You can play an Xbox-published game on PS5 only if it has a native PlayStation release. Owning the Xbox version does not make it playable on a PS5. Cross-play and cross-progression are separate, game-specific features, and your purchase or save may not carry over.
Can you play Xbox games on a PS5?
Not the Xbox console edition itself. PlayStation 5 runs a game when there is a version made for PlayStation; a publisher’s Xbox identity does not prevent it from releasing that game on PS5, but it does not make Xbox editions compatible either. Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing or its official platform list for a PS5 release.

Xbox announced PlayStation releases for several of its published games. In February 2024, it named Pentiment and Hi-Fi RUSH for PS5, as well as Grounded and Sea of Thieves for PlayStation platforms. In May 2025, Xbox announced Gears of War: Reloaded for PS5, with an August 26, 2025 release date. These are examples, not a complete or live catalog; confirm current availability on the individual game’s official listing. A PS5 release answers whether you can play the game on PS5. It does not, by itself, establish whether you can play with friends on other systems or carry progress between platforms.

- Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together. Check that the specific game includes the platforms your group uses.
- Cross-progression lets some or all game progress carry between platforms, usually subject to the game’s account and save rules. Do not assume it is supported just because cross-play is.
- Cross-save is a related term for save data that can be used across platforms. The exact feature and limits depend on the game.
Xbox’s 2024 announcement said Grounded would support cross-play across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC, while Sea of Thieves would support cross-play across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Those examples do not establish the feature set for other games.
Do you need a Microsoft account to play with Xbox friends?
It depends on the game and the feature. For Gears of War: Reloaded, Xbox says cross-play works across platforms without a Microsoft account. Signing in with a Microsoft account enables cross-progression and cross-platform invitations. That rule is specific to this game; check the current official instructions for any other title. Do you have to buy the game again for PS5?
Unless a game’s own terms say otherwise, treat Xbox and PlayStation ownership as separate. The cited Xbox announcements identify separate platform releases; they do not say that buying a game on Xbox grants its PS5 edition. Before purchasing, check the PS5 store listing and the game’s entitlement terms. A shared account or cross-progression feature should not be taken as proof that you own both platform versions.

How to check a specific game before you buy or join friends
- Confirm there is a PS5 edition. Look up the exact title in the PlayStation Store or check the publisher’s official platform list. A release for PlayStation 4 does not by itself confirm a PS5 version.
- Check cross-play separately. Find the game’s official feature details and confirm that cross-play includes each platform in your group.
- Check progress and account requirements. Look for cross-progression or cross-save, what data transfers, and whether a Microsoft or publisher account is needed for that feature.
- Verify ownership terms. Confirm whether your existing Xbox purchase grants a PlayStation copy; if the terms do not say so, plan on needing the PS5 edition separately.
- Recheck current availability and instructions. Release plans and store listings can change. Xbox’s June 2026 showcase described Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives and said previously announced multiplatform releases would continue as planned.
