M. Bison wins in Street Fighter 6 by turning one clean approach into a repeating pressure sequence. Use strong normals, Double Knee Press, and Drive Rush to reach the opponent, confirm into Backfist Combo, attach a Psycho Mine, then detonate it to gain enough frame advantage for another throw, low, overhead, shimmy, or frame trap. The character is at his best when the opponent must keep guessing while a mine makes every blocked or interrupted exchange dangerous.
This guide teaches the controls, safe ways to start the offense, practical beginner combos, mine detonations, corner sequences, Drive Rush choices, meter decisions, and the defensive discipline needed when Bison loses momentum.

Bison’s win condition: approach, plant, detonate, repeat
Bison is a pressure-and-setplay character rather than a character who wants to trade random hits forever. His neutral tools let him contest space and advance. Once a light or medium confirm reaches Backfist Combo, the follow-up can attach a Psycho Mine. The mine changes the opponent’s next defensive decision: Bison can detonate it with another Backfist Combo, Psycho Crusher Attack, or Devil Reverse, creating a large advantage and often extending the combo.
Recommended Free Tools
The practical loop is:
- Take space with standing medium punch, standing heavy punch, standing heavy kick, crouching medium punch, or Double Knee Press.
- Confirm a hit into a mine-planting Backfist Combo instead of committing to an unsafe raw special.
- Force the defender to block, challenge, jump, or spend a defensive resource while the mine is active.
- Detonate the mine when the route gives the best advantage, damage, or corner position.
- Use the resulting turn for a meaty normal, Drive Rush mix-up, throw, shimmy, or frame trap.
The strongest Bison turns are not just high-damage combos. They are sequences that leave you close enough to make the opponent defend another layered choice.

Notation and special-move controls
The notation below follows the SF6 Lab convention. Numbers describe the direction on a numeric keypad: 4 is back, 6 is forward, 2 is down, and 8 is up. P means punch and K means kick; L, M, and H mean light, medium, and heavy. OD means Overdrive.
| Move | Notation | What it does in Bison’s plan |
|---|---|---|
| Psycho Crusher Attack | [4]6P |
A forward-moving special; its OD version can answer fireballs and can detonate a mine. |
| Double Knee Press | 236K |
A pressure and approach special. It is a quarter-circle motion in SF6, not a charge motion. |
| Backfist Combo | 214P |
Bison’s main mine-planting and mine-detonating special. |
| Shadow Rise | [2]8K |
Launches Bison into his aerial follow-ups. |
| Head Press | K during Shadow Rise |
A Shadow Rise follow-up that can participate in a mine-detonation combo. |
| Devil Reverse | P during Shadow Rise |
A Shadow Rise follow-up that can detonate a mine and preserve pressure. |
| Super Art 1 | 236236K |
Level 1 Super Art. |
| Super Art 2 | 214214K |
Level 2 Super Art. |
| Super Art 3 | 236236P |
Level 3 Super Art; used in the documented mine-detonation route. |
For charge-style notation such as [4]6P, hold back before pressing forward and punch. Double Knee Press does not require holding a charge first, which makes it easier to use while walking forward or confirming from a normal.
Neutral: how to get close without giving away your turn
Use normals to make the opponent respect the ground
Standing medium punch is a dependable mid-range check, while crouching medium punch gives you a low-profile way to contest the approach. Standing heavy punch and standing heavy kick reach farther and make the opponent hesitate before walking forward. These buttons are most useful when they are spaced so that a whiff can be recovered safely and a hit can be confirmed into a special or Drive Rush.

Pick the normal that matches the distance: standing medium punch and crouching medium punch for routine checks, standing heavy punch or standing heavy kick when the opponent is walking into your preferred range, and a low light normal when you need a fast confirm.
Double Knee Press is your advancing threat
Double Knee Press lets Bison challenge space while moving toward the opponent. The frame reference lists the light, medium, and heavy versions at approximately -5, -5, and -4 frames on block. That means the special is not automatically your turn when blocked; use it at a distance, cancel it from a normal, or vary the timing so the opponent cannot punish a predictable point-blank version.
On hit, Double Knee Press can carry Bison into a mine route or a Drive Rush conversion. Treat it as a way to claim ground and force a reaction, not as permission to repeat the same blocked special.
Psycho Crusher and fireball checks
OD Psycho Crusher is specifically useful against fireballs. Save the Overdrive version for a read that matters rather than spending it every time you want to move forward. A successful OD Psycho Crusher can also detonate an attached mine, so the same resource can answer a projectile and continue the setplay.

Unmodified Backfist Combo versions are listed at roughly -14 to -15 frames on block. That is a substantial punish risk if the opponent blocks it at close range. Enter it from a confirmed light or medium sequence, use it when the mine route is intentional, or cancel into it only when spacing and the matchup make the risk acceptable.

A beginner game plan in five decisions
- Establish your range. Start with standing medium punch, crouching medium punch, standing heavy punch, standing heavy kick, and carefully spaced Double Knee Press. Watch whether the opponent blocks, presses, jumps, or backs away before choosing the next approach.
- Confirm before planting. From a light hit, use
cr.LP or cr.LK > st.LK > L Backfist Combo. From a medium opening, usest.MP > cr.MP > M Backfist Combo. Both routes attach a mine and leave Bison close enough to continue pressure. - Make the mine matter. Once the mine is attached, do not immediately perform the same follow-up every time. Walk, delay, throw, use a normal, or wait for the opponent to reveal whether they are trying to mash, jump, or block.
- Choose a detonation. Backfist Combo is the straightforward option, Psycho Crusher Attack gives a different approach angle, and Devil Reverse can preserve an aerial route. The correct choice depends on whether you value frame advantage, damage, corner position, or meter.
- Spend the new turn deliberately. In the corner, a heavy Backfist detonation can leave enough advantage for a meaty 4HK. In the open, Drive Rush can turn the advantage into a low, medium, overhead, throw, shimmy, or frame trap.
When the opponent blocks the initial approach, return to spacing rather than forcing a mine route from an unsafe special. Bison’s offense becomes stronger when the defender believes every opening is earned by a confirm.
Starter combos and what each route is for
Learn one route from each category before adding difficult extensions. The frame advantages are the values documented for the cited SF6 Lab pages and can change with balance updates.
| Situation | Combo | Result and use |
|---|---|---|
| Light confirm | cr.LK > cr.LP > st.LP > L Psycho Crusher Attack |
Reliable grounded conversion; the guide records roughly +24 frames or more after a grounded hit. |
| Light mine route | cr.LP or cr.LK > st.LK > L Backfist Combo |
Attaches a Psycho Mine and leaves approximately +21 frames in the documented version. |
| Medium mine route | st.MP > cr.MP > OD Double Knee Press > H Backfist Combo |
Uses Overdrive to attach a mine and gives about +31 frames, making it a strong pressure starter. |
| Standing heavy punch confirm | st.HP > st.LP > L Psycho Crusher Attack or st.HP > st.LP > L Backfist Combo |
In the 2026-08-03 version, standing heavy punch is +5 on hit and +1 on block, so it can confirm or maintain close pressure. |
| Punish counter | st.HK PC > forward dash > cr.HP > OD Double Knee Press > 6HP > L Psycho Crusher Attack |
Converts a heavy punish counter into damage and forward momentum. |
| Drive Impact wall splat | DI wall splat > st.MP・6HP TC > L Backfist Combo |
Simple wall-splat ender that preserves the mine plan. |
| Drive Impact wall splat extension | DI wall splat > cr.HP > OD Double Knee Press > 6HP > M Backfist Combo |
Spends Overdrive for a larger extension and a different mine setup. |
| Mine detonation and Super Art | cr.MP > OD Psycho Crusher Attack (mine detonation) > Shadow Rise > OD Head Press > 6HP > L Psycho Crusher Attack > SA3 |
A resource-heavy route that converts a medium opening and an active mine into a Level 3 finish. |
How to practice the light routes
Record the dummy blocking at random and practice confirming only when the first light connects. If the light is blocked, stop before Backfist Combo. This single habit prevents the most common beginner error: turning a safe check into a punishable raw special.

How to practice the medium route
Drill the timing from standing medium punch to crouching medium punch first. Add OD Double Knee Press only after the two normals are consistent, then finish with heavy Backfist Combo. The goal is not merely to memorize the sequence; it is to recognize the medium hit during a real neutral exchange.
Psycho Mine mechanics
Attaching the mine
Backfist Combo is the central mine-planting move. The light confirm route and the medium route above both end in Backfist Combo, so you can attach the mine without giving up the combo. Once attached, the mine creates a delayed threat that changes how the opponent can challenge your next approach.
Ways to detonate it
| Detonator | Documented advantage | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| L or M Backfist Combo | About +42 frames | Default grounded detonation when you want a large, repeatable turn. |
| H Backfist Combo | About +49 frames | Corner pressure and meaty setups when the spacing allows it. |
| OD Psycho Crusher Attack | About +82 frames | High-value conversion, especially when answering a fireball or extending a combo. |
| Devil Reverse | About +53 frames | Aerial variation that changes the defender’s anti-air and blocking timing. |
The current SF6 Lab page lists automatic Psycho Mine detonation at 500 damage. An Overdrive Backfist Combo with a mine is listed at 1,800 damage. Those figures are page-specific values, not a promise that every route will deal the same damage: scaling, starter, combo length, and resource use still matter.
Choosing the detonation
Use L or M Backfist when you need a dependable grounded advantage and want to preserve meter. Choose H Backfist when the corner position makes the extra advantage immediately useful. OD Psycho Crusher is the largest documented advantage, but it costs Drive gauge and should be reserved for a conversion that meaningfully improves damage, positioning, or the matchup situation. Devil Reverse is valuable when a grounded repeat would be predictable or when the opponent is already looking for a low block.
Corner pressure after H Backfist Combo
The corner is where Bison’s mine advantage becomes easiest to convert into a structured guessing game. The guide records about +31 frames after H Backfist Combo in the corner. That is enough time to move forward and establish a meaty attack rather than simply pressing the fastest button.

Meaty normal
After the documented corner H Backfist advantage, a forward dash into a meaty 4HK is a practical option. A meaty normal catches wake-up buttons and makes the opponent block immediately, giving you another chance to threaten throw or a frame trap. Practice the dash timing against a recording that alternates between wake-up block and wake-up button.
Drive Rush mix-up
Drive Rush lets Bison convert the advantage into several different timings:
- Low: Drive Rush crouching light kick keeps the defender honest and can continue a light confirm.
- Medium: Drive Rush standing medium punch is a stronger frame-trap and hit-confirm button.
- Overhead: Use the overhead only after the opponent has shown a strong low-blocking habit; predictable overheads are easy to react to or challenge.
- Throw: The direct answer to a defender who blocks without teching.
- Shimmy: Walk out of throw range, make the opponent whiff a throw, and punish the recovery.
- Delayed button: A slight pause catches mashing while still protecting the mine-related advantage.
The documented Drive Rush figures are +8 on hit for Drive Rush crouching light kick and +10 on hit for Drive Rush standing medium punch. Use those hit advantages to decide whether to continue a combo, reset pressure, or take a throw before the opponent can recover.
How to select a route: damage, meter, position, and execution
There is no single best combo for every opening. Compare a route on five questions:
- Damage: Does the route cash out immediately, or does it sacrifice damage to plant a mine?
- Meter: Does it spend Drive gauge or Overdrive stocks, and will that leave enough resource for defense?
- Mine status: Does the ender attach a mine, detonate an existing one, or leave no setplay?
- Frame advantage: How much time do you have to establish the next attack?
- Screen position: Does the route carry toward the corner, keep the opponent trapped there, or sacrifice position for a Super Art finish?
| Your priority | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Safe, repeatable pressure | Light mine route or L/M Backfist detonation | Lower commitment while preserving the mine loop. |
| Large corner turn | Medium route into H Backfist | The documented +31-frame corner advantage supports a meaty dash setup. |
| Maximum documented detonation advantage | OD Psycho Crusher with an active mine | The current frame reference lists about +82 frames, at the cost of Drive gauge. |
| Fireball answer plus conversion | OD Psycho Crusher | It can challenge a projectile and detonate the mine in the same sequence. |
| Round-ending damage | Mine detonation route into SA3 | Spend the available resources when the Level 3 finish changes the round. |
Execution difficulty also matters. A route that drops under tournament pressure is worse than a simpler route that consistently preserves your turn. Add the harder Shadow Rise and Super Art extension only after the light and medium confirms are automatic.
Defense: what to do when Bison loses momentum
Bison does not have an invincible OD reversal. When he is cornered or trapped in a blockstring, gambling on a reversal is therefore especially costly. The safer plan is to block, use parry when the timing is clear, and wait for a gap or a system-mechanic escape instead of forcing an attack through pressure.
Recognize the dangerous moments
- Blocked Double Knee Press at point-blank range can leave Bison at a disadvantage, especially if the opponent has already shown a punish.
- Raw Backfist Combo is listed at approximately -14 to -15 on block, so repeating it without a confirm can give the opponent a guaranteed punish.
- Spending all Drive gauge on an OD mine route can leave fewer defensive options if the conversion does not end the round.
Regain the turn methodically
First block the obvious strike. Then watch for a throw attempt, a gap, or a predictable jump. Tech the throw when the read is strong, anti-air only when the jump is confirmed, and return to neutral after the sequence ends. Bison’s offense is powerful enough that you do not need to win every defensive exchange with a risky button; surviving one sequence often gives you the next chance to establish a mine.

- Set the dummy to random block and confirm
cr.LK > cr.LP > st.LP > L Psycho Crusher Attackonly on hit. - Practice
cr.LP or cr.LK > st.LK > L Backfist Combountil the mine appears consistently and the follow-up timing feels natural. - Add the medium route

- Attach a mine, then rehearse L/M Backfist, H Backfist, OD Psycho Crusher, and Devil Reverse so you can recognize each resulting spacing.
- In the corner, drill the H Backfist sequence into forward dash and meaty 4HK against wake-up block, wake-up button, and wake-up jump recordings.
- After Drive Rush, practice the low, standing-medium, overhead, throw, and shimmy options as separate choices rather than mashing them into one automatic string.
- Finish by practicing defense: block a recorded pressure sequence, identify the gap, and return to neutral without relying on an invincible reversal.
Patch-sensitive frame data
Frame values and combo routes are tied to the SF6 Lab pages and game versions cited for them. The standing heavy punch figures of +5 on hit and +1 on block are specifically from the 2026-08-03 version. The mine advantages and automatic-detonation damage are listed on the current pages cited in the guide. Recheck the current frame and combo pages after a balance update before treating any number as permanent.
