How to Buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana: A Beginner’s Guide to Exchanges and Wallets

A beginner’s guide to buying Bitcoin, Ether and Solana, reviewing fees, choosing custody and transferring crypto to a compatible wallet.

You can buy Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) through a crypto exchange or, where supported, through a wallet’s linked purchase service. The basic steps are to verify the service supports the asset in your location, complete any account and payment checks, review the total price and fees, and confirm. Before transferring crypto, match the exact network to the receiving wallet. Keeping crypto with a service is convenient; moving it to a self-custody wallet gives you control of the keys but makes you responsible for protecting them.

How to buy BTC, ETH or SOL

Most purchase services follow a similar sequence, although available assets, payment methods, verification steps and minimums vary by provider and location. Coinbase’s help page documents one example of the exchange-account flow; it is not a recommendation, and another service may use different labels or requirements. Check the service’s current terms and live checkout before paying.

  1. Check availability. Confirm that the service offers BTC, ETH or SOL for customers in your location, and that the specific account or wallet mode you plan to use supports it.
  2. Create or access an account. Complete identity verification if the service requires it, and set up a payment method accepted for your location and account.
  3. Select the asset and amount. Check that you are choosing the intended asset—Ether (ETH), for example, rather than a similarly named token—and review any minimum purchase shown. Coinbase says minimums can vary by asset or payment method.
  4. Review the order preview. Check the quoted exchange rate, amount you will receive, payment method, provider fees and any other displayed charges. Do not assume a displayed estimate is fixed until the order is confirmed.
  5. Confirm only if the details are right. Save the transaction record and check the account for the completed purchase.

Coinbase’s documented purchase flow is an example of those steps: Coinbase: How do I buy cryptocurrency?. Availability and fees can change; use the service’s live order preview rather than an old fee example.

Exchange or wallet: who controls the keys?

A crypto wallet does not hold coins like a physical wallet holds cash. It manages the private keys or passcodes used to access and control crypto assets. The key question is who controls those credentials: the service, or you.

Buying and holding with an exchange or custodian

With third-party custody, the provider manages the private keys. Keeping crypto in an exchange account can make buying and account access simpler, but you depend on the provider’s security, operations and recovery processes. If it is compromised, fails or becomes insolvent, access to your assets may be at risk. Do not assume the assets have the same protections as insured bank deposits.

Before choosing a custodian, investigate its background and regulatory status, which assets it supports, how customer assets are stored and used, its security and privacy practices, what happens if it fails, and its account, transaction and transfer fees. The SEC also advises asking about annual asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup and closure fees. Its guidance is educational, not a guarantee about any particular provider: SEC: Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors.

Self-custody with a software or hardware wallet

With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for keeping them secure and recoverable. A software wallet is commonly available through a phone, desktop or web app. A hardware wallet is a physical device used for key management; it is an optional way to use cold storage, not a requirement for buying crypto. The device can be lost, damaged or stolen, and cold storage is not invulnerable.

Compare any wallet’s supported assets and networks, recovery process, security documentation, usability and cost. Verify that the exact device and its current firmware support the BTC, ETH and SOL networks you intend to use. A wallet’s name or general claim of multi-asset support is not enough to establish compatibility.

Hot and cold storage

Hot wallets connect to the internet through web, desktop or mobile software. They are convenient for transactions but more exposed to online attacks. Cold wallets are typically kept offline and are generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but require more care and are vulnerable to physical loss, damage or theft. The SEC notes that physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money, while hot wallets may initially be free; actual products and costs vary.

How to transfer crypto without a network mismatch

A transfer involves both an asset and a blockchain network. A Bitcoin address and an Ethereum address are not interchangeable, and a wallet may support one network but not another. Before sending, make sure the receiving wallet supports the exact asset on the exact network selected by the sending service. A mismatch can make funds inaccessible.

  1. Open the receiving wallet’s deposit or receive screen. Select the asset and, if prompted, its network.
  2. Check the address and network together. Copy the address using the wallet’s receive function and verify that the sending service offers the same network. Do not rely on the asset ticker alone.
  3. Review the transfer preview. Check the destination, amount, network fee and any provider withdrawal charge before approving.
  4. Send cautiously. If you are unfamiliar with the process, consider whether the service permits a small test transfer and whether the additional fee is acceptable. Confirm the details again before authorizing any transfer.

Wallet features differ even within one provider. Coinbase’s documentation, for example, says supported assets and networks depend on wallet mode: some modes support EVM-compatible networks, Bitcoin and Solana, while its smart wallet is EVM-only. Its support page is a provider-specific example, not a general list of compatible wallets: Coinbase Wallet: Supported assets and networks.

Buying through a wallet’s linked service

Some wallets offer purchases through a linked exchange account or a third-party on-ramp. The wallet may show a purchase flow in its app, but a third party can process the payment. Coinbase Wallet’s documented example asks the user to select an asset and network, enter an amount, choose a payment method, then review and confirm. Its available options and fee estimates vary by region. Outgoing blockchain transactions incur network fees, and third-party fee estimates can change, so rely on the live checkout preview rather than a static example: Coinbase Wallet: Adding crypto to my Wallet.

  • Custody and recovery: who controls the keys, what account recovery entails, and what happens if the provider fails or you lose self-custody credentials.
  • Security and privacy: protections for online accounts, privacy practices, and how customer assets are stored or used.
  • Other fees: ask custodians about transaction, transfer, annual asset-based, setup and closure fees where applicable.

Fees, asset support, payment options and regulations can change and may differ by country. A current provider preview and current official support documentation are more useful than a generic fee table.

Protect your account and recovery information

  • Use a unique, strong password and enable multifactor authentication on online accounts.
  • Never share a private key or seed phrase, including with someone claiming to be customer support. Store recovery information securely and offline.
  • Be alert to phishing messages, imitation support accounts and pressure to buy or transfer immediately. Navigate to a service using its official app or website rather than a link in an unexpected message.
  • Understand the consequence of losing a self-custody key or seed phrase: you may permanently lose access. A device or recovery copy can also be stolen or damaged.

The SEC’s custody bulletin says, “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” It also explains that crypto in wallets or exchanges does not receive the same protections as bank deposits and securities accounts. Its broader investor alert describes crypto investments as volatile and warns of exchange shutdowns and security failures: SEC Investor.gov: Investor Alert on Bitcoin and other virtual currency-related investments.

Direct ownership versus a Bitcoin or Ether ETP

A spot Bitcoin or Ether exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide price exposure without requiring you to transact on a crypto platform or manage wallet keys directly. It is not the same as owning crypto that you can withdraw to a personal wallet, and it still carries the price volatility of its underlying asset as well as product-specific structure and risks. The SEC investor bulletin reviewed here covers Bitcoin and Ether ETPs; it does not establish equivalent guidance for Solana products: SEC: Exchange-Traded Products Providing Exposure to Bitcoin and Ether.

What to know about risk and taxes

Bitcoin, Ether and Solana prices can move sharply, and buying or holding crypto is not the same as holding an insured bank deposit or a securities account with the same protections. Do not invest money you cannot afford to lose, and consider the risks of both the asset and the service holding it.

Tax treatment and reporting duties depend on jurisdiction and personal circumstances; there is no universal answer that applies to every buyer. Check current guidance from the tax authority where you live or consult a qualified tax professional before making decisions based on tax treatment.
