What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. You do not need a new TV or monitor for FSR itself. FidelityFX Super Resolution is integrated into a game’s rendering pipeline: the game can render internally at a lower resolution and upscale that image before sending the finished Xbox output to your existing screen. A display upgrade only becomes relevant when you want separate capabilities—such as 4K at 120 frames per second, HDR, or variable refresh rate—that your current display cannot provide.
What FSR actually does on Xbox
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a rendering and upscaling technique implemented by game developers. Instead of drawing every frame at the display’s final resolution, a game may render at a smaller internal resolution and then reconstruct or upscale the result into a target-resolution image. The Xbox console then outputs that completed frame through HDMI in the same way it outputs any other game image.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation includes an Xbox-specific sample showing integrations for FSR 1 and FSR 2. The sample describes a lower-resolution render being upscaled into target-resolution resources. That is evidence that developers can build FSR into Xbox games; it is not a player-facing display feature and it is not a compatibility list for released titles.

The sample demonstrates a 1080p-to-4K upscale on Xbox Series X. That example explains the rendering path, not a promise that every game will use those exact resolutions. It also mentions an implementation-specific resource optimization with a performance gain “in the order of 100us” in that sample context. That figure is a developer note for that implementation, not a general prediction of how many frames per second a player will gain.

FSR support belongs to the game
There is no evidence that every Xbox game supports FSR, that Xbox has a universal FSR switch, or that a particular title supports FSR 1 or FSR 2 without the game’s own documentation. Support can vary by title, platform version, graphics mode and update. If you want to know whether a specific game uses FSR, check that game’s patch notes, technical documentation or in-game graphics options.
Why your TV or monitor is separate from FSR
Think of the setup as two connected stages:
- Game rendering: the title chooses its internal render resolution and may apply FSR before producing a final frame.
- Video output: Xbox sends that frame at the selected output resolution and refresh rate over HDMI.
- Display presentation: the TV or monitor accepts the signal and shows it using its own panel, scaling and image-processing features.
FSR operates in the first stage. The display is involved only in receiving and presenting the signal. Replacing a 60 Hz television with a 120 Hz model does not activate FSR, and connecting a console to an HDMI 2.1 port does not add FSR to a game that lacks it.
Your Xbox can still output a game’s image at the console setting you select, subject to what the console, game and display support. A title that internally renders below 4K can use FSR to produce a higher-resolution output without requiring a new panel.
When a new display can still be worthwhile
A new screen may improve your Xbox experience for reasons unrelated to FSR. Xbox lists 4K gaming, performance up to 120 FPS, HDMI 2.1, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and AMD FreeSync among the relevant Series X capabilities. These features have their own requirements.

4K at up to 120 FPS is conditional
Xbox’s current Series X specifications list performance up to 120 FPS. The 4K-at-up-to-120-FPS statement is conditional on supported content and a supported display. It is not a guarantee that a particular game renders at 4K and 120 FPS, and it is not an FSR requirement.
HDMI 2.1 is about advanced display modes
Xbox Wire’s November 6, 2020 setup guidance states that Series X can display 4K content over any HDMI connection, while its most advanced features require an HDMI 2.1 connection. Treat that as guidance for the advanced modes discussed there, not as a prerequisite for FSR. Many televisions reserve HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for only one or two labeled ports, so the cable and port matter when you are pursuing 4K at 120 Hz or similar modes.
FreeSync and VRR are different from FSR
AMD describes FreeSync as a variable-refresh technology that requires a compatible display and compatible graphics hardware. It coordinates the display’s refresh timing with frame delivery. FSR changes how a game produces its image; FreeSync changes how the display presents changing frame rates. A screen can support one, both or neither, and FreeSync does not determine whether an Xbox game can use FSR.

If your existing TV or monitor already displays the Xbox output at the resolution and refresh rate you want, there is no FSR-related reason to replace it. Confirm the actual capabilities reported by the console rather than relying on a product headline.

- Open the Xbox display settings. On the console, go to Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Review 4K TV details. Select 4K TV details to see which resolution, HDR, refresh-rate and related features Xbox detects from the connected display.
- Check the connected input. Read the TV or monitor manual to identify the input that supports the desired mode. A display may advertise HDMI 2.1 while only a particular port supports its full bandwidth.
- Confirm the cable and signal path. If you use an AV receiver, soundbar or switch, verify that every device in the chain supports the same resolution, refresh rate and HDR or VRR features. Connecting the Xbox directly to the display can help isolate a limitation.
- Check the game’s mode. A title may offer separate quality and performance modes. FSR support, if present, may be tied to one mode rather than enabled globally.
For monitors, inspect the exact combination
Monitor specifications often list several maximum values that cannot all operate simultaneously. A model may support a high refresh rate at one resolution but a lower rate through another input. Check the manual for the exact Xbox resolution, refresh rate, HDR behavior and VRR range available through the HDMI port you will use.
A practical upgrade decision
Use the following decision path instead of shopping for FSR specifically:
- Keep the current display if it shows the Xbox output clearly at your preferred resolution and refresh rate and you are satisfied with its HDR, latency and motion handling. FSR can benefit a supported game on that screen.
- Consider a new display for 4K gaming if your current screen cannot accept or show 4K and you want the additional output detail. This is a resolution upgrade, not an FSR requirement.
- Consider a 120 Hz display if you play titles with a supported 120-FPS mode and want to see that extra motion smoothness. The game must support the mode, and the display must accept it at the chosen input.
- Consider HDMI 2.1 equipment when you specifically need the advanced bandwidth or features that Xbox associates with HDMI 2.1. Do not buy it merely to make FSR work.
- Consider HDR or VRR when those presentation improvements matter to you and your current display lacks them. Verify game and console support for the particular feature.
A useful optional shopping description is “4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1 gaming monitor for Xbox Series X.” That describes an upgrade target for high-end output modes; it should not be read as a list of FSR prerequisites.
Common misconceptions and fixes
“My TV is only 1080p, so FSR cannot help.”
FSR is applied before the final signal reaches the display. A lower-resolution TV does not prevent a game from using FSR internally. You may see less benefit than someone viewing a higher-resolution output, but replacing the TV is not necessary for the feature to operate.

“I bought an HDMI 2.1 cable, so FSR should appear.”
Cables and ports affect signal transport. They do not add rendering features to a game. Check whether the title supports FSR and whether the game’s graphics settings expose it.
“The console says 4K, so the game must render natively at 4K.”
The Xbox output setting and the game’s internal render resolution are separate. A game can output a 4K signal after rendering internally at a lower resolution and upscaling it. The console’s 4K status does not prove native 4K rendering.
“FSR guarantees 120 FPS.”
FSR can be part of a developer’s performance strategy, but the Xbox sample does not establish a universal frame-rate gain. Actual performance depends on the title’s engine, graphics settings, CPU and GPU workload, chosen mode and update.
“Every Xbox game should have an FSR toggle.”
There is no global Xbox FSR switch established by the developer documentation. If a supported title exposes the option, it will normally appear in that game’s graphics or display settings. Otherwise, consult the title’s own documentation or release notes.
Bottom line for Xbox owners
FSR is a game-side rendering technique, not a television or monitor feature. Microsoft’s Xbox development sample proves that developers can integrate FSR 1 and FSR 2, including a lower-resolution-to-target-resolution workflow, but it does not promise support in every retail game. Keep your current screen if it already meets your needs. Upgrade only for a separate goal—such as 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, VRR or an HDMI 2.1 display mode—and verify the exact game, input port and console-reported capabilities before buying.
