To search pages Safari has recorded on your Mac, open Safari and choose History > Show All History, then enter a term in the Search field. If you need the underlying records, Safari’s history database is a separate, more technical option: its location and schema can vary by profile and software version, and it should not be treated as a complete record of every browsing trace.
Search Safari history using the built-in interface
-
Open Safari on your Mac.
-
Choose History > Show All History.
-
Type a site name or other term in the Search field to find matching entries.

This is the supported starting point for an ordinary lookup. Apple says a Mac can keep browsing history for as long as a year; the removal interval can be changed in Safari settings. Apple’s Safari guide to viewing history describes the interface and retention setting.
How the history window differs from History.db
The History window is Safari’s user-facing search and display feature. The underlying database is a local SQLite file used by Safari; reading it directly may expose record-level fields, but requires navigating macOS storage and interpreting a version-sensitive schema.

Where Safari’s history database is located
A specialist macOS reference identifies the usual default-profile file as ~/Library/Safari/History.db. The tilde represents your home folder, and the Library folder is normally hidden in Finder. Additional Safari profiles may use separate files, reported at ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/Profiles/<UUID>/History.db for Safari 17 and later. The UUID is profile-specific, so the default path may not be the database for the profile you used.
These paths are implementation details documented by the specialist macOS forensic reference, not a public Apple guarantee. Paths may change; confirm the actual location on the Mac and Safari version in question rather than assuming one file covers every profile.
What the database may contain
The specialist reference describes History.db as a SQLite database with two central tables: history_items, which represents unique URLs, and history_visits, which represents individual page loads. It also describes fields relating to visit titles, successful loads, and redirects. This is a reported schema, not a contract that Apple promises to keep unchanged.

Apple’s deprecated WebKit WebHistory API provides a conceptual model of visited pages as WebHistoryItem objects that can be organized by day and loaded from or saved to a file URL. Because Apple marks that API deprecated, it should not be taken as documentation of the current Safari database schema. Apple’s WebHistory API documentation is useful context, not a current schema reference.
The specialist reference also mentions a history_tombstones table in connection with clearing history. Its presence or behavior does not guarantee that deleted visits can be recovered. A database row can show that a URL and visit record existed; on its own, it does not establish who used the Mac, why the page was opened, or what the person read. A missing entry does not prove the page was never viewed.
Inspect a copy, not the live database
Do not write to or experiment on Safari’s original history database. SQLite can use companion files, including -wal and -shm files. A write-ahead log may hold transaction information needed for a consistent database state, so copying only History.db while Safari is active may omit relevant data.

A terminal or database app may receive “Operation not permitted” when it tries to read Safari’s storage. The specialist reference reports that Safari’s directory and container may be protected by macOS privacy controls on Mojave and later, and that Full Disk Access may be needed for a live collection. This is not an Apple guarantee for every Mac or configuration.

What clearing, Private Browsing, and iCloud change
Clearing history
In Safari, choose History > Clear History and select the time range to remove. Apple says this removes visited-webpage history and related records such as recent searches, frequently visited sites, website icons, and snapshots. It also removes the downloaded-items list, but not the downloaded files themselves. See Apple’s instructions for clearing Safari history.
Private Browsing
Apple says Private Browsing details are not saved in Safari history and are not shared across devices. WebKit also documents that extensions with access to website data or browsing history are off by default in Safari Private Browsing. These protections concern Safari’s ordinary browsing records and extension access; they do not justify a broader claim that no trace can exist elsewhere on a device. See Apple’s Private Browsing guide and WebKit’s account of Private Browsing protections.
iCloud synchronization
If Safari is enabled for iCloud, Apple says Safari history and other Safari information can sync across devices. The local History.db file on one Mac therefore may not be the only place relevant history is available. Apple explains the setting in its iCloud Safari setup guidance.
