You can play GoldenEye 007 on a Windows or Linux PC with modern controls through a community-made N64-source port. It supports mouse and keyboard as well as a modern dual-stick controller, but it is a pre-1.0 project and requires you to provide a compatible NTSC-U N64 ROM. Microsoft’s official release has modern dual-analog controls, but it is for Xbox consoles and cloud gaming—not a native Windows PC version.

The N64-source port is the direct choice if you want to play on a PC and configure mouse or controller input. Its project says it is built from reconstructed source for the 1997 N64 game, not the Xbox 360 remaster. The project’s v0.4.0 status report describes all 20 solo missions as working at a steady 60 fps; that is the project’s own status claim, not an independent performance test. It also warns that the software is pre-1.0, so features may be missing and changes may break compatibility. Project documentation

Set up the N64-source PC port
The documented quick start requires the NTSC-U (US) version of the game in big-endian .z64 format. The project lists PAL and Japanese support as roadmap items, not currently supported versions. Its release bundle does not include a ROM or game assets.

- Download and unpack the Windows or Linux release bundle from the project’s releases page.
- Create a folder named
data/next to the port’s executable. - Place your supported big-endian NTSC-U ROM in
data/and name itge007.ntsc-final.z64. - Launch the executable from that folder. On first run, the project says it detects the ROM and generates the derived asset folders.
The project states that users must supply their own ROM. That describes what its software package includes; it does not determine whether a particular copy or method of obtaining a ROM is lawful in your jurisdiction. Check the project’s current instructions and release notes before setup because its supported regions and features can change. Project documentation

Configure modern controls on PC
Mouse and keyboard
The port documents click-to-lock mouse behavior, selectable N64-style or centered FPS-style aiming, per-device sensitivity, control rebinding, and crosshair options. Adjust these in the port’s input settings to suit your preference; the documentation does not identify one aim style or sensitivity as best for everyone. Project documentation

What DesktopGoldenEye’s controls look like
DesktopGoldenEye is a different Windows project, not another name for the N64-source port. Its README lists these default keys and actions:

When the Xbox version makes more sense
If you want an official release and have an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft’s version offers modern controls, including dual analog sticks. Xbox Wire says it includes the 20-mission campaign and split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. The announcement also mentions Xbox Cloud Gaming.
