In the United States, recreational drone flyers must also meet FAA requirements such as passing TRUST and obtaining airspace authorization when required.

If you choose an RC airplane, start with a trainer and instruction
Choose a basic trainer, not a fast-reacting model
AMA’s trainer guidance recommends a basic trainer for newcomers. Slower, less reactive flight characteristics give a beginner more time to plan and respond than a sport or scale aircraft designed for more demanding flying.
Find help before buying
Arrange experienced-pilot instruction and locate an appropriate flying field before your first flight. AMA’s getting-started guidance and first-flight guidance recommend learning with an experienced pilot; the getting-started material cautions against an inexperienced person flying a true four-channel trainer alone.

A simulator can help you practise transmitter operation, but it does not replace supervised first flights. Local club or instructor access is therefore a meaningful part of the airplane decision, not an optional detail to leave until after purchase.
Check what an RTF package actually includes
A ready-to-fly (RTF) model can reduce assembly work, but the label does not guarantee that every package includes the transmitter, battery, or charger. AMA’s getting-started material discusses RTF formats. Confirm the exact contents of the model you are considering, and account for any separately sold equipment and instruction.

If you choose a drone in the United States, check the rules before flying
For recreational flying in the United States, the FAA requires flyers to pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and carry proof of completion. You must keep the drone within visual line of sight, yield to manned aircraft, and obtain authorization before flying in controlled airspace where required. The FAA also requires registration for drones weighing 250 grams (0.55 pounds) or more. See the FAA’s recreational-flyer guidance for current steps and requirements.
The FAA’s drone-flying explainer gives a plain-language overview that includes staying below 400 feet, keeping the aircraft in sight, avoiding other aircraft, and not creating a hazard to people or property. Use the current recreational-flyer guidance for operational details; altitude alone is not a complete checklist.

These are U.S. rules, not worldwide advice. Requirements elsewhere depend on the relevant aviation authority. In any location, park, property, and site rules may also limit where hobby aircraft can be flown. Check those restrictions when planning a new flying location. Also, unpaid does not automatically mean a flight qualifies as recreational: the FAA distinguishes limited recreational operation from Part 107 operations, and purpose and other details matter.
