Prepare while connected: update the launcher and game, run the game once, finish every first-run installer and license prompt, enable the store’s offline behavior, then disconnect networking and test. For long-term reinstalls, keep complete installer files—GOG’s offline backup installers are the clearest option—on an external drive with a second copy elsewhere. Steam and Epic can work offline for eligible titles, yet some games still depend on authentication, a third-party launcher, or online services.
What “offline play” really means
A storefront can deliver a game, but it does not determine whether that game will run without a network. The executable, its digital-rights management (DRM), first-run components, account checks, and online services determine the result. Two games bought from the same store can therefore behave differently: one may start indefinitely without a connection, while another may require periodic authentication or an additional launcher.

Recommended Free Tools
- Fully playable offline: the installed game starts and its single-player content works with networking disabled.
- Playable offline after preparation: the game needs a first launch, updates, redistributables, or a license check while you are online, then works without a connection.
- Launcher-dependent: the game can run offline only when its store client (or a third-party client) is installed and has a valid cached login.
- Online-dependent: multiplayer, a server-hosted campaign, cloud authentication, or another service is required, so no local preparation can make every feature available offline.
Offline mode also changes what you can do. Multiplayer matchmaking, cloud saves, friends lists, leaderboards, streaming features, and some achievement systems may stop working. Treat offline play as a tested capability of a specific title and version, not as a permanent promise attached to your purchase.

The preparation sequence that works across stores
Do this for every game you expect to use away from reliable internet. A single successful launch is not enough if the game later discovers an unfinished update or installer.
- Update the launcher first. Open Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the client you use and allow it to finish updating. Restart it if it asks.
- Update the game. Wait for downloads, file verification, and shader or component installation to complete. Do not begin the test while a download is paused.
- Launch the game while online. Reach the main menu, start a new game or load a save, and close it normally. This lets first-run setup complete while the required services are reachable.
- Finish every prerequisite. Accept license prompts and install any bundled runtime, DirectX component, Visual C++ package, anti-cheat component, or other first-run dependency that the game presents. If a separate launcher opens, sign in there and note its name.
- Confirm local saves. Create a test save and verify where the game stores it. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a local copy before you travel.
- Enable or confirm offline behavior. Use the store’s offline option where one exists. Some clients cache credentials only after an online launch.
- Disconnect deliberately. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use your operating system’s network controls. A quick test with the launcher still online can hide an authentication dependency.
- Run the game again. Start it from the same client or shortcut you will use while away. Load the test save and check the menus you actually need.
- Record the result. In a text file, write the store, game version, install location, required launchers, installer filenames, and the date of the successful offline test.
If the game fails at this stage, fix it before leaving. Do not assume that a title that worked last year will remain usable after an unattended update or a changed third-party service.
Steam: prepare each game and treat Backup as a convenience
Making Steam games ready for offline use
Steam’s offline capability is game-specific. While connected, launch every title you want to use, let updates and first-run installation requirements finish, and verify that the game reaches its playable menus. Then use Steam’s offline option and test again with networking disabled. Steam Support’s guidance is to launch the games you want to use offline and confirm that no further update or installation requirement remains.
If Steam reports that a game cannot be started in Offline Mode, the client or the game’s files need updating. Reconnect, allow the update or installation to complete, launch the title once more, and repeat the disconnected test. A game that invokes another publisher’s launcher or DRM can still require that software and a cached authentication even after Steam itself is ready.
What Steam Backup does—and does not do
Steam includes a Backup feature that can copy supported game data for restoration later. Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with it. Consequently, a Steam Backup or a copied Steam library is not a universal standalone installer. Keep notes about titles that install an additional client, perform a separate license check, or need an installer downloaded outside Steam.

For a long outage, preserve both the Steam backup and your local save files. If a title relies on a third-party launcher, retain that launcher’s installer and any account-recovery information you are permitted to keep. Test restoration on the same computer, or on a spare system, before you depend on the backup.
Epic Games Launcher: offline mode for eligible installed games
How Epic’s offline behavior works
Epic Games Launcher automatically enables Offline Mode when it starts without internet access or when the device loses connectivity. Epic describes the feature as allowing supported single-player games to run through the launcher without an internet connection. The game must already be installed and must support offline use; the launcher cannot download a missing game while disconnected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare by launching the installed title online, completing its first-run setup, and then closing the launcher. Disable networking and start the launcher again. Open the game and load a local save. If the title does not appear as playable, reconnect and check whether it has a pending update, an external launcher, or a service requirement.
Features that disappear offline
Epic notes that not all games support Offline Mode. For games that do, multiplayer and other online services are unavailable. Cloud saves, achievements, and similar account-backed functions may also be unavailable until the launcher reconnects. Before leaving, make a local save and copy it to your backup location rather than assuming that a cloud copy will be accessible.
GOG: the most straightforward installer-preservation workflow
Download the complete offline backup set
In your GOG library, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. Download every numbered installer part shown for the game, along with any patches or downloadable content you intend to preserve. A set is complete only when all parts are present; saving the first file alone will not produce a usable installer.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Store the files together in a clearly named folder that includes the game and version. Keep the original filenames and numbering. Copy the complete folder to an external hard drive or USB SSD, then make a second copy in a separate physical location. Installer sizes vary widely, so choose storage capacity based on your library rather than a fixed “typical” number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInstall without the GOG client
GOG Support explains that the game can be installed without the app by running the offline installer files. On a disconnected computer, open the folder, start the first installer part, and follow its prompts; the installer will use the remaining numbered parts in the same location. Apply preserved patches in their documented order, then launch the game directly or through the shortcut it creates.
GOG’s developer documentation says offline installers are generated after builds are published, and updated builds can take several hours to appear. If you are preserving a newly released update, check the library again later and download the revised installer set rather than assuming the first files are current.
What GOG’s policy covers
In a policy article published 17 Mar 2022, GOG states: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same article says, “Games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will,” and that “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” These are policy commitments concerning GOG’s single-player offline access, not a guarantee that multiplayer, cloud features, or third-party services will function without a network.
GOG’s developer documentation likewise distinguishes online-only features. Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, and similar services cannot be available while disconnected. Preserve the offline installer for the local game, and preserve local saves separately.

Comparison: Steam, Epic, and GOG for offline ownership
| Question | Steam | Epic Games Launcher | GOG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is there a standalone installer? | Not universally. Steam Backup can restore supported data, but many games using third-party installers or downloaders are excluded. | Not established as a general standalone-installer workflow; the game is normally installed through the launcher. | Yes. The library offers numbered offline backup installer files, with optional patches and DLC. |
| Is the launcher optional after installation? | Usually no for Steam-distributed titles; individual games can add another launcher or DRM. | No for the normal Epic workflow; the launcher starts supported offline games. | For single-player offline mode, GOG says the Galaxy client is optional. |
| Is eligibility title-specific? | Yes. Each game must be launched and verified before going offline. | Yes. Offline Mode is limited to supported, already-installed single-player games. | Single-player offline access is a stated policy requirement, while online-only features remain unavailable. |
| What disappears offline? | Any feature requiring a server, cloud synchronization, or an additional online launcher; the exact list varies by game. | Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable. | Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, cloud functions, and other online-only services cannot operate offline. |
| Can third-party DRM or launchers remain? | Yes; Steam’s own offline state does not remove another publisher’s requirement. | Yes; a game can invoke an external client or service. | Some titles can still include third-party components, so check the game’s requirements before relying on it. |
| How easy is a second backup? | Requires copying Steam backup data and any separate installers or launchers. | Requires preserving local game data plus any relevant launcher requirements; no general offline-installer set is stated. | Copying the complete installer folder to two drives is direct and repeatable. |
Build a durable installer and save archive
Use two physical copies
Keep one working copy on your computer or primary external drive and a second copy on a different drive stored elsewhere. A USB SSD is convenient for frequent transfers; a larger external hard drive can hold more games per unit of cost. Neither protects you if both copies stay in the same bag or fail in the same incident.
Organize by game and version
Use a folder structure such as Game title/Store/version. Put all numbered installer parts, patches, DLC files, readme files, and a plain-text manifest in that folder. The manifest should list the exact filenames, the store, the game version, the date downloaded, the required launcher, and the date of the last offline test.
Preserve saves independently
Find the game’s local save directory while online and copy it to the archive. Some games place saves in Documents, AppData, or the installation directory; the location is title-specific. Name each save backup with the game version and date. This protects progress when cloud synchronization is unavailable or when a clean reinstall overwrites local data.
Test restoration, not just copying
A file that copies successfully can still be incomplete. On a spare internal drive or another computer, disconnect networking, run the installer or restore the backup, and launch the game. For a multi-part GOG installer, keep every part in one folder during the test. For Steam or Epic, confirm that the client recognizes the restored files and does not demand an unexpected download.
Offline troubleshooting by symptom
“Cannot start in Offline Mode” on Steam
- Reconnect the computer and let Steam finish all client and game updates.
- Launch the game online until you reach its main menu, then exit normally.
- Check whether a third-party launcher opened; prepare and test that launcher separately.
- Choose Steam’s offline option, disconnect networking, and retry.
- If it still fails, record the title as requiring an online dependency rather than risking an untested trip.
Epic starts, but the game is unavailable
- Confirm that the game is fully installed and not waiting for a patch.
- Reconnect, launch it once, and close the launcher cleanly.
- Check the game’s support information for offline eligibility; Epic does not make every title available offline.
- Retry with networking disabled. If the game needs multiplayer servers, cloud data, or an external client, only its offline-capable portion can work.
A GOG installer reports a missing file
- Compare the folder with the library’s complete numbered-part list.
- Download the missing part again while connected and keep the original filename.
- Place every part in the same directory and start the first installer part.
- Apply patches only after the base installation succeeds, and keep DLC files with the same preserved version.
The game launches but saves or settings are missing
That usually indicates a different Windows user profile, a new installation path, or a cloud-only save workflow. Restore the local save backup to the game’s documented directory, start the game offline, and create a new test save. Do not delete the original archive until the restored save loads correctly.

How to choose a store when offline access matters
Choose the clearest preservation path
If your priority is reinstalling years later without depending on a client, GOG’s downloadable offline installer set is the most explicit workflow described here. You still need to check for third-party requirements and accept that online features will not work.
Choose convenience with preparation
Steam is practical when your library is already there and you can test each title. Its Backup feature can help, but the third-party-installer limitation means you should preserve exceptions individually.
Choose Epic only after a title test
Epic’s automatic Offline Mode is useful for supported installed single-player games. Because eligibility and feature loss vary, treat the disconnected launch test as mandatory rather than assuming every purchased title qualifies.
