Games that require an internet connection or an external launcher may still refuse to start.
Prepare Steam and your games while online
Before disconnecting, sign in and make sure Steam has saved the credentials it needs to start offline. Then update and launch every game you plan to play. Valve’s Offline Mode instructions note that most games need an initial connected launch; this gives the game a chance to complete first-run setup or other required updates.

- Connect to the internet and open Steam. On the sign-in window, check Remember me.
- Allow Steam and each intended game to finish updating.
- Launch each game once while connected. Complete any installation, first-run setup, or updates, then exit the game.
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Security. Confirm that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
Switch Steam to Offline Mode
From Steam’s main window, select Steam > Go Offline, then confirm the change if prompted. Steam will restart in Offline Mode. Features that depend on a connection to Steam’s online services will be unavailable while this mode is active.

Offline Mode does not override a game’s own connection requirements. A game that requires an active internet connection or depends on an external launcher may not start offline. Check the game’s requirements and any separate launcher’s requirements before relying on offline access.

A Steam library status of “100% – Ready” only indicates that Steam considers the download ready; it does not guarantee that the game supports offline play. If a game reports that it cannot start in Offline Mode, Valve says the Steam client or game files may need updating. Reconnect, install available updates, and try launching the game online before switching back to Offline Mode.
Protect saves while playing offline
Steam Cloud does not synchronize while you are playing in Offline Mode. Valve’s Steam Cloud guidance warns that unresolved synchronization can create a conflict between local and cloud files, potentially putting progress or data at risk.

When you reconnect, read any Steam Cloud conflict prompt before choosing which files to keep. Do not assume that the local save or the cloud copy is automatically the one you want; compare the available options and select the version that preserves your progress.

If Steam asks you to log in while offline
Valve says there is no way to bypass an offline login request without going online. Reconnect if possible, sign in with Remember me checked, verify that account credentials are allowed to be saved in Steam > Settings > Security, then use Steam > Go Offline before disconnecting again.

When you are finished, close Steam using its normal exit option rather than force-quitting it or shutting down in a way that could interrupt the saving of Offline Mode information. When you have internet access again, reconnect Steam and let Cloud synchronization complete, handling any conflict prompt carefully.
