The best first-time route is release order, but you do not need to play every Fire Emblem game in one continuous sequence. The series is an anthology of mostly separate worlds. For a modern introduction, start with Three Houses or Engage. For connected stories, follow the Archanea–Valentia, Jugdral, Elibe, or Tellius sequences below. Treat remakes as replacements for their originals when access is limited.
What order should you play the Fire Emblem games in?
Choose your order according to what you want from the series:

- To see the series evolve: use Japanese first-release order.
- To start easily: begin with Three Houses or Engage, both on Nintendo Switch and set in self-contained worlds.
- To follow a continuous plot: play one of the connected-world sequences rather than forcing all games into one timeline.
- To understand Marth’s story: play Shadow Dragon, then Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and New Mystery of the Emblem where available.
- To play a direct sequel pair: choose Path of Radiance followed by Radiant Dawn.
Fire Emblem has recurring themes, mechanics and characters, but most entries do not share a setting. A game can be a remake, a prequel, a distant-future continuation or an entirely independent story without requiring knowledge of the others.
Fire Emblem games in release order
The list below uses each mainline game’s first Japanese release. This is the clearest historical order because it shows how the tactical systems, presentation and campaign structures changed over time. A remake is identified where it is not the original release.

The later platform dates are also recorded in Nintendo’s official Fire Emblem World history: Shadow Dragon in 2008, New Mystery in 2010, Awakening in 2012, Fates in 2015, Echoes in 2017 and Three Houses in 2019. The original 1990–2023 sequence is useful as a historical map, but it is not a required playthrough.
Story order: the connected worlds
There is no single chronological order that combines every game. Instead, Fire Emblem has several continuities. Play within one of these groups when you want narrative links; stop or change worlds whenever you prefer a new cast and setting.
Archanea and Valentia: Marth, Alm and Awakening’s distant future
- Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light or its DS remake, Shadow Dragon.
- Gaiden or its 3DS remake, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
- Mystery of the Emblem or the Japan-only DS remake, New Mystery of the Emblem.
- Awakening, set roughly two millennia later in the renamed land of Ylisse.
The first and third entries follow Marth’s Archanean campaigns. Gaiden and Echoes move to Valentia, a neighboring part of the same shared setting, and follow Alm and Celica after the first Archanean war. The opening history in the Shadow Dragon manual says, “A century later, Medeus was reborn,” describing the return of the central threat after Anri defeated Medeus with Falchion and Akaneia was rebuilt. That background leads into Marth’s campaign rather than requiring you to know a separate prequel.
Awakening is not a next-year sequel. Its Ylissean setting is a distant future of the Archanean world, with approximately two thousand years separating its events from the earlier Marth games. It uses that history as context while telling a new story, so it remains playable on its own.

Jugdral: the generational order
- Genealogy of the Holy War, first generation.
- Thracia 776. Its events occur during the gap in Genealogy‘s two-generation narrative.
- Genealogy of the Holy War, second generation.
The most natural story experience is to begin Genealogy, reach the point where its timeline pauses, play Thracia 776, and then return to Genealogy for the second generation. Because both originals launched on Super Famicom and were not broadly released outside Japan, this is primarily a historical or preservation-focused route. If you cannot access them, there is no later officially released substitute that turns the entire Jugdral sequence into a modern, widely available package.
Elibe: the prequel that released second
- The Blazing Blade (known internationally simply as Fire Emblem).
- The Binding Blade.
This is the clearest case where story order differs from release order. Japan received The Binding Blade in 2002, then The Blazing Blade in 2003. In the fiction, however, Blazing Blade is the prequel and introduces the history that leads to Roy’s campaign in Binding Blade. If you want the Elibe narrative in chronological order, start with the internationally released Fire Emblem and follow it with The Binding Blade. If you are studying development history, keep their release order instead.
Tellius: the direct sequel pair
- Path of Radiance.
- Radiant Dawn.
These are the strongest conventional sequel relationship in the series. Radiant Dawn continues the Tellius setting three years after Path of Radiance, revisits the consequences of the earlier war and expands the playable perspective. Starting with Radiant Dawn is possible, but it assumes knowledge of characters and political events established in Path of Radiance.
Fates: three routes, not three chronological games
Fire Emblem Fates presents Birthright, Conquest and Revelation as alternate routes from a shared premise. They are not sequential chapters that must be played in numerical order. Choose the route that matches the kind of campaign you want, then treat the others as parallel interpretations of the same conflict. Revelation explores information withheld by the other routes, but it still should not be described as a conventional sequel.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Three Houses: one setting with optional route comparisons
Three Houses takes place in Fódlan and divides its central conflict into house routes. Select a house at the relevant decision point and complete that campaign. Additional routes are optional comparisons within the same setting; they are not separate games in a franchise-wide chronology. No earlier Fire Emblem knowledge is required to understand the characters, factions or history introduced in Fódlan.
Engage: an independent Elyos story
Engage is set in Elyos and follows Alear’s awakening and quest to gather 12 Emblem Rings. Its Emblem characters reference heroes associated with earlier Fire Emblem games, but those appearances are part of the game’s premise rather than evidence of a shared contemporary timeline. In an official developer interview, Nintendo’s team answered the continuity question directly: “No, this is a brand-new title with no story connection to any of the previous games from the Fire Emblem series.” You can therefore play Engage before or after any other entry without missing a required plot chapter.
Originals, remakes and which version to choose
When a remake exists, select it unless your goal is to study the original design. The story relationship remains the same, but remakes generally provide modern presentation and revised systems.

|---|---|---|
| Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light | Shadow Dragon (Nintendo DS) | Use the DS game for Marth’s campaign when you want the more accessible version; use the Famicom original for historical comparison. |
| Gaiden | Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (Nintendo 3DS) | Use Echoes for the Valentian story unless you specifically want the 1992 structure. |
| Mystery of the Emblem | New Mystery of the Emblem (Nintendo DS) | Use New Mystery for the expanded remake if you can access the Japan-only release. |
Remakes are alternatives, not extra mandatory chapters. Playing both versions of every remade game will add historical context but will also repeat much of the same plot.

Best starting points for different players
If you are completely new
Start with Three Houses if you want a character-focused campaign, social hub and multiple routes in one self-contained setting. Start with Engage if you prefer a more direct, map-focused modern structure and a story that does not depend on earlier games. Neither choice creates a continuity problem.
If you want Marth’s complete arc
Use Shadow Dragon as the practical starting point, continue with Echoes for the connected Valentian branch, and then play New Mystery of the Emblem if you can access its Japan-only release. Awakening can follow as a distant-future epilogue, although its plot stands independently.
If you want a polished two-game narrative
Play Path of Radiance followed by Radiant Dawn. This route has an explicit three-year time jump and the clearest direct-sequel structure in the series.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want the Elibe prequel relationship
Play The Blazing Blade first and The Binding Blade second. Remember that this is chronological order, not release order: the prequel arrived in Japan one year after the sequel.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you want the experimental, generational saga
Play Genealogy of the Holy War through its first generation, insert Thracia 776 during the timeline gap, and return to Genealogy for its second generation. This route is complicated by the original games’ Japanese-only Super Famicom releases.
If you want historical context
Follow the 1990–2023 release list. Expect limited modern availability for several early games, Japan-only releases such as New Mystery of the Emblem, and platform changes from Famicom and Super Famicom through Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Wii, DS, 3DS and Switch. Release order is valuable for understanding mechanics and design changes, but it is not a requirement for enjoying later entries.
How to plan a playthrough without getting stuck
- Pick one objective. Decide whether you are following release history, one connected world or simply looking for a first game.
- Choose a version. Select a remake over an original when both tell the same central story and the remake is the version you can reasonably access.
- Check region and platform first. The original Binding Blade, several early entries and New Mystery have Japan-only or limited international availability. Do not build a route around a title you cannot legally obtain.
- Do not treat alternate routes as sequels. In Fates and Three Houses, routes explore the same setting or premise from different perspectives.
- Stop at a natural boundary. Finishing one world’s campaign gives you a complete experience. You do not need to continue into another continuity to understand the ending.
Common ordering mistakes
- Assuming every protagonist shares one timeline. Marth, Ike, Roy, Byleth and Alear belong to different settings or eras unless a game explicitly uses them as historical references.
- Playing Binding Blade before Blazing Blade for story reasons. That follows release order but reverses the Elibe chronology.
- Calling Radiant Dawn a standalone sequel. It can be started alone, but Path of Radiance supplies important context.
- Expecting Engage to continue Three Houses. Nintendo explicitly describes Engage as having no story connection to previous Fire Emblem games.
- Playing every remake as a new plot chapter. Shadow Dragon, Echoes and New Mystery revisit earlier stories rather than extending the franchise chronology in the way a new sequel would.
Quick decision table
| Your priority | Recommended route | Continuity | Accessibility note |
|---|---|---|---|
| First game with no prerequisites | Three Houses | Standalone Fódlan setting with optional routes | Nintendo Switch release |
| Direct tactical campaign and series references | Engage | Standalone Elyos story | Nintendo Switch release |
| Marth’s story | Shadow Dragon → Echoes → New Mystery | Archanea and Valentia continuity | New Mystery released only in Japan |
| Best direct sequel pair | Path of Radiance → Radiant Dawn | Tellius; three-year gap | Original GameCube and Wii releases |
| Prequel followed by sequel | Blazing Blade → Binding Blade | Elibe | Binding Blade first released in Japan |
| Generational narrative | Genealogy → Thracia 776 during its gap → Genealogy | Jugdral | Original Super Famicom releases |
| Full historical progression | 1990–2023 release order | Multiple worlds and eras | Several early and Japan-only titles have limited modern availability |
The Bottom Line
There is no mandatory franchise-wide order. Use release order for series history, choose Three Houses or Engage as an independent starting point, and follow the specific continuity—Archanea, Jugdral, Elibe or Tellius—when story connections matter.
