If your MacBook Pro battery is draining faster than expected, first check which apps are using significant energy, then try reversible power-saving settings. Review Battery Health and Maximum Capacity, update macOS, and retest with a similar workload. If the battery reports “Service Recommended” or the problem persists, consider service through an Apple-listed provider.
Check which apps and activities are using energy
Click the Battery status menu in the menu bar and look for apps marked as using significant energy. If you do not need an energy-intensive app, quit it. Apps can use power in the background even when they are not in the foreground. Apple’s quick-drain guidance recommends checking for apps with significant energy use.

Next, open System Settings > Battery and review the usage history available on your Mac. Depending on the model and macOS version, it may show battery level and screen-on usage for the last 24 hours, as well as energy and screen-on usage for the last 10 days. Use those charts to spot when discharge occurs; they are clues, not a diagnosis of a faulty component. Apple’s Battery settings guide describes the information and controls that may appear.

Try power-saving changes you can reverse
Turn on Low Power Mode
In System Settings > Battery, choose Low Power Mode if it is available. Apple says, “Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life.” The exact controls vary by Mac and macOS release. On macOS Ventura or later, the available energy modes may include Low Power Mode, Automatic, or High Power Mode for battery or power-adapter use. Reduce display and connection use
- Lower display brightness to a comfortable level.
- Set the display to turn off after a shorter period of inactivity.
- Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth only when you do not need the connection or a connected device.
Apple includes these adjustments among its suggestions for a Mac battery that runs out of charge more quickly than expected. Review Apple’s quick-drain suggestions if you want to check the current guidance.
Quit unused apps and disconnect accessories
Quit apps you are not using, especially those the Battery menu identifies as significant energy users. Disconnect accessories such as external drives when they are not needed. These steps may reduce usage-related drain, but they do not repair a battery whose condition has deteriorated.

Check Battery Health and charging controls
In System Settings > Battery, look for Battery Health and Maximum Capacity. Not every Mac displays the same options. Battery Health indicates whether the condition is normal or service is recommended; Maximum Capacity describes capacity relative to when the battery was new. Apple’s Battery settings guidance explains these indicators and the charging features available on supported Macs.

Optimized Battery Charging and charge limits are intended to support battery longevity. If your Mac is not charging to 100% at a particular moment, one of those settings may explain it; that behavior alone does not show that unplugged battery drain is abnormal.
Update macOS and compare under similar use
Apple recommends keeping macOS up to date as part of troubleshooting fast battery discharge. Check System Settings > General > Software Update for available updates, install one if offered, and then compare battery use under a similar workload to your usual one. Brightness, active apps, accessories, and connection needs can affect the comparison, so there is no single runtime figure that applies to every MacBook Pro.

Know when to arrange battery service
“Service Recommended” means the battery holds less charge than when it was new or is not functioning normally. Apple says you can continue using the Mac and may arrange service if the reduced capacity affects your experience. See Apple’s explanation of the “Service Recommended” status.
For a built-in Mac laptop battery replacement, Apple recommends an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or Independent Repair Provider that uses genuine Apple parts. Apple describes these options in its Mac service and repair guidance.
