Install the free Vaultbreakers Demo from Steam, have every player update to the same current build, then use the demo’s friend or party controls to form a group. The host can bring in up to two friends, for a maximum of three players. The demo currently contains PvE missions only; the full game’s wider PvPvE design is not available in this demo.
What you need to play together
As of October 19, 2026, the practical way to play Vaultbreakers cooperatively on PC is through the free Vaultbreakers Demo on Steam. The full Steam release still has a release date listed as “To be announced,” so buying or installing a separate completed edition is not part of the current co-op setup.

- A Steam account for each participant.
- The Vaultbreakers Demo installed for each participant.
- All players on the same current game build.
- A group of no more than three players total: one host and up to two friends.
The demo is an online co-op experience, not a local split-screen mode. Everyone should launch the game through Steam and use the in-game friend or party controls to assemble the group before entering a mission.

1. Open the demo listing
Each player should search Steam for Vaultbreakers Demo and open that listing rather than relying on an older playtest installation. The currently documented co-op allowance applies to the free demo released on October 8, 2026.

- PLACE YOUR BID: Attempt to win a loot card by playing a high card into the central cell block or play a low card to keep it for yourself. Match the suit of the central warden card to earn a special action.
- BUILD YOUR VAULT: Stash loot cards in your vault, and arrange them wisely to maximize final scoring.
- SCORE POINTS: Earn gear tokens, the ultimate measure of success, based on the position of cards in your vault, their suit, or card patterns.
- ENDLESS VARIETY: Each game is a new challenge as scoring objectives change every time you play.

2. Install it on every PC
Select the install option on the demo page and wait for Steam to finish downloading. Every person who wants to join needs their own installation; a friend cannot join merely because the host owns or has launched the game.
3. Confirm that Steam has finished updating
Before launching, let Steam complete any queued download. BetaDwarf’s co-op announcement gives a specific warning: “Make sure to update your game before playing co-op, or you won’t be able to find your friends!” Treat that as a prerequisite, not an optional maintenance step. If Steam shows an update waiting in the Downloads view, finish it first.
4. Launch the same build
Start the demo after updates have completed. Do not mix the current demo with an older playtest build. A player who still has an obsolete build may be unable to appear in the host’s friend or party list even when both people are online in Steam.

Host: start the group
- Launch Vaultbreakers Demo from Steam.
- Open the demo’s friend or party controls.
- Create a group and select the friends you want to bring into the session.
- Wait until the intended players appear as members of the group.
- Enter a PvE mission together.
The official pages confirm online co-op and the three-player limit, but they do not publish the exact current invitation button names. Menu wording can therefore differ between builds. Look for controls associated with friends, party creation, inviting, or joining rather than expecting a particular label.
Friend: accept and join
- Launch the same current Vaultbreakers Demo build.
- Remain available in Steam and in the demo while the host creates the party.
- Use the game’s party or friend prompt to accept the host’s invitation, or select the host’s available group if the build presents a join option.
- Confirm that your name appears in the party before the host starts the mission.
If the invitation does not appear, do not repeatedly recreate the party first. Check the build and update status for every player, then restart the demo after Steam has finished any pending update.
How many friends can join Vaultbreakers?
The documented maximum is two friends joining one host, which creates a three-player party. The official description says players can “go solo or team up with up to two friends to tackle missions together.” That is a cap for the currently described co-op structure, not a promise that a larger Steam friends list can enter the same mission.
| Group arrangement | Players in the mission | Supported by the current demo description |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Yes |
| Host plus one friend | 2 | Yes |
| Host plus two friends | 3 | Yes; documented maximum |
| Host plus three or more friends | 4 or more | Exceeds the documented limit |
If your group contains four people, split into separate sessions rather than expecting the fourth player to join the same mission. The available documentation does not describe a larger lobby, spectator slot, or substitute matchmaking arrangement.

What co-op includes in the demo
PvE missions only
The demo currently features PvE only, so your party fights AI-controlled enemies. The broader Vaultbreakers description also discusses rival players and a PvPvE structure, but that broader design should not be treated as a feature of the demo. You should expect cooperative missions against AI opponents, not player-versus-player encounters in the present demo build.

The expedition and extraction-style loop
Vaultbreakers is presented around expeditions, collecting loot, developing a Haven, and deciding whether to continue or escape. In a co-op run, the useful planning question is therefore not simply “can we enter together?” but “when should this group stop pushing?” A party can coordinate its route, share the risk of fighting AI enemies, and decide collectively whether the potential reward justifies continuing the expedition.
The available description does not publish a detailed class system, mission timer, revive rule, loot-sharing rule, or exact escape interaction. Do not assume that one player can automatically recover another, that every item is shared, or that a failed extraction has a particular penalty unless the game’s current build explains it in its own interface.
What is not in this demo
- There is no documented PvP or PvPvE activity in the current demo; its stated limitation is PvE only.
- The full release is not yet dated beyond “To be announced” on Steam.
- The official material does not promise a party larger than three players.
- Exact invitation labels and a complete social-menu map have not been published.
Troubleshoot a friend who cannot be found
Check updates first
This is the most important check because the developer explicitly connects friend discovery to updating. Have every player open Steam’s Downloads view, finish all Vaultbreakers downloads, and only then launch the demo. If one person updates while another remains on an earlier build, the party list may not match.

Make sure everyone installed the demo
Ask each player to verify the title shown in Steam’s library and launch options. The current co-op instructions apply to Vaultbreakers Demo. An older playtest build, a shortcut pointing to a previous installation, or a different Vaultbreakers entry can prevent friends from appearing together.
Restart after updating
If a player was already in the demo when Steam downloaded an update, close the game and relaunch it. This makes sure the running process uses the newly installed build rather than the version that was open before the update finished.
Recreate the party after all players are visible
Once everyone is on the current demo build, have the host reopen the friend or party controls and create the group again. The official material does not specify a separate manual synchronization button, so rebuilding the party after the version check is the clearest supported recovery step.
Keep the diagnosis within the documented causes
The published announcement specifically identifies outdated software as a reason friends cannot be found. It does not establish a particular port-forwarding rule, router setting, account-region restriction, or firewall exception. Avoid changing those settings as a first response; verify the demo installation and update state before pursuing platform-level troubleshooting.
Controller and input options
Steam lists partial controller support for the demo. The documented devices are:
| Controller type | Steam listing status | Connection qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Controllers | Supported under partial controller support | No USB-only qualification is stated |
| DualShock Controllers | Supported under partial controller support | USB only |
| DualSense Controllers | Supported under partial controller support | USB only |
“Partial” support means you should not assume that every menu, prompt, or wireless configuration behaves identically to a fully controller-first game. An Xbox controller is the clearest documented choice if your group prefers gamepads. DualShock and DualSense users should connect by USB, as specified in the Steam feature list. Keyboard and mouse remain an alternative if a controller does not behave as expected, but the available listing does not provide a complete keyboard map.

| Question | Vaultbreakers Demo | Full Steam release |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Free demo released October 8, 2026 | Release date listed as “To be announced” |
| Online co-op | Yes | The broader description discusses teaming up, but the full release is not yet available |
| Party size | Host plus up to two friends; three players total | The available listing does not establish a different final limit |
| Combat mode | PvE only | The broader design describes PvPvE elements, but final availability is not established |
| Core activities described | Expeditions, loot, Haven progression, and choosing when to continue or escape | The same broader concepts are described, with final scope pending release |
This distinction matters when friends compare videos, older playtests, or promotional descriptions. A feature mentioned for the planned game may not be active in the demo you can install today. Use the demo’s own menus and mission rules as the authority for what your party can do in the current build.
A reliable pre-mission checklist
- Every player installed Vaultbreakers Demo from Steam.
- Steam completed all updates before anyone launched.
- Everyone is running the same current build, not an older playtest.
- The party contains no more than three players.
- The host created the group through the demo’s friend or party controls.
- Each friend appears in the party before the mission begins.
- The group understands that the current demo is PvE only.
- DualShock and DualSense users connected by USB, if using those controllers.
Checking these items in order prevents the most common mismatch: one person trying to invite friends from an old build while the others are already on the updated demo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to expect during a co-op expedition
Coordinate the decision to continue
The game’s stated loop asks players to balance expedition progress and the decision to escape. In a three-player group, agree on a simple callout before entering: who initiates movement, how the group signals that it wants to leave, and whether everyone is ready before taking a higher-risk fight. These are coordination practices rather than documented game rules, so adapt them to the prompts and systems shown by your build.
Keep the party together
The available material confirms that missions can be tackled together but does not specify the consequences of separation. Staying within sight or communication range is a sensible co-op habit, especially while learning the demo, because it avoids making assumptions about revives, shared loot, or regrouping mechanics that the published information does not define.
Use the demo to learn the loop
Because the current demo is PvE only, it is a controlled way to learn expedition flow, loot collection, Haven progression, and the continue-or-escape decision with friends. Treat reports about rival-player encounters as information about the broader PvPvE vision rather than a guarantee that you will meet those opponents in the demo.
Where to look for changing information
Vaultbreakers’ official site directs players toward Steam wishlisting, the game’s Discord community, and a Notion page for upcoming playtests. Those channels are the most relevant places to watch for changed invitation labels, new demo builds, or a future announcement about the full release. Until a new build says otherwise, the current practical limits remain a free Steam demo, PvE missions, and groups of up to three players.
