Fallout games in release order
This sequence follows when the six mainline games were released, from the original 1997 game through the 2018 online multiplayer entry. Bethesda’s Fallout timeline identifies these games and their release years.

- Fallout 3 (2008)
- Fallout: New Vegas (2010)
- Fallout 4 (2015)
- Fallout 76 (2018)
Choose release order if you want to experience the series in the sequence these mainline games appeared. It also puts the original games first, before the later entries’ different settings and approaches.
Fallout games in chronological order
For chronology, the dates below refer to each game’s principal story setting, not its release. Bethesda’s timeline places Fallout 76 25 years after the Great War of 2077; it dates the other mainline settings as shown here.

- Fallout 4 — 2287 for its main story
Chronological order suits players who would rather move forward through the fictional timeline than follow release history. It begins with Fallout 76, then jumps to the original Fallout, whose story is set in 2161.
Why Fallout 4’s opening does not change its place
Fallout 4 opens in 2077, before the events of Fallout 76. Its main story, however, takes place in 2287, after Fallout: New Vegas. That is why it belongs last in the principal-setting chronology above.

Which order should you choose?

In a 17 October 2022 article, Bethesda Content Manager Parker Wilhelm wrote: “The universe of Fallout is rich and rewarding for those who love to dig deep into the lore, but any Fallout game can be your first.” You can begin with a setting, premise, or game that appeals to you rather than treating earlier entries as required homework.

Fallout has more games than the six mainline entries in these lists. Bethesda’s timeline also names Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (2001), Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (2004), Fallout Shelter (2015), and Fallout Pinball (2016). The publisher describes these as part of the franchise, but its page does not place all of them in a complete in-universe chronology.

So the lists above are a clear guide to the six mainline games, not a definitive timeline for every Fallout title. In particular, the cited official timeline does not establish where to insert Fallout Tactics into a chronological playthrough.
