Super Mario 64 has been ported to the Microsoft Zune HD as a native homebrew project—not as a general Nintendo 64 emulator. The reported setup needs a Zune HD running firmware 4.5, a separate USA game ROM, and an x86-64 Linux computer with Docker and Git. Only firmware 4.5 is reported tested, and the published coverage does not provide a complete, verified install command sequence.
What you need before you start
- A Zune HD and its USB cable. Recent coverage identifies the HD model as the target. Firmware 4.5 is the only version reported tested; compatibility with other Zune models or firmware versions has not been established. Tom’s Hardware (2026) and LavX News (2026) describe the target and tested firmware.
- A legally obtained USA Super Mario 64 ROM. The port does not include the game data. Coverage says it expects the USA version. The upstream decompilation README lists SHA-1
9bef1128717f958171a4afac3ed78ee2bb4e86ceforsm64.us.z64; a matching checksum can help identify that specific ROM file, but does not establish how you obtained it or whether that use is lawful where you live. The upstream sm64 README lists the checksum and explains that an existing ROM is needed to extract assets. - A build computer running x86-64 Linux, with Docker, Git, at least 6 GB of free disk space, and internet access for the initial build. These are requirements reported by LavX News, not independently verified here. The outlet estimates an initial build at 5–10 minutes; actual time can vary with the machine and connection. How the reported setup works
The project adapts sm64ex for Zune HD hardware. It is a device-specific port, not software that turns the Zune into a general-purpose N64 emulator. The reported workflow is to build the project on the Linux computer and transfer the result to the Zune HD over USB. LavX News (2026).

What playing it is like
Reports describe on-screen touchscreen controls, sound, and save support. Performance is characterized as mostly or near full speed, with occasional slowdowns; there is no sourced official frame-rate figure. Limits to keep in mind
- Evidence supports the Zune HD target, not the original Zune or Zune 80/120.
- Firmware 4.5 is the only version reported tested; don’t assume another firmware release will work.
- The port is for Super Mario 64; the available sources do not establish support for other Nintendo 64 games.
