Do you need Game Pass to use Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Not for every game. Xbox says supported free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account. For a broader catalog, Xbox advertises games through Game Pass tiers, but the cloud catalog and features depend on the current plan and the game. Xbox announced that subscription-based cloud gaming terms are scheduled to change in November 2026. The announcement describes monthly cloud-hour allowances by Game Pass plan and the option to buy cloud playtime through the Xbox Store to stream eligible owned games. Those changes are upcoming as of October 4, 2026; confirm the live terms after rollout rather than relying on an older plan description or assuming every tier includes the same cloud access. Can you play without an Xbox console?
Yes. A dedicated console is not listed as necessary when you play on a supported phone, tablet, PC, TV, Fire TV device, or headset. You still need a supported endpoint, internet access, and the correct entitlement for the game.
Do you need an app or can you use a browser?
Browser streaming is supported on Android, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS, according to Xbox Wire’s getting-started guide. How fast does your internet need to be?
Xbox Wire recommends an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection. To check whether your setup is close to that recommendation, measure your connection on the device and network you plan to use. A speed result at or above 20 Mbps does not by itself establish that the stream will be smooth; stability is part of Xbox’s guidance.

No single controller is required for all games. Xbox says Xbox controllers and third-party controllers are supported, with 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony DualSense among its examples.
