What “finish the campaign” means here
You only need the principal Ethan Winters storyline. You do not need to replay on a higher difficulty, collect every item or complete optional challenges. Avoid skipping cutscenes if your goal is story comprehension, because the character and plot context is delivered through the campaign rather than through a separate synopsis.
- Play the main Resident Evil 7 biohazard story.
- Keep the focus on Ethan, Mia, the Baker family and the Louisiana plantation.

How to play Resident Evil 7 today
Capcom originally released Resident Evil 7 biohazard on January 24, 2017, in North America and Europe, followed by Japan on January 26, 2017. The original release platforms were PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. It uses a first-person perspective; on PS4, the full game also supports optional PlayStation VR.
Choose the platform you already own

Can you play it on PS5?
Yes, PlayStation’s current listing includes both PS4 and PS5 Standard and Gold Editions. That gives PS5 owners a current PlayStation purchase route for the game. The VR qualification is separate: PlayStation notes that the VR features require PS4. If virtual reality is the reason you are buying, confirm that your hardware and the required PS4 setup are available before choosing an edition.
Which Resident Evil 7 version should you buy?
For a first viewing of the fan movie, the standard Resident Evil 7 biohazard campaign is enough. If you also want the officially released post-story chapters, choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition where it is offered. Gold Edition packages the adventure with previously released DLC.

Do not buy a DLC-focused package believing it replaces the campaign. The film’s premise depends on the main game’s character and setting setup, while the extras are designed as additional material around or after that story.
The right order for the DLC
Play the main campaign first. Then choose the downloadable chapters according to how much additional Baker-family context you want.

- Not a Hero: Play after Ethan’s fight. Its placement makes it a post-main-story chapter rather than preparation for the fan short.
- End of Zoe: Play after the main story when you want to explore the Baker family’s aftermath.
Both DLC chapters are optional for understanding the reported movie adaptation. Playing them before the campaign can introduce information that is meant to follow Ethan’s central story, so there is no benefit to using them as a substitute for the first playthrough.
Is the Beginning Hour demo enough?
No. PlayStation lists Beginning Hour as a free PS4 teaser demo. It can show you the game’s first-person presentation and survival-horror mood, but it is not the complete Ethan Winters campaign. A teaser cannot provide the full chain of character relationships, plantation exploration and conflict with Jack Baker that the fan short adapts.
Use the demo as a low-commitment check before purchase, not as your story preparation. If you have already played the full campaign, the demo is unnecessary for this purpose.

- Confirm your platform. Choose PS4, a current PS5 listing, Xbox One or Windows PC based on the hardware you own. Select PS4 only if the optional VR mode matters to you.
- Choose the edition. Buy Resident Evil 7 biohazard for the essential campaign. Select Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition if you also want the bundled DLC.
- Start a new campaign. Play in first-person mode and let the exploration and resource decisions establish the game’s survival-horror tone.
- Follow the story scenes. Keep track of Ethan, Mia, the Baker family and the plantation. These are the core references needed for the movie.
- Finish the main story before extras. Do not switch to Not a Hero or End of Zoe midway through the campaign.
- Watch the fan short afterward. Treat it as an unofficial adaptation of the game’s Ethan-and-Jack conflict, not as a replacement for the game.

The fan short’s reported focus on his struggle with Jack Baker gains more context when you know that the game frames survival as a series of constrained decisions.
What the fan-made movie is—and is not
GamesRadar reported on October 15, 2026, that Chandler Riggs’s BIOHAZARD is a “pulse-pounding 20-minute romp” adapting “Ethan Winter’s gruesome struggle with the terrifying Jack Baker.” The report also reproduced a reaction banner from Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi reading “Wow.”
That report does not establish Capcom authorship, licensing or official status. Treat the project as a fan production. A reaction from a person associated with the game is not the same as a studio announcement, an officially licensed film or a canonical continuation.

Why the film’s short running time matters
A roughly 20-minute adaptation has limited room to introduce the game’s complete mythology, side material and all of its locations. Playing the campaign first lets the movie concentrate on its chosen Ethan-and-Jack conflict without stopping to explain who Mia is, where the Bakers live or why the plantation matters. The game supplies that foundation; the short can then function as a compressed interpretation.
What you should remember before pressing play on the movie
- Ethan Winters: The protagonist whose search for his missing wife drives the campaign.
- Mia: Ethan’s missing wife and the reason he goes to the Louisiana plantation.
- The Baker family: The household at the center of the game’s immediate danger.
- Jack Baker: The antagonist named in the description of the fan short’s adaptation.
- The plantation: The primary setting that the game establishes through exploration and survival.

You do not need to memorize a chronology or read an external summary. Finishing the campaign with its story scenes intact supplies the relevant context more reliably than a teaser or a DLC-only playthrough.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Watching the movie after only the demo
The teaser is not the campaign. If you have played only Beginning Hour, you have sampled the presentation but not completed Ethan’s story. Continue with the full game before judging the adaptation.
Starting with the DLC
Not a Hero takes place after Ethan’s fight, and End of Zoe follows the Baker family’s aftermath. Starting with either chapter reverses the intended order and can expose you to post-story material before the main setup.
Assuming Gold Edition is mandatory
Gold Edition is convenient if you want the bundled DLC, but the essential purchase for this specific movie is the main Resident Evil 7 biohazard campaign. Choose Gold for breadth, not because the fan short requires every extra chapter.
Assuming a director reaction makes the film official
The reported “Wow” reaction is evidence that Koshi Nakanishi saw or reacted to the project, not evidence of Capcom ownership or licensing. Keep the distinction between an unofficial fan adaptation and an official production.
