Use LiveKit’s transcript messages—not a playback timer—to drive transcript text in Flutter. For a standard conversation list, observe the LiveKit Flutter Session.messages collection. For custom captions or timed highlighting, consume the lk.transcription stream and update each in-progress segment in place using its stable segment ID.

In the Flutter client documentation, Session defaults to a TextMessageSender on lk.chat and a TranscriptionStreamReceiver on lk.transcription. Its messages include speech transcriptions and can also include typed chat, making the session path a natural fit when both belong in the same list.
The Flutter API reference identifies livekit_client 2.13.0. Check the package version your app actually uses before copying API details; signatures and behavior can change between releases.
Keep transcript state separate from audio playback
LiveKit carries agent speech on audio media tracks and transcript text on text streams. A transcript update is therefore not a playback-clock event: do not estimate caption timing with a separate timer or infer transcript state from locally played audio. Render the text updates LiveKit delivers.

When voice and transcription are enabled together, LiveKit synchronizes transcript delivery with speech by default. Its documentation describes text appearing word by word as the agent speaks; if speech is interrupted, the transcript is stopped and truncated to match the output already spoken. Turning off sync_transcription (or syncTranscription, depending on the API) sends text as soon as it is available instead of synchronizing it with speech. Keep synchronization enabled for captions intended to follow the agent’s voice. See the LiveKit Agents text and transcription guide.
Update each segment in place
Transcript streams can deliver multiple updates for one segment. Treat those updates as changes to an existing row, not as new chat messages each time. The Flutter TranscriptionStreamReceiver aggregates chunked updates into one received message per segment. It uses lk.segment_id as the message ID when present; LiveKit documents that segment ID as stable for the lifetime of the segment. If the segment ID is absent, the receiver falls back to the text stream ID.

- Use the segment ID as the row’s stable identity or Flutter list key.
- When an update arrives, find that segment’s existing row and update it rather than adding a duplicate.
- Apply the update according to its speaker and stream semantics: agent transcript chunks append until the segment is final, while user updates may resend the complete current segment and should replace the row’s text rather than append it again.
- Mark the segment complete when its final update arrives, while retaining the same row identity.
These rules follow the Flutter receiver’s documented behavior and prevent repeated user text or fragmented duplicate rows. See the TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference.
Add transcript timing only when the UI needs it
For ordinary captions, synchronized transcript messages are simpler than maintaining a separate timing model. If the interface needs timed highlighting or clickable words, LiveKit’s Agents guide describes TTS-aligned transcripts with JSON output. A timed chunk can include text, start_time, and end_time, measured relative to the current agent turn. The guide’s example values are illustrative, not universal timing values.

Word-level timing depends on the TTS provider. LiveKit lists Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Rime, and Speechify for word-level timestamps; other providers, including LiveKit Inference, are described as providing sentence-level alignment. The guide identifies transcription_node and TimedString as experimental, so avoid making an application’s core transcript display depend on those interfaces without checking the current documentation and package version. Practical implementation sequence
- Start with the session abstraction. If the screen is a conventional chat list, observe
Session.messagesand render each message’s text. - Switch to direct stream handling for a specific need. Use
lk.transcriptionorTranscriptionStreamReceiverwhen the UI needs custom caption presentation, segment control, or timing data. - Keep segment identity stable. Key transcript rows by
lk.segment_idwhere available, and update the corresponding in-progress row. - Match update behavior to the sender. Append agent chunks until final; replace user row text when an update contains the complete current segment.
- Keep speech synchronization on for speech-following captions. Disable
sync_transcriptiononly when the product should show available text immediately rather than align its delivery with speech. - Verify version-sensitive details. Confirm the API and provider timing support against the exact Flutter package and TTS provider versions in the app.
The session abstraction is the lower-complexity choice for a unified chat history. Direct stream handling is justified when the transcript itself needs specialized behavior; it also means the application owns more of the state-update logic.
