Install the correct edition
Look for Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, not an older listing or a legacy release. The Complete Edition is the version associated with the PS5 release, updated presentation and extra Toy Box content.

Update the console
If the game refuses to launch or the PS5 store page reports a requirement, install the latest PS5 system software. Restart the console after the update if the title still appears unavailable.
Prepare controllers for solo or co-op play
- For solo play, pair one DualSense controller before launching the game.
- For local co-op, pair a second controller and assign it to another user or a guest before choosing the co-op option.

How Story Mode works
Expect selected movie moments, not a scene-for-scene replay
Story Mode revisits important situations from the film rather than reproducing every scene. The Complete Edition listing specifically names the train rescue, Operation Playtime, the junkyard, Andy’s room and Sunnyside Daycare. These locations provide the campaign’s framework, but the game turns them into playable challenges with platforming, combat, character swaps and objectives.

- Woody: can swing on his pull string. Look for prompts or anchor points that require a swinging move instead of a normal jump.
- Buzz Lightyear: has the strength to throw toys long distances. Objects or gaps that cannot be handled by another character may be designed for Buzz.
- Jessie: has her own role-specific abilities. When a prompt or route does not make sense for Woody or Buzz, check whether Jessie is the intended character.
The exact ability prompts appear on screen. Treat them as progression cues: if an obstacle remains impassable, the solution is often a character swap rather than repeated attacks with the character currently selected.
Use the campaign’s structure to avoid getting stuck
- Read the objective shown when a scene begins and note any character icon or ability reference.
- Explore nearby platforms and interactive objects before trying to force a route with attacks.
- When the game presents a swap opportunity, test each available character until one produces the contextual prompt.
- After using an ability, follow the newly opened route instead of backtracking immediately; many challenges chain one character’s action into the next.
- Use the pause or information screen to review objectives if you lose track of the next target.
The ending is not identical to the film’s final scene
Pixar story editor Jason Katz explained that the original game had a beginning, middle and end and followed the movie, but that the film’s ending scene was not necessarily the game’s ending scene. In practice, Story Mode should be treated as a game adaptation built around selected movie events, not as an interactive replacement for every final shot.
Toy Story 3 PS5 controls: what is actually verified
The Complete Edition does not publish a button-by-button chart
The current PS5 product pages confirm DualSense support and vibration, but they do not provide a complete button assignment list. For the authoritative mapping on your installation, pause the game and open its Options or controller-information screen, then follow the contextual prompts displayed during each activity.

Legacy controls for orientation only
A published PSP/PS2 reference gives the following historical layout. Use it to understand the kinds of actions the older game assigned to each input, not as a guaranteed PS5 map.

The DualSense has no Select or Start buttons labeled that way, so do not try to translate this table mechanically. Check the on-screen prompt and the current pause menu instead.
Practical control habits
- Center the camera before a long jump so you can judge distance consistently.
- Look for an interaction prompt before attacking an object; action and combat are separate functions in the legacy layout.
- When controlling Buzz in a laser-focused activity, watch for a prompt that identifies the special action rather than assuming the normal attack button applies.
- Use the hint command when available instead of repeatedly testing random attacks against a blocked object.
How to play two-player co-op on one PS5
Set up local co-op
- Turn on and pair both DualSense controllers with the PS5.
- Assign the second controller to another account or a guest profile.
- Launch Toy Story 3 Complete Edition and wait at the main menu.
- Choose the local or co-op option before entering a level or Toy Box activity.
- Confirm that both players appear in the lobby or character-selection screen.
- Select Story Mode or Toy Box Mode and follow the role prompts shown for each player.
The store listing explicitly supports two-player co-op in both Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. This is couch co-op on one PS5. No online co-op feature is advertised in the cited product information, so do not expect a friend on another console to join through an online lobby.

The 2010 developer Q&A describes cooperative play and team-based moves. That design makes the two characters complementary rather than interchangeable. If one player is Woody and the other is Buzz, divide attention between movement and the object or gap that needs Buzz’s strength. If a route appears stalled, ask which character’s ability the objective is signaling before both players continue attacking.

Recover when the second player does not join
- Pair the second controller before selecting the co-op mode, not after the level has already loaded.
- Check that the controller is assigned to a separate user or guest rather than duplicating the first player’s profile.
- Return to the main menu and re-enter the co-op option if the second character never appears.
- Install any pending PS5 system update if the game does not recognize the controller.
What Toy Box Mode offers
A customizable western town
Toy Box Mode moves the action to the customizable western town of Woody’s Roundup. Residents issue quests, and completing those quests earns gold. Gold is the progression currency for personalizing the settlement.
Build, decorate and dress the town
You can build and decorate buildings, customize the town’s appearance, dress townsfolk and play as Woody, Buzz or Jessie. This mode is less about reaching a single ending and more about choosing which resident requests, construction tasks and experiments to pursue next.
Use vehicles and treat the town as a test space
The open structure lets you try vehicles, explore at your own pace and combine character abilities with the environment. When you are unsure what to do next, speak with residents, complete an available quest and spend the resulting gold on a visible town improvement. That loop gives the sandbox a clear rhythm without forcing a fixed mission order.
Complete Edition additions
The Complete Edition adds Emperor Zurg to Toy Box Mode and includes four additional theme packs. It also advertises upgraded graphics, resolution and framerate. These additions apply to the Toy Box experience; they do not turn Story Mode into a scene-for-scene version of the movie.

A sensible first-session plan
For a solo player
- Confirm that the title on the PS5 home screen is Toy Story 3 Complete Edition.
- Open Story Mode and play through the opening objective without skipping the ability prompts.
- When the game introduces a new character, test that character’s distinctive interaction before moving on.
- Use the pause or information menu whenever the next objective is unclear.
- After you have seen the core character abilities, enter Toy Box Mode and accept a resident quest.
- Spend the first gold reward on a town change you can immediately see, then continue exploring.
For two players
- Pair both controllers and assign the second one before launching the co-op activity.
- Start in Story Mode so both players learn how character-specific routes work.
- Call out prompts aloud: one player can watch for the required ability while the other positions the character.
- Move to Toy Box Mode after the team is comfortable swapping roles and coordinating actions.
Common problems and fixes
The PS5 says the game needs an update
Install the latest PS5 system software, then restart the console and try again. The store listing warns that current system software may be required.
You cannot find a published PS5 control chart
That documentation is not included on the current product pages. Use the in-game Options or controller-information menu and the contextual prompts. The historical PSP/PS2 table above is only an orientation aid.
A path in Story Mode looks impossible
Stop attacking and inspect the area for a character prompt. Switch among Woody, Buzz and Jessie; the route may require Woody’s pull-string swing, Buzz’s long-distance throw or Jessie’s specific ability.

You expected online multiplayer
