To play Xbox games through cloud gaming, use a supported device and region, sign in with your Microsoft account in the Xbox app or a supported browser, choose a cloud-playable game, and start streaming. Most catalog games require Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate; selected free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
What you need before you start
- A supported device and location. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on selected PCs, phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, smart TVs and streaming devices, and Meta Quest headsets. Support varies by exact model and market.
- Access to the game. Most games in the cloud catalog require an eligible Game Pass plan. Selected free-to-play titles, including Fortnite as an Xbox example, need only a free Microsoft account in a supported region. Some games you own or buy may also be streamable.
- A compatible input method. Most games require a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Select games offer Xbox touch controls. TV play also supports compatible controllers, including Xbox and Sony PlayStation controllers.
- A stable internet connection. Xbox gives 10 Mbps download speed as a general minimum. It notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Its TV guidance recommends 20 Mbps down and wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are service guidelines, not a guarantee of smooth streaming.
Game availability depends on the title, region, plan, platform, and changing catalog. A game being included in a subscription or owned by you does not by itself mean it can be streamed.

Choose a device and access route

For browser play, Xbox lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported options. Xbox Wire describes the general routes as opening the Xbox app and signing in on app-supported devices, or visiting Xbox.com/play and signing in on browser-supported devices. The precise menus can differ by platform.

Start a cloud gaming session
- Check your eligibility: confirm your country or region is supported and that your Game Pass plan covers the game, or that the title is one of the selected free-to-play games available with a free Microsoft account.
- Verify your device: check Xbox’s current supported-device information for the exact model rather than assuming every device in a product family works.
- Open the right service: launch the Xbox app on an app-supported device, or go to Xbox.com/play in a supported browser.
- Sign in: use the Microsoft account associated with your plan or game access.
- Connect input: pair a compatible controller over Bluetooth or plug it in by USB. If the game supports touch controls, you can use those instead.
- Find and launch the game: choose a title marked as playable through the cloud and select the cloud-play option. The game streams to your device; you do not need to install the game locally to play it this way.
If cloud gaming is unavailable or streams poorly
- The game does not appear: it may not be cloud-playable, may not be available in your region or on your plan, or may have left the catalog. Check the current catalog and the game’s cloud availability.
- Your device cannot open cloud play: verify the exact model and market are supported, then try the Xbox app or a supported browser route appropriate to that device.
- The game will not respond to input: connect a compatible controller through Bluetooth or USB, or confirm that the specific game supports touch controls.
- Streaming stutters or looks poor: check download speed and connection stability. For TVs, Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 20 Mbps down; for other devices, its general guidance is at least 10 Mbps, with 20 Mbps suggested for some devices or best quality.
Xbox notes that streaming performance also depends on your location and device, so meeting a speed guideline alone cannot ensure a particular result.
