Run a portable generator only outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home and every door, window, and vent, with exhaust pointed away from buildings. Keep it dry according to the owner’s manual, connect appliances with individual heavy-duty outdoor-rated cords, and keep household carbon-monoxide (CO) alarms working. Never operate a generator in a garage, basement, shed, porch, carport, or other enclosed or partly enclosed space—even with a door or window open.
Winter adds hazards from snow, rain, ice, darkness, fuel vapors, wet electrical equipment, blocked exhaust, and cold-start problems. The sequence below combines current guidance from the CDC and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) so you can prepare before an outage, set up safely, monitor the equipment, refuel, and shut down without creating a second emergency.

Why winter generator use is especially dangerous
A portable generator burns fuel and produces carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas that can kill without warning. CO can enter a home through open doors, windows, vents, and other openings even when the generator appears to be “outside.” The CPSC says portable generators are associated with about 100 U.S. consumer deaths from non-fire CO poisoning per year, an annual average attributed to its latest report. The release does not state the estimation period or method, so treat the figure as a broad safety warning rather than a prediction for a particular storm.

Cold weather creates additional failure points. Snow can cover an exhaust outlet, precipitation can make electrical components or cords wet, and people often move equipment into a garage or porch to keep it warm. Fuel handling in bulky winter clothing, poor lighting, and icy footing increases fire and injury risk. A safe plan keeps the generator outdoors, dry as specified by its manual, separated from the home, and monitored throughout operation.

Before an outage: build a safe generator plan
Read the exact owner’s manual
Keep the manual with the generator and read the labels before a storm. Find the manufacturer’s instructions for cold-weather starting, precipitation, grounding and electrical connections, rated output, fuel, maintenance, shutdown, and storage. Models differ, and generic advice cannot replace warnings for your specific engine and control panel. CPSC recommends maintaining the unit and following every label and owner-manual instruction.
Prepare carbon-monoxide alarms
Install working CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, as CPSC recommends. Test them monthly. Use battery-operated or battery-backup alarms so a power failure does not disable protection. Know which alarm sound means an emergency and keep fresh batteries available.
Choose a safe operating location
Before the storm, identify an outdoor spot at least 20 feet from the home, windows, doors, and vents, with the exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings. The location should not be under a porch, inside a carport, or beside an opening where fumes can collect. Plan a path for cords that does not cross standing water, doorways where they can be pinched, or walkways where people can trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGather cords and weather protection
Buy individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords long enough to preserve the 20-foot separation. Inspect jackets, plugs, and receptacles before every use. Do not use cords that are cut, frayed, crushed, warm to the touch, or missing grounding features. The reviewed CDC and CPSC guidance does not establish one universal cord gauge, generator-load plan, or household-wiring procedure; follow the generator manual and ask a qualified electrician about any permanent connection or transfer-switch installation.
Plan fuel and access
Store gasoline outdoors in an approved container, never inside the home, basement, or attached garage where vapors can ignite. Keep fuel away from flames, pilot lights, heaters, and electrical equipment. Place the generator where you can reach the controls and fuel cap without standing in a drift, and arrange a flashlight or headlamp for nighttime checks.

Consider a CO shutoff feature
CPSC advises buyers to look for a generator with a CO shutoff feature. This can add protection if dangerous CO levels are detected, but it does not make indoor use safe and does not replace the 20-foot placement rule, exhaust direction, or household alarms.
Where a portable generator may—and may not—run
| Location or condition | Safe action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Open outdoor area, at least 20 feet from openings | Use only when the manual permits current weather conditions; direct exhaust away from buildings. | Provides the separation needed to reduce CO entry. |
| Garage with the door open | Do not use. | An open door or window does not provide enough ventilation. CO can reach lethal levels. |
| Basement, shed, porch, carport, or attached structure | Do not use. | These are enclosed or partly enclosed spaces where exhaust accumulates. |
| Near a window, door, vent, or neighboring building entrance | Move it so every opening is at least 20 feet away; point exhaust away. | Exhaust can be drawn indoors or into another building. |
| Rain or snow reaching the generator | Follow the manual. Wait for precipitation to stop unless the manual specifies an approved noncombustible generator tent and installation. | Water and electricity create shock and equipment hazards. |
| Wet generator, cord, appliance, or plug | Do not operate. Disconnect power only if it can be done safely, then follow the manual. | Wet equipment can shock users, short-circuit, or start a fire. |
“Opening doors or windows will not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO,” CPSC states in its Dec. 12, 2025 winter-storm release. A garage is therefore not a compromise location, even during heavy snow.
When the outage starts: set up in this order
- Check the area first. Look for downed wires, flooding, unstable snow or ice, combustible materials, and blocked paths. Keep children and pets away from the operating zone.
- Move the generator outdoors. Position it at least 20 feet from every window, door, vent, and opening, and from entrances to nearby buildings. Set the exhaust so it points away from all structures.
- Confirm weather protection. Follow the model’s instructions for rain and snow. Do not start a wet unit. If the manual requires precipitation to stop, wait. If it approves a specific NFPA-rated noncombustible generator tent, use only that type and install it exactly as directed; an improvised tarp, umbrella, box, or plastic sheet is not automatically safe.
- Stabilize the footing. Place the generator on a firm, level surface that will not shift as snow melts. Keep it clear of combustible materials and away from places where falling snow or roof ice can strike it.
- Start it according to the manual. Use the specified choke, switches, warm-up time, and starting procedure. Never bypass a safety interlock or alter the exhaust system.
- Connect appliances individually. Plug each appliance into a separate heavy-duty outdoor-rated cord, then connect the cords to the generator as directed. Keep plugs, receptacles, cords, and appliances dry. Do not use damaged or indoor-only cords.
- Keep the load within the model’s rating. Use the wattage and starting-load information in the manual. The official guidance reviewed here does not provide a universal load calculation, so do not guess or assume a generator can power an entire household. Have an electrician install any transfer switch or other permanent connection.
- Keep CO alarms active. Never remove batteries, silence an alarm permanently, or assume a CO shutoff feature replaces indoor alarms.
Managing snow, ice, rain, and exhaust
Prevent exhaust blockage
Check the operating area regularly for drifting snow, leaves, plastic, or other debris that could cover the combustion-air intake or exhaust outlet. The reviewed guidance gives no universal clearance distance for a portable-generator exhaust, so do not invent one; keep the outlet visibly open and follow the manufacturer’s spacing instructions. Turn the unit off and let hot parts cool before removing an obstruction. Wear gloves for snow, but keep hands away from moving or hot components.
Clear household furnace, boiler, water-heater, dryer, and other appliance vents after heavy snowfall. A blocked vent can push combustion gases into the home even when the generator is correctly placed. CDC winter-storm guidance also warns that snow must not block vehicle exhaust pipes; the same principle applies to any fuel-burning equipment.
Keep precipitation off electrical equipment
CDC guidance says the generator should be somewhere rain and snow will not reach it and says not to use a wet generator or appliances. CPSC directs users to follow the particular manufacturer’s inclement-weather instructions, which may require waiting for precipitation to pass or using an NFPA-rated noncombustible generator tent. A household tarp, tent, canopy, or plywood shelter can trap heat, shed water into outlets, or violate required clearances. Unless the manual specifically permits the shelter and describes its installation, do not use it.

What to do if the generator gets wet
Do not touch wet plugs or energized equipment. If you can do so without entering water or contacting damaged wiring, switch off the generator using its normal control, then disconnect loads only as the manual permits. Keep everyone away until the equipment is dry and inspected according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If water has entered the control panel, engine, receptacle, or fuel system, arrange qualified service rather than attempting an improvised restart.

Recognize exposure symptoms
CO poisoning may cause headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. People who are sleeping, very young, older, pregnant, or have certain medical conditions may be especially vulnerable, but anyone can be poisoned.
If a home alarm sounds
- Get everyone, including pets, outside into fresh air immediately.
- Do not search for the source, restart the generator, or re-enter to silence the alarm.
- Call 911 from outside and tell responders that a CO alarm sounded or that poisoning is suspected.
- Seek emergency medical help for anyone with symptoms. Do not return until emergency personnel say it is safe.
Do not treat a silent alarm as proof that the setup is safe. CO levels can change with wind, temperature, snow walls, and door or vent operation. Keep alarms powered and test them monthly, including during an outage.
Using extension cords without creating a second hazard
Choose the right type and length
Use one heavy-duty, outdoor-rated cord per appliance, with enough length to keep the generator at least 20 feet from openings. Outdoor cords are designed for exterior exposure; indoor cords are not a substitute. Follow the cord’s rating and the appliance’s requirements. Do not connect multiple extension cords end to end to reach the house.
Route and inspect cords
- Keep cords away from puddles, melting snow, driveways, hot surfaces, sharp edges, and areas where vehicles or snow blowers can crush them.
- Do not run cords through a window, door, or wall opening where they can be pinched or allow exhaust to enter. Use the length needed to maintain separation and keep openings closed as much as practical.
- Keep plugs and connections elevated and protected from precipitation as the manual permits, without enclosing the generator or trapping heat.
- Replace any cord with damaged insulation, bent blades, loose connections, overheating, or signs of arcing.
The CDC and CPSC material reviewed here does not specify a single wire gauge for every appliance or a universal maximum load. Use the manufacturer’s electrical instructions and consult a qualified electrician for questions about capacity, grounding, or connecting a home’s wiring.

Refueling safely in freezing conditions
- Turn the generator off. Never add fuel while it is running.
- Let it cool. CPSC says to allow the generator to cool before refueling. Hot engine parts can ignite gasoline vapors.
- Move carefully. Use a flashlight, clear ice from your footing, and keep flames, cigarettes, heaters, and sparks away.
- Use the specified fuel. Follow the manual for fuel type, stabilizer, and cold-weather storage. Do not mix fuels or add unapproved products.
- Clean spills immediately and safely. Keep fuel out of snow, drains, and soil. If vapors are strong or a large spill occurs, move away and contact local emergency services for advice.
- Close and store the container outdoors. Gasoline belongs in an approved container outdoors, never in living areas, basements, or attached garages.
After refueling, inspect the cap and fuel line for leaks before restarting. If you smell gasoline, see a leak, or cannot keep the area free of ignition sources, do not start the generator.
Monitoring during a long outage
Use a repeatable inspection cycle
At regular intervals and after every heavy snowfall or wind shift, verify that the generator remains at least 20 feet from openings, the exhaust still points away, snow has not drifted around the outlet, cords are dry and undamaged, and no appliance is overheating. Check the fuel level only after shutdown and cooling. Follow the manual’s maintenance intervals rather than extending them because the unit is running intermittently.
Watch for warning signs
- CO alarm, headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion: evacuate and call 911 from outside.
- Fuel smell or visible leak: shut down if safe, remove ignition sources, and keep people away.
- Hot, discolored, buzzing, or smoking cord or plug: stop using that circuit and disconnect only when safe.
- Engine surging, unusual noise, smoke, or repeated shutdown: turn it off and consult the manual or qualified service.
- Snow or debris at the exhaust: shut down, allow hot parts to cool, and clear it without reaching into moving components.
Keep people clear
Exhaust, mufflers, fuel, and moving parts can burn or injure. Establish a no-play zone around the generator, especially when visibility is poor. Do not allow children to operate controls or retrieve cords. Keep pets away from hot surfaces and gasoline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Shutdown, storage, and restart
- Turn off or unplug connected appliances according to the owner’s manual.
- Use the generator’s normal shutdown control; do not stop it by pulling a spark-plug wire or defeating a safety device.
- Let the engine cool completely before moving, covering, transporting, or refueling.
- Inspect for damage, leaks, wetness, and blocked vents.
- Follow the manual for fuel stabilization or draining, battery care, oil checks, and cold-weather storage.
- Store gasoline outdoors in an approved container, away from ignition sources and living spaces.
Before restarting after a shutdown, repeat the outdoor-location, weather, cord, and exhaust checks. A change in wind or a new snowdrift can make yesterday’s placement unsafe.
