Android Auto suggestions come from different apps and features, so there is no single switch that fixes them all. First identify what is showing the suggestion—Waze, Google Maps, Google Assistant, message summaries, or an Android phone feature—then change the setting or behavior that matches it.
Identify where the suggestion comes from
Look at the screen and the app or feature attached to the item. A suggested route in Waze, a destination in Google Maps, an Assistant recommendation, and a spoken message summary are separate features with separate controls. If the item appears on your phone rather than the car display, it may be an Android-level suggestion instead of an Android Auto feature.

Turn off Waze trip suggestions
Waze’s trip suggestions can appear in Android Auto and are on by default, according to Waze Help. To disable them:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Waze on your phone.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Personalization > Trip suggestions.
- Turn off Show trip suggestions.
Choose the right Google Maps destination
Google Maps’ Android Auto destination picker separates Recent, Categories, and Saved. Recent destinations reflect places visited recently and recent searches; they are not the same as saved locations. To avoid a stale or incorrect suggestion, choose the intended place from Saved or search for the correct destination in the picker. Google says you must put the vehicle in Park to type a destination on the car display. See Google’s Android Auto navigation instructions.

Adjust personalized Assistant recommendations
If the item is an Assistant recommendation rather than a Maps or Waze destination, review the relevant Google personalization controls. Google says recommendations may use prior Assistant interactions and settings, Location History, Android app use, and activity in other Google products. Its Assistant Help says: “If you don’t want feature suggestions from Google Assistant on Android based on your Web and App activity, you can turn off Web & App Activity.”
Review Web & App Activity, personal-results notification settings, and Location History in your Google account and device settings. These controls can affect personalization beyond one Android Auto card; choose based on how much activity-based personalization you want, rather than expecting a single Android Auto suggestions switch.

Disable spoken message summaries separately
If the distracting item is a spoken summary of an incoming message, change the Message Summary setting in Android Auto or Google Assistant settings. This does not control route or destination suggestions. Google also cautions that AI-generated message summaries can contain mistakes. See Google’s Android Auto message-summary help.

When recommendations appear on the phone rather than the Android Auto display, Android’s separate Contextual Suggestions feature may be responsible. On supported devices, open Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions. Google documents controls there to switch the feature off, stop using device location for recommendations, and delete stored data. Google says this data is automatically deleted after 60 days. The labels and availability can vary by device; see Android Help.

Do not confuse Android Auto with Google built-in
Android Auto projects phone apps onto a compatible car display. Cars with Google built-in have Google services integrated into the vehicle and use different controls. For Google built-in cars, Google says Assistant Personal results can enable destination and media recommendations on the car display; the documented setting is Settings > Google > Google Assistant > Allow personal results. Availability and settings vary by manufacturer, region, and data plan. See Google Assistant Help for cars with Google built-in.
Quick troubleshooting guide
- Waze trip card: switch off Show trip suggestions in Waze.
- Google Maps destination: distinguish Recent from Saved and select or search for the intended place.
- Assistant recommendation: review activity, personal-results, and location settings, understanding that these have broader effects.
- Spoken message summary: turn off Message Summary.
- Phone-level app recommendation: check Contextual Suggestions in Google Play services.
Settings and labels can change across Android and app versions, phone manufacturers, regions, and vehicles. Google’s current Android Auto help also notes that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices, so the relevant control may appear under a different label on your phone.
