The anthology’s episodes have different protagonists and situations, so you can start elsewhere, but release order gives you the clearest introduction and preserves the way the series has expanded from solo survivor stories to online co-op.
The complete Fears to Fathom play order
The official series description presents each episode as a short psychological-horror story narrated by a survivor. Every chapter follows a new protagonist in a new place, which means there is no campaign-style progression that forces you to unlock one episode before another. The practical first-playthrough order is therefore the order in which the episodes were released.

Home Alone is listed as free to play on Steam; do not assume the same pricing for the other chapters.
Why release order is the best first playthrough
Release order is a recommendation for context, not a mandatory story sequence. The official site describes an anthology of separate, short survivor-narrated stories rather than one continuous plot. You are not required to finish Miles’s story before starting Holly’s, and there is no stated rule that later episodes spoil a single linear mystery from an earlier one.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Starting with the first release still has three advantages:
- It introduces the format. Home Alone establishes the basic idea of a brief horror story told from one survivor’s perspective.
- It shows the series’ growth. Moving from a teenager’s home situation to a road trip, a house-sitting job, an isolated lookout, a group rental and finally an online co-op chapter lets you experience the anthology’s changing settings in order.
- It gives later references their intended context. Even when episodes stand alone, playing them chronologically lets you notice how the premise and presentation develop without jumping ahead.
Players who care only about a particular setting can safely choose another starting point. You will not be locked out of later chapters, and the separate protagonists make it easy to follow an individual episode on its own.
Episode-by-episode guide
1. Home Alone
Home Alone is the natural entry point and the first release in the series. You play Miles, a 14-year-old left at home while his parents are away for work. That setup places the horror in a familiar domestic environment and makes the episode a straightforward introduction to the anthology’s survivor-focused approach.
Choose Home Alone when you want the clearest starting premise, a home-invasion-style situation, or a chapter you can try without buying an episode first. Steam lists it as free to play. Because it is the opening release, it is also the safest choice for a first session when you want to understand what a typical Fears to Fathom story feels like before moving to the more unusual locations.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Norwood Hitchhike
Norwood Hitchhike follows Holly Gardner, 19, during an interstate drive that ends with a stay at a motel in Norwood Valley. Its travel-and-motel setup changes the kind of vulnerability at the center of the story: the protagonist is away from home, in transit, and dependent on an unfamiliar stop.
Play it second if you are following the recommended order. It is also the best first choice for someone specifically drawn to road-trip tension, roadside stops and motel settings. Starting here does not require prior knowledge of Miles or Home Alone, because the episode has its own protagonist and situation.
3. Carson House
Carson House puts Noah Baker, 18, in the role of a house-sitter for a media personality. The key appeal is the domestic setting viewed through someone temporarily responsible for another person’s home. That premise differs from Home Alone: Noah is not simply a child left in his own house, and the house belongs to someone with a public profile.
Recommended Free Tools
Follow the release order by playing Carson House after Norwood Hitchhike. If your preference is surveillance-flavored domestic tension or the uneasy responsibility of watching someone else’s property, it is a reasonable standalone starting point. You can understand Noah’s situation without completing either earlier chapter.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Ironbark Lookout
Ironbark Lookout moves the anthology away from houses and motels. Jack Nelson, 24, transfers to a fire lookout in Ironbark State Park, giving the episode an isolated wilderness and tower setting. The change of environment is the main reason to place it after the first three chapters in a chronological run: it demonstrates how the series can keep its survivor-story format while relocating the danger to a remote work assignment.
Pick Ironbark Lookout first if an isolated lookout or state-park setting is more appealing than a domestic or travel scenario. It remains self-contained according to the anthology description, so choosing it early does not create a continuity problem.
5. Woodbury Getaway
Woodbury Getaway centers on Sydney Harper, 23, who plans a weekend at a Woodbury rental with college friends. The group-vacation premise gives this chapter a different social context from the earlier single-protagonist setups. The rental is temporary, the trip is planned as a getaway, and the presence of friends shapes the situation.
Play it fifth to preserve the release progression, or start here if vacation-rental horror and a college-friends scenario are your priorities. You do not need to know the preceding survivors to follow Sydney’s story.

6. Scratch Creek
Scratch Creek is the sixth release and the major format change in the current lineup. The official Steam announcement states: “This episode is exclusively online co-op upon release.” That wording matters: unlike the earlier solo-focused chapters, Scratch Creek requires an online co-op setup at release rather than offering a solo mode as the default way to play.
Choose Scratch Creek when playing with another person online is the deciding factor. Before launching, confirm that everyone has the required Steam access, a stable connection and an agreed play time. If you are playing alone, begin with one of the earlier episodes instead; the announcement does not establish a solo option for Scratch Creek at release.
Does the order matter for the story?
No strict order is required. The official description calls the games an episodic anthology, with each episode presented as a separate short story narrated by survivors. The protagonists, locations and immediate situations change from chapter to chapter. There is no official statement that an earlier episode must be completed to understand a later one.
Order matters only in the softer sense of presentation. Release order lets you see the series from its 2021 beginning through the 2026 co-op expansion. It also avoids accidentally starting with the newest format if what you wanted was a traditional solo introduction. If you already know that you prefer one setting, select the matching episode without worrying that you have broken a required sequence.

Which episode should you start with?
| Your priority | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A first introduction to the series | Home Alone | It is the first release, has the clearest introductory setup and is listed as free to play on Steam. |
| A road trip and motel setting | Norwood Hitchhike | Holly’s interstate drive leads to a motel in Norwood Valley. |
| House-sitting and domestic surveillance tension | Carson House | Noah is watching a media personality’s house. |
| An isolated wilderness workplace | Ironbark Lookout | Jack transfers to a fire lookout in Ironbark State Park. |
| A group vacation rental | Woodbury Getaway | Sydney’s weekend plan involves a Woodbury rental and college friends. |
| Online co-op | Scratch Creek | The official announcement says it is exclusively online co-op upon release. |
This is a preference guide, not a ranking of quality. The available information establishes each episode’s premise and format, but it does not provide a common review score or a controlled comparison of difficulty, length or scare intensity. Choose by setting and play format rather than treating the release number as a quality grade.
A practical first-playthrough plan
For a solo player
- Begin with Home Alone to learn the anthology’s survivor-narrated structure.
- Continue through Norwood Hitchhike, Carson House, Ironbark Lookout and Woodbury Getaway in release order.
- Check the current Scratch Creek Steam listing and the latest official announcement before scheduling the finale, because its release format is online co-op rather than a solo campaign.
- Keep each episode’s protagonist and setting in mind as separate stories; do not expect a single character to carry across the series.
For two or more online players
- Use the first five episodes as solo anthology chapters if each player wants to experience the earlier stories independently.
- For Scratch Creek, agree on who will host or invite, verify that every participant can access the Steam release, and plan to play at the same time.
- Start with Scratch Creek only if online co-op is your primary interest; otherwise, begin at Home Alone and treat the co-op chapter as the chronological endpoint.
For a setting-first player
Use the preference table rather than release order. A motel fan can begin with Norwood Hitchhike, a wilderness fan with Ironbark Lookout, and a vacation-rental fan with Woodbury Getaway. After that first choice, return to the release sequence if you want to see the anthology’s progression.
Availability, pricing and platform checks
Steam listings can change, and the catalog information is current to 2026 rather than a permanent guarantee. Check each episode’s current store page for ownership requirements, regional availability, system requirements and any price shown at the time of purchase. The confirmed exception in the available information is Home Alone, which is listed as free to play on Steam.
Scratch Creek deserves an additional check because its official announcement specifies online co-op upon release. Store pages can later be updated, but you should not infer a solo mode, local co-op option or a different release format unless the current listing explicitly says so.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the episodes are one continuous campaign. They are presented as separate survivor stories, so you can choose by setting.
- Skipping Home Alone because it is short or free. It is the series’ first release and the most direct introduction to the format.
- Treating release order as a requirement. It is recommended for context, not required for comprehension.
- Planning Scratch Creek as a solo purchase without checking. The official announcement describes it as exclusively online co-op upon release.
- Relying on an old price or availability claim. Verify the current Steam listing, especially if you are buying outside the region or date in which the catalog was checked.
Recommended order in one line
Home Alone → Norwood Hitchhike → Carson House → Ironbark Lookout → Woodbury Getaway → Scratch Creek. Follow that sequence for the intended release progression; depart from it only when a particular setting or online co-op format better matches how you want to play.
