PC meets the game’s requirements. Native PC installation. Local rendering avoids the latency and image-quality variation of streaming.
You want to try a supported game on several screens without buying a PC copy. Cloud Gaming, if the title and account are eligible. Cloud access can cover supported browsers, phones, tablets and other listed devices, but the catalog is not universal.
