Make filled peanut butter and jelly snack bites by processing softened dates with oats and peanut butter, then wrapping that mixture around a small spoonful of jam. The no-bake recipe takes about 30 minutes, including a 20-minute chill, and makes 12 servings, according to Food Lion’s recipe.

Ingredients and equipment

For the filled date-and-oat version, gather:

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup strawberry jam
  • Hot water, enough to cover the dates while soaking

You’ll also need a food processor, a tablespoon measure, and a tray or container for chilling the bites. The quantities and method are from Food Lion’s recipe.

How to make filled PB&J bites

  1. Soften the dates. Put the chopped dates in a bowl, cover them with hot water, and soak for 5–10 minutes, until softened. Drain them well.
  2. Make the outer mixture. Pulse the softened dates, oats, and peanut butter in a food processor until smooth.
  3. Shape the portions. Divide the mixture into tablespoon-size portions. Flatten each one into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  4. Add the jelly center. Place 1/2 teaspoon of jam in the center of each circle. Bring the edges around the jam, pinch them shut, and roll gently into a smooth ball.
  5. Chill before serving. Refrigerate the bites for 20 minutes to firm them up.

These quantities and steps follow Food Lion’s filled-bite recipe, which lists 12 servings and a total preparation time of 30 minutes. Its page estimates 100 calories per serving; that figure is the recipe page’s estimate for its version, not a general nutrition value for homemade PB&J bites.

Choose between filled bites and mixed PB&J balls

If you want a smooth shell with a distinct jam center, use the date-and-oat method above. For a crunchier bite without a separate filling, a granola mixture is another option.

The comparison reflects the methods in Food Lion’s recipe and Jif’s PB&J bites recipe.

Crunchy granola-and-nut variation

Stir together 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup strawberry jam, 2 cups classic granola, 1/2 cup sliced almonds or other chopped nuts, and 1/2 cup dried cranberries or other dried fruit. Chill the mixture for at least an hour, then roll it firmly into one-inch balls. Coconut flakes, cocoa powder, or extra chopped nuts can be used as coatings. This method comes from Jif’s recipe.

Adjust the flavor and texture

  • Try a different nut-butter texture: Food Lion suggests crunchy peanut butter in place of creamy for extra crunch.
  • Switch the fruit spread: Strawberry, grape, raspberry, or apricot jam are options suggested by Food Lion.
  • Use a related oat-bite adjustment cautiously: Health Canada’s separate no-bake oat-bite recipe suggests adding nut butter if a mixture is too dry, or oats if it is too wet. This is a starting point for adjusting a similar mixture, not a tested alteration to the filled date-and-jam recipe.

For a different oat-forward snack, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s recipe combines 1 cup old-fashioned oats, 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter, 1/3 cup honey, 1/2 cup ground flaxseed, and 1 teaspoon vanilla, with dried fruit or peanut butter chips as optional additions. Chill the mixture for about 30 minutes, then roll it into one-inch balls. See Cornell Cooperative Extension’s recipe for that variation.

Storage and allergy notes

Store the filled date-and-jam bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use them within one week, following Food Lion’s storage guidance. Health Canada says its separate oat-bite recipe can be refrigerated for up to seven days or frozen for up to three months; those freezing instructions have not been established for the filled PB&J version. See Health Canada’s oat-bite recipe.

Peanut butter is a core ingredient in these recipes, so they are not suitable for someone with a peanut allergy. Although Health Canada’s related oat-bite recipe allows a non-nut alternative, that substitution has not been verified for the filled PB&J formula.
