The dependable way to play a PlayStation 5 game on a PC is Sony’s PS Remote Play. It streams a game from a PS5 that you own to a Windows PC or Mac; the console runs the game, while the computer displays the video and sends controller input. You need a PS5, a PlayStation account, a supported controller and a stable internet connection.

Native PS5 emulation is not yet a practical replacement. Projects such as KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 are genuine engineering efforts, but they remain experimental, have narrow or changing compatibility and can require legally obtained game files and substantial manual preparation.

What you can realistically do today

There are three very different ways people describe “playing PS5 games on PC”:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remote Play: the PS5 executes the game and sends a live stream to your computer. This is the reliable consumer method.
  • Direct emulation: software on the PC attempts to reproduce the PS5’s hardware and operating environment so the game runs locally. A mature, general-purpose PS5 emulator is not available.
  • Relinking or porting: a project adapts a particular PS5 executable for another operating system. This is game-specific experimentation, not a one-click way to use an entire PS5 library.

Remote Play does not convert a PC into a PS5. It also does not remove the need to own or access the console and the games. If you do not have a PS5, the official method is unavailable; the experimental projects described below are not dependable substitutes.

  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

PS Remote Play requirements

Windows computer baseline

Sony’s published Windows baseline, current in 2026, is:

Requirement Published baseline
Operating system Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11
Processor 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later
Memory 2 GB RAM
Storage At least 100 MB available space
Display 1024×768 resolution or higher
Audio Sound card
Ports USB port for the controller

These are app requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or latency. A newer computer may feel no better than an older one if the network is congested or unstable, because the PS5 is doing the rendering.

Mac support

The official PS Remote Play app is offered for Windows PC and Mac. The detailed baseline listed above is Sony’s Windows specification; the available guidance does not state equivalent Mac model or macOS-version requirements. Check the current app listing for your Mac before installing.

Console, account and controller

  • A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream games to another device; for this article’s subject, use a PS5 with the game installed or available to your account.
  • The PS5 must be running current system software.
  • Sign in on the computer with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  • Sony supports DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers. Sony’s PC instructions specify connecting the controller by USB, making a USB-connected DualSense the most direct setup.

Internet connection

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2026 guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 15 Mbps as the recommended connection speed. Those figures describe throughput, not a guaranteed gaming experience. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion and the upload path from the console can still cause delay, blocky video or disconnections. A faster, stable connection can reduce interruptions, but Sony does not promise a fixed latency, frame rate or image quality from the bandwidth number alone.

How to set up PS Remote Play on a PS5 and PC

Follow this order so the console is ready before the computer app tries to connect.

  1. Install the official app. Download and install PS Remote Play for Windows or Mac from Sony’s current PlayStation software page.
  2. Enable Remote Play on the console. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play, then turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. Configure Rest Mode wake-up, if wanted. To start the PS5 remotely while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Without these settings, you may need to turn the console on manually.
  4. Prepare the controller. Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 to the computer with a USB cable. A cable that carries data, rather than power only, is required for the app to see the controller.
  5. Sign in. Launch PS Remote Play and sign in with the same PlayStation account that is active on the PS5.
  6. Select the PS5. Choose the PS5 shown in the app. The software will search for the console and establish the stream.
  7. Start the game on the streamed screen. Once the PS5 interface appears, select the installed game as you would with a television. The game continues to run on the console even though its picture is displayed on the computer.

If automatic discovery fails, confirm that Remote Play is enabled, the console is powered on or configured for network wake-up, both devices have internet access and the same account is being used. Rechecking those four conditions addresses the most common setup errors without changing game files or installing unofficial software.

What performance to expect

Responsiveness

Every button press travels from the controller to the computer, across the network to the PS5, and back as part of the video stream. The resulting delay depends on the complete route, not just the advertised internet speed. A connection that meets 15 Mbps can still feel sluggish if it has high latency or intermittent packet loss.

Image stability

Remote Play adjusts to changing network conditions. Congestion may produce softer video, visible compression or a temporary pause while the stream recovers. These are streaming effects rather than evidence that the PC lacks graphics power. Closing competing high-bandwidth activity and using the most stable connection available can help, but the experience will vary by home network and internet provider.

PC hardware versus console hardware

Because the PS5 performs the game execution, upgrading a PC’s graphics card does not turn a Remote Play session into native PC rendering. The computer still needs to meet the app baseline, decode the stream and handle the controller, but it does not replace the console’s CPU or GPU.

Games and peripherals that Remote Play cannot cover

Remote Play is not universal. Games that require PlayStation VR2, PlayStation VR or PlayStation Camera peripherals are not compatible with Remote Play. A computer display and a standard controller cannot reproduce those hardware-dependent experiences.

For ordinary controller-based PS5 games, the practical question is network quality and account access. For a title that depends on one of the excluded peripherals, there is no Remote Play setting that removes the restriction; the required PlayStation hardware must be used directly with the console.

Is there a working PS5 emulator?

There is no mature, plug-and-play PS5 emulator that reliably runs current commercial releases across a broad library. The projects below demonstrate progress, but their own descriptions and independent reporting place them firmly in the experimental category.

KytyPS5

KytyPS5 describes itself as a free, open-source emulator for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its status information says the software is early-stage and has limited compatibility. It can boot some 2D games and a selection of 3D games, but users should expect crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance.

That means a successful boot is not the same as a playable game. A title may reach a menu, fail during loading, render incorrectly or run too slowly for practical use. Compatibility can change between builds, so consult the project’s current compatibility list and release notes before attempting a specific game.

AnyPS5

AnyPS5 takes a different route. Its repository presents a tool for automatically porting PS5 executables to Linux and Windows. It is better understood as a compatibility or relinking project with game-specific preparation than as an emulator that accepts an arbitrary PS5 disc or digital library.

Tom’s Hardware reported in September 2026 that the project draws on the PS5’s x86-64 lineage and uses Vulkan shader translation. Those techniques are technically significant, but the report also emphasized that practical PS5 emulation remains far from complete. Results depend on the individual title, the project version and the files supplied by the user.

Why these projects are not replacements for Remote Play

Question Experimental projects Remote Play
Does the game run on the PC? They attempt local emulation or a native-style relink, depending on the project. No. The PS5 runs the game and streams it.
Will an arbitrary PS5 game work? No. Compatibility is limited, title-specific and changing. Compatible controller-based games available on the connected PS5 are the intended use.
Is a PS5 required? The projects do not state a console requirement, but they require legally obtained game or system files and project-specific preparation. Yes, Sony requires a PS4 or PS5 console for streaming.
How predictable is setup? Expect troubleshooting, crashes, visual errors and performance problems. Install the official app, enable the console setting, sign in and connect a supported controller.

Legal and file-sourcing boundaries

KytyPS5 states that it is not affiliated with Sony and does not distribute games or copyrighted system software. It expects users to provide legally obtained game files. That project statement is not a universal legal opinion.

Rules for dumping a game, extracting system software, decrypting files, circumventing technical protection and keeping personal backups differ by country. A method that is permitted in one jurisdiction may be restricted in another. If you are considering an emulator or relinking tool, obtain local legal advice about the specific files and process rather than assuming that ownership of a disc or console automatically permits every form of copying or decryption.

Do not download commercial game images or system software from unofficial file-sharing sites. Apart from legal risk, such files can be modified, incomplete or bundled with malware.

Choosing the right method

Choose Remote Play when

  • You own or can access a PS5 and want the broadest dependable access to its controller-based games.
  • You prefer an official workflow with a documented app and straightforward account setup.
  • You can provide at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended, and a stable route between the console and computer.
  • You accept streaming latency and do not need VR2, VR or Camera-dependent titles.

Consider experimentation only when

  • You understand that KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 are active projects rather than finished products.
  • You are comfortable checking compatibility lists, release notes and title-specific instructions for every build.
  • You can legally obtain and use the required game and system files in your jurisdiction.
  • You are prepared for crashes, graphical glitches, poor performance and the possibility that a particular game will not boot at all.

Troubleshooting checklist

The app cannot find the PS5

  1. On the console, verify Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play is on.
  2. Confirm that the app and console use the same PlayStation account.
  3. Make sure the PS5 is powered on, or that both Rest Mode network options are enabled if you are trying to wake it remotely.
  4. Check that the console and computer can reach the internet and retry the search.

The controller does not respond

Use a supported DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 and connect it to the computer by USB, as Sony’s PC instructions specify. Try a different data-capable USB cable if the controller charges but is not detected.

The stream is blurry or delayed

Check the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, then look for congestion or instability rather than immediately replacing PC hardware. A higher nominal speed cannot guarantee low latency or a fixed frame rate.

A game refuses to work

If it requires PlayStation VR2, PlayStation VR or PlayStation Camera, Remote Play does not support it. If you are testing KytyPS5 or AnyPS5, check the project’s current compatibility information and release notes; a failure may reflect an unsupported title or a build limitation rather than an incorrect installation.

Bottom line

For most people, PS Remote Play is the only dependable way to play PS5 games on a PC: the console remains essential, the computer acts as the screen and control endpoint, and network quality determines how responsive the session feels. PS5 emulation and relinking research is advancing, but limited compatibility, unstable performance, changing requirements and legal file-sourcing questions make those projects unsuitable as a general replacement for a PS5.
