How to Play MTS Files on a TV: Check Compatibility and Choose a Playback Method

An MTS extension does not guarantee TV playback. Check your model’s supported codecs, preserve AVCHD folders, and choose a playback route before converting.

You can play an MTS video directly on a TV only if that TV supports the file’s format and encoding. Check the exact model’s manual before copying files, converting video, or buying equipment: support differs by model, and the .mts extension alone does not guarantee playback.

Why an MTS file may or may not play

MTS is commonly associated with AVCHD camcorder video, but a TV’s ability to play it depends on more than the filename extension. The TV may need to support the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, and other limits. Manufacturer compatibility tables differ: Sony’s 2011 guidance marks .mts/.m2ts AVCHD unsupported for the TV models it covers, while other Sony TV and player documentation lists AVCHD or MTS support for particular products. Those examples apply to their named models, not all TVs or product generations.

Start with the TV’s complete model number and consult its official manual or support page. Check the USB video-format list and any codec or resolution restrictions. Panasonic’s manual for one model family, for example, lists AVCHD .mts with H.264 video and Dolby Digital audio; that is a specification for that product context, not a universal MTS requirement. Sony’s TV format guidance and Panasonic’s AVCHD guidance illustrate why model-specific checking matters.

Try these playback methods in order

1. Connect the camcorder to the TV

If the TV manual lists camera or camcorder playback, connect the device using a supported connection and select the TV’s media viewer or input. Sony’s BRAVIA connectivity guide describes connecting a camera or camcorder to a TV USB port and browsing its media. Menus vary: one Sony manual, for example, uses Home, then Photos/Music/Videos, then the USB device. Use the instructions for your own TV rather than assuming those labels apply.

Back up the camera files before changing storage settings or formatting a card. Sony’s BRAVIA Connectivity Guide notes that playback may fail even for supported formats, so a listed format is not a guarantee for every file.

2. Try USB storage, keeping the AVCHD folders intact

If the TV manual explicitly supports AVCHD or MTS playback from USB, copy the camera-created AVCHD directory to USB storage and connect it to the TV. Do not copy only the visible .MTS clip if you can preserve the complete folder hierarchy. Sony documents paths such as /AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS; Panasonic warns that changing the folder structure can prevent playback. Philips also says some of its players require an AVCHD-compliant file and folder structure rather than a standalone MTS or M2TS clip.

Navigate to the USB device through the TV’s media or video menu; the exact path depends on the model. A USB drive is only a way to carry the files: it cannot make an unsupported codec or format playable. Sony’s USB format guidance, Panasonic’s AVCHD guidance, and Philips’ MTS/M2TS guidance describe product-specific requirements.

3. Use a compatible external media player

If the TV does not support MTS/AVCHD directly, an external Blu-ray or network media player may be an option. Check that exact player’s official manual for MTS, M2TS, or AVCHD support over the connection you plan to use, such as USB. Sony’s 2025 player support table lists transport-stream MTS/M2TS and AVCHD-folder support for relevant compatible player products; this does not mean every player supports them. Philips’ folder-structure requirements are another reminder that compatibility can depend on the model and how the clip is stored. Sony’s player support table and Philips’ guidance provide examples.

4. Convert only if the other routes do not work

Conversion can create a copy in a format your TV supports, but there is no universally reliable “convert to MP4” setting. Before converting, check the TV manual for accepted container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, and frame-rate limits. Keep an untouched backup of the original and test a short copy first. The appropriate output depends on the destination TV’s specifications.

Troubleshoot a file the TV recognizes but will not play

  • Confirm the exact model’s limits. Check its official manual for the file container, video and audio codecs, resolution, and USB playback requirements.
  • Preserve the camera’s AVCHD hierarchy. If you copied only one MTS clip, try again with the full camera-created directory.
  • Check for a video or audio mismatch. A TV may recognize the file but fail to decode its video or audio stream. Compare the file details with the model’s supported-codec list.
  • Test another documented route. Try the camcorder connection or a verified compatible player rather than assuming the USB path is the only option.
  • Protect the original. Keep a backup before moving files, changing storage, or converting; test any conversion on a short copy.

Manufacturer documentation warns that even files in a listed format may not play, so failure does not necessarily mean the extension is wrong. The next useful checks are the exact model’s codec requirements and whether the original AVCHD folder structure was preserved.
