NYT Connections presents 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Select a complete group, submit it, and continue until all four groups are solved or you make four mistakes. Yellow, green, blue, and purple indicate the setter’s intended difficulty order; they do not identify a fixed kind of connection. The objective that can be verified is to finish the board while avoiding mistakes, not to chase an officially documented point total.
What you are solving
Connections is a word-association puzzle built as a four-by-four sorting problem. Every puzzle starts with 16 entries. Your job is to partition those entries into four sets containing exactly four words each, with one shared relationship connecting the members of each set.

The relationship can be obvious or indirect. A group might consist of words linked by a common meaning, a familiar phrase, a name pattern, or another relationship recognized by the puzzle setter. The essential test is not whether two words seem related; all four words must fit the same explanation.

That description explains why the puzzle can feel harder than a normal trivia question. You are not looking for four isolated answers. You are trying to find four non-overlapping categories at the same time.

The complete game loop
1. Read the entire 16-word board
Start by scanning every entry instead of committing to the first pair that catches your eye. Look for words that appear to share a meaning, finish the same phrase, belong to the same recognizable set, or work in the same grammatical role.
At this stage, treat every idea as a hypothesis. Two words can be connected in several ways, and a convincing pair may be deliberately placed to distract you from the intended four-word group.
2. Build a four-word theory
Before submitting, name the connection in your own words and test it against four entries. A valid theory should answer both questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Why do all four selected words belong together?
- Why do the remaining words not belong to that category?
If you can explain only two or three of the words, keep investigating. Connections rewards a complete classification, not a partial match.
3. Select exactly four words and submit
The standard format requires one proposed group of four at a time. Select four entries on the board and use the submission control. If the set is correct, the group is removed and its category label is revealed.
The removal is useful information. It reduces the board to the unsolved words and confirms the setter’s intended interpretation of that category. If the set is wrong, the words stay on the board and the puzzle records a mistake.
4. Repeat with the remaining entries
After a correct submission, re-read the reduced board from the beginning. A word that looked like a natural fit before may now belong elsewhere, and the remaining entries may reveal a connection that was hidden by the original clutter.

Continue submitting groups of four until the board is empty or the mistake limit is reached.
5. Know how the puzzle ends
You can make up to four mistakes. Once the fourth mistake is used, the game ends and the answers are revealed. A correct group therefore does more than advance the puzzle: it preserves one of your limited opportunities for testing an uncertain idea.
What the four colors mean
Each solved group is assigned a color that signals the intended difficulty of that category. The order is consistent across the sources that describe the format:
| Color | Intended difficulty | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Easiest | Usually the most immediately recognizable relationship for the puzzle’s intended audience. |
| Green | More difficult than yellow | Often requires more checking or a less direct association. |
| Blue | More difficult than green | Typically needs closer comparison among plausible candidates. |
| Purple | Trickiest | Intended to be the most difficult group to identify. |
These colors describe the setter’s intended difficulty, not a promise about your personal experience. A category marked purple may be obvious to someone familiar with its subject, while a yellow group can be difficult if its words have strong alternative meanings.

Purple should not automatically be treated as wordplay, yellow should not automatically be treated as a literal category, and the colors should not be used as a substitute for testing all four words.
How mistakes and the four-attempt limit work
A mistake is a submitted group that is not one of the intended groups
The format gives you four mistakes before the answers are shown. The practical consequence is that an uncertain submission has a cost even when three of its words eventually turn out to be useful elsewhere.
There is no advantage in submitting a group simply because it is the best idea you have at that instant. Use the board to improve the theory first. If a candidate group has only three strong members and one questionable member, search for a fourth word that makes the connection precise or reconsider the category entirely.

Reserve attempts for high-confidence tests
A useful discipline is to classify possible groups mentally as strong, plausible, or weak. Submit strong groups first. Keep plausible groups visible while you inspect the remaining words, and avoid spending an attempt on a weak idea unless no stronger explanation survives.
This is not a separate scoring rule; it is a solving method that protects the resource the puzzle explicitly limits.
Use a correct removal as evidence
When a group disappears and its category is named, treat that result as a constraint on the rest of the puzzle. The solved category tells you which interpretation the setter intended for those four words. Re-evaluate any remaining word that you had assigned mentally to that category and look for a second meaning that fits one of the unsolved groups.
What “scoring” means in Connections
The verified objective
The format establishes two measurable outcomes: whether you solve all four groups and whether you do so before using four mistakes. Finishing the board with fewer wrong submissions is the clearest way to describe a stronger solve under the documented rules.
No verified official point formula
The accessible descriptions do not document an official numerical point system, point values for solving a group in a particular order, or a formula that converts mistakes and completion into a score. Do not assume that yellow is worth fewer points than purple, that a faster solve earns a published bonus, or that a specific number represents an official NYT score.
Some players may use personal records, streaks, emojis, or community conventions to describe their results. Those conventions are not established here as an official numerical scoring system. If you report a result, the most defensible wording is to state whether you solved the puzzle and how many mistakes you made.
Why the distinction matters
Calling the color order a point scale creates a false incentive to delay an easy group in search of a harder one. The colors communicate intended difficulty, while the rules limit mistakes. Solve the board accurately rather than trying to optimize an undocumented score.

A reliable solving method
Scan for the most literal relationship first
Look for entries that share an unmistakable category or definition. A literal group is often easier to verify than an abstract one, so it can reduce the board and expose the harder connections.
Do not force a literal interpretation if one word fits only by stretching its meaning. The strongest category is the one that explains all four entries with the fewest exceptions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Separate a category from a mere association
A mere association is a link you can describe between two words. A category is a rule that applies equally to four words. For example, “these two are both related to travel” is too broad to be useful; a specific, repeatable relationship that covers four entries is a stronger candidate.
Ask whether another word on the board could satisfy the same description. If several additional entries fit, the category may be too broad or may be a decoy designed to overlap with the intended answer.
Check the fourth word before submitting
Many errors happen because a solver finds three excellent matches and treats the fourth as an afterthought. Make the fourth word do the same work as the first three. If the explanation changes when you reach that word, stop and revise the theory.
Look for decoys and overlapping meanings
The board can contain words that appear to belong to more than one possible group. This is why pair-finding is not enough. When two categories compete for the same entry, compare the complete four-word explanations and choose the arrangement that leaves a clean, defensible set of four for every remaining category.
Use elimination only after establishing a real group
Once one correct group has been removed, the remaining board is smaller and elimination becomes safer. Before that point, “the last four words” may simply be the leftovers from an incorrect earlier assumption.
Best Value
Elimination is strongest when the first group was confirmed by a precise connection and the remaining words form a similarly coherent set. It is weak when it merely means that four entries have not yet been assigned.
Re-read words after each success
A word’s surface meaning can dominate your first impression. After a group is removed, deliberately inspect every remaining entry for a secondary meaning, alternate pronunciation, phrase use, or different grammatical role. The puzzle’s difficulty often comes from making a word serve as a decoy for one category while belonging to another.
When you are stuck, change the question
Instead of asking “What do these two words have in common?”, ask:
- Which four entries could share one precise description?
- Which word is creating the strongest overlap between two candidate groups?
- What category would become possible if that overlapping word were moved?
- Can I explain why each remaining word is excluded from the group I want to submit?
These questions shift the task from free association to classification, which is the structure described in the 2025 computational-linguistics analysis of the game.
A safe way to test a candidate group
- Write the category in one short sentence. If the description needs several unrelated exceptions, it is probably not precise enough.
- Name all four entries. Do not submit a pair or a trio with an implied fourth word.
- Check the weakest member. Explain why it belongs without relying on a different definition from the other three.
- Inspect the leftovers. Make sure the proposed group does not consume a word that is essential to a stronger category.
- Submit only when the explanation is stable. A wrong submission uses one of four available mistakes.
What happens after a correct submission
A correct group is removed from the board and its category is revealed. That immediate feedback serves three purposes:
- It confirms the intended connection for the four selected words.
- It reduces the number of unsolved entries.
- It gives you a constraint for evaluating the remaining hypotheses.
The category label is not merely a congratulatory message. Read it carefully. It can reveal the exact scope of the relationship and help distinguish the remaining words from the four that have already been classified.
How third-party versions can differ
Melio Games describes the general 16-word, four-groups-of-four format and notes that versions outside the NYT puzzle do not necessarily share the NYT’s daily puzzle. A clone or independently published word-association game may use a different board, schedule, interface, mistake rule, or result display.
Recommended Free Tools
This guide therefore applies to the NYT Connections format described by the available accounts: 16 entries, four groups of four, one submitted group at a time, a color order from yellow through purple, and a four-mistake limit. Do not assume that another game using the word “Connections” follows every one of those rules.
What is and is not officially established
The official NYT game page could not be accessed for direct verification in the available material. The rules above are supported by corroborating descriptions from TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 daily guide and Melio Games, along with the broad classification framing in the 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics paper.
Those sources support the board size, group size, submission behavior, color difficulty order, and mistake limit. They do not verify an official numerical score, a universal meaning for each color beyond difficulty, or every current interface label. If the game’s presentation changes, follow the controls and wording shown in the current NYT interface while retaining the core classification method.
