You need a media app that supports Android Auto and can also read your local files. Install or open that app, confirm its local-library capability in its current documentation, sign in on the phone, and then select it from the car display’s app launcher.
The connection method matters. Wired Android Auto requires Android 9.0 (Pie) or later, an active data plan, a compatible vehicle and a suitable USB data cable. Google lists Android 11.0 phones among those compatible with wireless projection, but the phone and vehicle must both support wireless Android Auto. Set everything up while parked.

What must be compatible
There are two separate checks, and both are necessary:
- Platform compatibility: the media app must be approved for Android Auto and appear as an available Android Auto app.
- Local-library capability: that same app must be able to browse and play the music files stored on your phone.
Google’s Android Auto guidance confirms that compatible media apps can play music through the vehicle’s speakers. It does not establish that every compatible app can read local files. Treat those capabilities as independent when choosing an app.

Phone, car and connection requirements

Vehicle support can vary by model, trim and market. Check the car manufacturer’s Android Auto compatibility information before treating an app or cable as the problem. A phone that works with Android Auto in one vehicle is not proof that every vehicle supports the same connection mode.
Choose a player that can do both jobs
Do not choose an app solely because it plays files locally, and do not choose one solely because its Play Store page mentions Android Auto. You need evidence for both functions in the app’s current Play Store listing or developer documentation.
Check Android Auto availability
Google’s compatible-app listing is available through Google Play when you are signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled. Use that listing as the first check. If the app is not listed as Android Auto-compatible, it should not be expected to appear in the car’s app launcher.
Check local-file browsing
Look for explicit documentation that the app can browse music already stored on the phone. Confirm whether it uses folders, an indexed library, playlists or another organization method. “Music app” or “offline mode” by itself does not prove that it can import your existing collection.
Check formats and metadata
Audio-format support, embedded tags, album artwork and folder behavior are app-specific. Verify the formats in your collection against the app’s current documentation. The Android Auto compatibility listing does not establish which formats the app accepts or how it displays artist, album and track information.

Check account, subscription and network conditions
Some media apps may require an account, subscription or premium tier. Google notes that an app can require a subscription or premium account even when it is Android Auto-compatible. Confirm whether local playback works without an internet connection and whether any sign-in is required each time. Do not assume that a local file is available offline merely because the app can play streaming media.
Check the controls you actually need
At minimum, confirm that the app exposes its playback interface in Android Auto. If you need voice control, verify that the app documents support for voice requests. Google’s examples of voice commands name streaming services; they do not prove that an unspecified local-file player accepts the same commands.

No particular player is identified by the official guidance as meeting every one of these conditions. Verify the current app documentation instead of relying on an old recommendation or assuming Google endorses a specific local player.
Prepare the phone before Android Auto starts
- Install or open the candidate media app on the phone.
- Use the app’s own instructions to make sure it can see the local collection. If the app offers a choice between local files and online services, select the local-library view.
- Sign in to the app on the phone before starting Android Auto. This is an explicit Android Auto setup requirement for media apps that use an account.
- Confirm that the phone itself can play one of the tracks. This separates a library or format issue from an Android Auto connection issue.
- Put the vehicle in Park before beginning setup or handling the phone.
Keep the phone’s normal player and the Android Auto-compatible player conceptually separate. An ordinary phone music player is not automatically made available on the car display just because it can play the same files.
Set up wired Android Auto
Wired Android Auto is the straightforward option when both the phone and car support it. It uses the vehicle’s USB connection and requires Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan and a compatible car.

- Park the car and turn on the infotainment system.
- Check that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings.
- Connect the phone directly to the car with a high-quality USB data cable.
- Follow the instructions shown on the phone and car display. Complete any Android Auto setup prompts before opening the media app.
- Open the car’s app launcher and select the media app you prepared on the phone.
- Use the app’s Android Auto interface to choose the local library, folder, album or playlist that contains your music.
If the app does not appear, stop and recheck Android Auto compatibility and the phone sign-in. A USB connection cannot make an incompatible app appear.

Wireless projection removes the USB cable from normal use, but it has stricter compatibility requirements. Google lists Android 11.0 phones among those compatible with wireless projection, and both the phone and car must support wireless Android Auto.
- Park the vehicle and switch on its infotainment system.
- For the first wireless setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth.
- Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled while pairing and completing setup.
- Accept the Android Auto prompts on the phone and car display.
- When the Android Auto home screen appears, open the app launcher.
- Select the media app that you signed into and prepared on the phone.
- Choose the local collection from the app’s Android Auto interface.
After the initial pairing, the exact reconnection behavior depends on the vehicle and phone. If wireless Android Auto never starts, confirm wireless compatibility first; do not begin by replacing a USB cable, because a cable is not used for the wireless projection itself.
Open and control your local music on the car screen
Once Android Auto is running, open the app launcher on the vehicle display and choose the compatible media app. Android Auto sends the app’s media playback to the car’s speakers, while the car display provides the supported controls.
The available controls depend on the app. A compatible app may expose play and pause, previous and next track, browsing and queue controls, but the Android Auto listing alone does not guarantee a particular layout. Use the controls presented by that app rather than assuming that a streaming service’s interface or commands will be duplicated.

Voice requests
Google documents voice requests for media, but its examples identify streaming services. Do not assume that a local-file app responds to a voice request simply because it appears in Android Auto. Check the app’s current documentation, and use the car display’s controls when voice support is not confirmed.
Audio comes from the car speakers
Android Auto is the projection and control layer. The phone’s media app supplies the content, and the vehicle’s audio system supplies the sound. This is why an app must support Android Auto rather than merely playing music on the phone screen.

Android Auto does not start at all
- Confirm that the vehicle and phone meet the wired requirements: Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan and a compatible car.
- Check that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Restart the vehicle’s infotainment receiver, then reconnect the phone.
- Try a different high-quality USB data cable.
- Connect the phone directly to the vehicle instead of through a hub or extension.
These checks address the Android Auto connection itself. They do not establish whether the media app can read your local files.
The phone charges but Android Auto does not connect
Charging alone does not prove that a cable carries the data connection Android Auto needs. Replace the cable with a high-quality data cable and avoid hubs and extensions. Google suggests staying below 3 feet (1 meter) for the cable.

Recheck that the app is currently listed as Android Auto-compatible. Then open it on the phone and sign in before reconnecting. If it still does not appear, the issue is app compatibility or Android Auto availability, not the location of a particular album.

Wireless connection troubleshooting
Wireless setup never completes
- Confirm that both the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto.
- For first-time setup, pair through Bluetooth.
- Leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled during pairing.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model and market.
A wired cable cannot solve a vehicle that lacks wireless Android Auto support. If the car supports wired Android Auto, use the wired procedure as a separate test.
Android Auto connects, but the local library is empty
First, play a local track in the app on the phone. If the app cannot see the collection there, Android Auto is not the root cause. Revisit the app’s current documentation for local-file import, folder browsing, supported formats and metadata requirements. If local playback works on the phone but not in Android Auto, check whether the app’s Android Auto interface exposes the local-library section; Android Auto compatibility does not guarantee that every phone-screen feature is available on the car display.
The app asks for a subscription
Read the app’s current account and plan terms. Google warns that some Android Auto media apps require a subscription or premium account. A subscription prompt is an app policy, not evidence that Android Auto itself requires payment for local music.
Voice control does not work
Use the app’s visible Android Auto controls and verify the developer’s current voice-support documentation. Google’s documented examples for media voice requests do not establish equivalent support for every local-file player.
USB cable guidance for wired playback
For wired Android Auto, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable, suggests one shorter than 3 feet (1 meter), and advises against hubs and extensions. A cable from an independent manufacturer can be suitable when it meets USB-IF standards; Google says its certification can be checked within the past two years.
These recommendations concern a reliable Android Auto data connection. They are not evidence that a particular cable improves audio quality, changes supported formats or makes local playback possible. Wireless Android Auto does not need a USB cable for projection.
How to decide between wired and wireless

Neither connection mode determines whether a media app can play local files. That decision belongs to the app’s Android Auto implementation and its local-library support.
Common assumptions that cause problems
- “Any phone music player should appear.” Android Auto requires compatible apps; an ordinary player is not automatically projected.
- “Android Auto compatibility means local playback.” Compatibility with the platform and access to local files are separate checks.
- “Wireless is just wired without the cable.” Wireless projection has its own phone and vehicle requirements and needs Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services during first-time pairing.
- “A charging cable is enough.” Wired Android Auto needs a data-capable connection; Google recommends a high-quality cable and no hubs or extensions.
- “A voice command shown by Google will work in every app.” Google’s examples use named streaming services, so local-player voice support must be verified independently.
- “A subscription prompt comes from Android Auto.” Some apps impose their own subscription or premium-account requirements.
A reliable order for diagnosing the setup
- Verify the exact phone and vehicle compatibility, including whether you are testing wired or wireless Android Auto.
- Establish that Android Auto itself connects before investigating the music library.
- Confirm that the selected app is currently Android Auto-compatible.
- Sign in to the app on the phone before reconnecting.
- Confirm that the app can play a local file on the phone.
- Check the app’s documentation for local-library browsing, formats and any account or subscription requirement.
- Open the app from the car’s launcher and test its Android Auto controls.
- If the connection is wired and unreliable, replace the cable, stay under 3 feet (1 meter), remove hubs or extensions and restart the infotainment receiver.
- If the connection is wireless, repeat the Bluetooth pairing with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled.
This order prevents a library-format question from being mistaken for a vehicle-compatibility problem, and prevents a bad USB connection from being blamed on the media app.
