Choose A Link to the Past for a classic dungeon-and-item journey
Nintendo presents A Link to the Past as a Super Nintendo adventure centered on saving Hyrule. Its dungeons and items—including the Hookshot, Pegasus Boots, and Master Sword—make it the natural first pick if you want the familiar rhythm of exploring, finding tools, and using them on the way forward.

Choose Majora’s Mask for its time loop and character stories
Majora’s Mask follows Ocarina of Time in the child timeline, but its distinctive appeal is the way it structures the adventure. Link relives the same three days and nights in Termina, learning about the people there while trying to prevent the moon’s destruction. Nintendo describes the recurring cycle as a way to explore the world and relate to its characters. Its Nintendo 64 manual explains that some masks change Link’s shape and grant abilities.

Pick this one first if the schedule, masks, and unsettling mystery are what draw you in. Nintendo’s description also notes that the world becomes less intimidating as Link gains knowledge—an important part of how the repeating cycle works.
Does Zelda timeline order decide which to play first?
No. Nintendo places A Link to the Past in the timeline branch where the hero is defeated, while Majora’s Mask follows Ocarina of Time in the child timeline. They occupy different branches, so timeline chronology does not require playing one before the other. Choose based on the experience you want.

Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 Nintendo Switch Online catalog article lists A Link to the Past in the Nintendo Switch Online catalog and Majora’s Mask under Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Availability depends on region, membership, and the current catalog; check the service in your region before subscribing for a specific game.
Check access before choosing
- Confirm your hardware and region, then check the current Nintendo Switch Online catalog and the tier required for the game you want.
- Do not rely on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases as a current option. Nintendo’s UK game pages state that purchases on those storefronts ended on March 27, 2023.
- If you are considering an original SNES or Nintendo 64 cartridge, treat it as a legacy item: check the listing’s condition and regional compatibility before buying.
The older Virtual Console editions appear on Nintendo’s regional game pages as historical releases, not as proof that those eShop storefronts still sell them.

Is either game better for beginners?
The available official descriptions establish differences in style and structure, not a difficulty ranking. They do not show that one is universally easier or more beginner-friendly. If you are new to Zelda, choose the format that sounds more inviting: 2D dungeons and items, or a 3D adventure organized around a repeating schedule and character routines.
