How to clean Invisalign aligners

Eating, drinking and storing aligners
- Take aligners out before eating or drinking anything other than tap water. Invisalign’s patient instructions allow cool or tepid water while wearing them. AAO food and drink FAQ
- Put removed aligners in their case rather than leaving them loose while you eat or travel.
- After a meal or drink, brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners, as the AAO advises.
Keeping the case with you makes it easier to store the trays safely when you take them out.
Are Invisalign Cleaning Crystals+ necessary?
No. Cleaning Crystals+ is an optional product method, not a universal requirement. Invisalign describes it as a no-brush soak, while its patient instructions describe brushing and rinsing. There is no direct performance comparison established here to show one method cleans better than the other. Choose the method that fits your provider’s instructions and the product directions.

How to use Cleaning Crystals+
Invisalign’s US accessory-store directions say to add one capful to 100 ml of warm water, fully submerge the aligners, stir for 20 seconds, soak for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly. The page cautions against hot water. Its instruction says: “Soak – Soak aligners or retainers in the mixture for 15 minutes.” This timing and method apply to Cleaning Crystals+, not to every aligner cleaner. What the product’s bacteria claim means
Align Technology reports a 99.99% reduction in five named odor-causing bacterial strains after a 15-minute exposure test, with data on file as of December 12, 2023. This is a manufacturer-reported product test, not an independent clinical outcome or proof that the product eliminates all bacteria.

Check the product directions and ask your orthodontist whether it is suitable for your treatment; the listing alone does not establish that it is a better cleaner than brushing or soaking.
