You can play TV audio through an Echo’s AUX input if the exact Echo model has a 3.5 mm line-in and your TV has a compatible analog audio output. Connect them with a stereo AUX cable, select the TV’s audio output if needed, and enable the input in the Alexa app if required. An Echo’s 3.5 mm jack is not always an input, so check both devices before connecting them.
Check that both devices have compatible ports
Confirm the Echo jack accepts audio
The label “AUX” does not tell you whether a jack is an input or output. Check the specifications or manual for your exact Echo model and confirm that it supports analog line-in. Some Echo models have no AUX jack, and some jacks are for audio output rather than input.

Ars Technica reported on October 6, 2026, that the Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo (3rd Gen), Echo Studio (1st Gen), and Echo (4th Gen) were among the models affected by Amazon disabling voice commands for AUX control. The report says their physical AUX inputs still work and the Alexa app retains controls to enable or disable a supported input. This is not a complete list of Echo models with line-in, so verify your model rather than relying on the jack’s appearance. Read the Ars Technica report.
Confirm the TV has analog audio out
The wired AUX method also requires an analog audio output on the TV. Check the TV’s manual for its audio outputs and sound settings; available connectors and menu labels vary by model. A TV with only optical or HDMI audio does not connect directly to a 3.5 mm line-in with a basic AUX cable.

Connect the TV to the Echo with AUX
- Check the port roles. Confirm that the TV port is analog audio out and the Echo port is analog line-in.
- Connect a stereo 3.5 mm male-to-male AUX cable. Plug one end into the TV’s analog audio output and the other into the Echo’s line-in.
- Select the TV audio output if needed. Use the TV’s sound settings to route audio to its analog output. Consult the TV manual for the correct setting and supported audio format.
- Enable AUX input in the Alexa app if necessary. The available controls and navigation can vary by Echo model; use the device’s settings rather than assuming one menu path applies to every Echo.
- Play audio on the TV and check the Echo. If there is no sound, verify the cable, both port roles, the TV output selection, and the Echo’s input setting.
As of October 6, 2026, Ars Technica reported that voice commands such as “Alexa, set aux input” and “Alexa, play from line in” no longer control AUX input on the affected Echo generations. Use the Alexa app where input controls are available; the report says the physical input remains functional.
If the TV and Echo do not have matching analog ports
Do not treat an HDMI-to-3.5 mm cable as a passive substitute for a compatible analog connection. A converter or audio extractor may be an option, but its input format, output format, connector direction, power requirements, and compatibility with the Echo’s line-in all need to match the specific equipment. There is no single adapter established here as a universal solution.

Echo Link and Echo Link Amp are not generic TV audio inputs: Amazon’s connection guide lists their supported connections and explicitly says they do not support TV or video connections. See Amazon’s Echo Link connection guide.

Use Alexa Home Theater over HDMI ARC instead
Alexa Home Theater is a separate option, not an AUX connection. Amazon says it requires compatible Fire TV and Echo devices and a TV with HDMI ARC. Compatibility depends on the specific combination, and some setups support Fire TV audio only rather than audio from other HDMI sources such as a game console or cable box. For a compatible setup, Amazon’s instructions call for connecting the Fire TV to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC, enabling HDMI ARC and possibly HDMI CEC, and choosing the appropriate TV audio settings. Suggested labels include PCM or Stereo; for Echo Studio, the TV may offer Bypass, Passthrough, or Auto. The exact wording varies by TV. Follow Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater HDMI ARC setup instructions.
Troubleshoot an HDMI ARC setup with no sound
- Confirm that the TV supports HDMI ARC and that the Fire TV is connected to the ARC-labeled HDMI port.
- Check that HDMI ARC is enabled; HDMI CEC may also need to be enabled.
- Set the TV’s sound output to HDMI and use an audio format accepted by the TV and connected devices.
- Check the exact Fire TV and Echo models against Amazon’s compatibility guide, especially if you expect audio from other HDMI sources.
