Neither Xbox Series X nor PS5 is an evidence-backed universal winner for open-world games. The better choice depends first on which games and versions you want, then on your existing library, disc needs, storage configuration, and local price. Manufacturer hardware figures alone cannot tell you which console runs a particular game better.
Start with the open-world games you want to play
Make a short list of the specific games that matter to you, including any edition or version you plan to buy. Check each title’s current PlayStation and Xbox listings for platform availability, release timing, and any platform-specific features. A game’s publisher or studio history is not enough to establish that it is exclusive.

Do the hardware specifications prove one console performs better?
No. Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X GPU as “12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs @1.825 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU” and specifies 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Sony’s cited CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists 10 TFLOPS graphics and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. These are manufacturer specifications, not tests of particular games. The consoles use different hardware designs, and game modes, patches, and implementations can affect results. A higher headline TFLOPS figure does not by itself establish better frame rates, image quality, traversal performance, or loading in an open-world game.
To decide on performance, look for credible, controlled comparisons of the same game, game version, and graphics mode on both consoles. Useful testing should report resolution and frame-rate modes, stability, loading, and traversal stutter. Without like-for-like testing for the title you care about, a general performance verdict would go beyond the available evidence.

How do backward compatibility and your existing games compare?
Xbox says Series X|S can play Xbox One games and select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; compatibility depends on the title. Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X product page links to its backward-compatibility information. PlayStation’s guidance describes PS4-game compatibility on PS5. Sony also specifies that PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. Check the exact game and your license type before assuming that a game you already own will carry over.

- Have PS4 discs? Choose a PS5 configuration with a usable disc drive; PS4 discs do not work with PS5 Digital Edition. Confirm the exact model before buying.
- Own digital games? Check the relevant account’s library and the title’s compatibility details for the console you are considering.
Check the exact model, disc drive, and storage
Console family names do not guarantee the same storage capacity or disc setup across every model. In the cited 2026 product information, Xbox lists Series X configurations with 1 TB, 1 TB digital, and 2 TB storage. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists 1 TB and 825 GB capacities across PS5 variants. These figures describe listed configurations, not how much space will be free after system software and games are installed.

Before purchase, verify the exact regional model or SKU, its usable disc-drive configuration, and its stated storage capacity on the current product listing. If you expect to install many large games, compare the storage options and expansion method for that specific console. Microsoft says supported Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards match internal storage performance and are sold separately; check the Xbox product page for current compatibility and configuration details.
