Which version of Final Fantasy XV should you buy?
Your platform determines the correct complete edition. Buying the base game and then trying to assemble the add-ons separately is unnecessary when the complete editions are available in your region.

Why the complete editions matter
The Royal Edition and Windows Edition are not merely cosmetic bundles. Square Enix’s support information identifies substantial additions, including an expanded Insomnia City Ruins area with new quests and enemies, a controllable Royal Vessel with exploration, fishing and recipes, and an accessory that unlocks Armiger Unleashed after you meet the royal-arms requirement. The console product description also lists the character episodes and Comrades content included with the season pass.
How to play Final Fantasy XV on a Windows PC
Check the requirements for your exact computer
Square Enix’s published PC guidance directs players to the current store listing for the required operating system, processor, graphics card, memory and storage. Those values can change with the active Windows Edition build and storefront presentation, so do not rely on an old minimum-specification chart copied from another site. Compare every item in the listing with your machine before purchasing:
- Operating-system version supported by the current Windows Edition listing.
- Processor model and required instruction-set or performance class.
- Graphics processor, dedicated video memory and supported display features.
- System memory (RAM).
- Free storage for the game and room for updates.
- A Windows account and the platform account required by the store from which you install.
The Windows Edition supports native 4K and HDR10 and exposes graphics settings up to 8K, but those are output options rather than a promise of a particular frame rate. Resolution, image quality and smoothness depend on your CPU, GPU, memory, display and chosen settings.

Use the official benchmark before you commit to settings
Square Enix recommends testing your computer with the official Final Fantasy XV benchmark. Download it from http://benchmark.finalfantasyxv.com/en/, run it at the resolution and quality level you expect to use, and treat the result as an estimate for that configuration. A benchmark cannot account for every background application, driver version or later game update, so close unnecessary programs and keep your graphics driver current when diagnosing an unexpectedly poor result. Do not interpret someone else’s score as a guaranteed frame rate for your PC.

PC installation sequence
- Purchase or redeem FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION from the PC storefront you intend to use.
- Confirm the store’s current requirements against your operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM and available drive space.
- Install the official benchmark and test the machine if you are uncertain about performance.
- Install the game through the storefront and sign in to the required Steam account. Square Enix states that internet access and Steam account registration are required to play the PC game.
- Allow the launcher or storefront to download the latest game update and the included downloadable content before starting.
- Choose a resolution and graphics preset your benchmark supports, then adjust individual settings only after you have a stable baseline.
If the game starts but performance is unstable, first return to the benchmark and compare the same resolution and quality settings. A mismatch between the benchmark configuration and the in-game configuration is a more useful clue than a generic claim that a particular graphics card should run the game at a fixed frame rate.
How to play on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
PS4: use Royal Edition
FINAL FANTASY XV ROYAL EDITION is the complete console package for PS4. Install the game, apply the available updates and download the included add-on content while signed in to the PlayStation account that owns the edition. The Royal Pack and season-pass material are part of the edition described on the PlayStation product page, so check the game hub or add-on management screen if an episode does not appear after installation.
PS5: play the PS4 release through compatibility
PlayStation lists Royal Edition as a PS4 product that can be played on PS5. It is therefore PS4 software running through PS5 compatibility, not a separately listed native PS5 edition. PlayStation cautions that your system may need to be updated to the latest system software and that some PS4 features may be absent. Keep the console online during the first installation and update, then consult the PS5 game hub if an add-on is shown as owned but not installed.

PS4 and PS5 setup steps
- Buy or insert FINAL FANTASY XV ROYAL EDITION for PS4.
- On PS5, confirm that the console has current system software before launching the PS4 application.
- Install the game and every listed Royal Edition or season-pass add-on from the game library or add-on management screen.
- Leave enough free space for the installation and later updates; the published game-size figures are listed below.
- Start the game once the update queue has finished, especially before attempting Comrades.
How to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One: use Royal Edition
Square Enix identifies Royal Edition for Xbox One. Install that edition, download its updates and confirm that the Royal Pack and season-pass items are present in the game’s manage-content screen. The Xbox store listing is the authority for the current SKU, regional availability and any platform-specific download choices.

Xbox Series X|S: use backward compatibility
The Xbox store lists Final Fantasy XV for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox says most Xbox One games work on Series X|S through backward compatibility. If you own the digital game, Xbox says it appears in the Ready to Install area for a compatible console. For a disc copy, insert the disc after installation and keep it in the drive whenever you launch the game; the disc acts as your license.
This is still the Xbox One game running under the console’s compatibility system. Do not assume that a Series X|S listing means a separate native edition with new performance guarantees. Check the current store description for the exact product and compatibility label in your region.
Xbox setup steps
- Buy or insert FINAL FANTASY XV ROYAL EDITION for Xbox One.
- On Series X|S, open Ready to Install for a digital purchase, or insert the Xbox One disc for a disc license.
- Install the game and all listed add-ons, then apply the latest update while connected to Xbox network services.
- Keep the disc in the drive for every play session if your license is disc-based.
- Confirm the published storage requirement and leave additional room for updates before beginning the download.
How much storage does Final Fantasy XV need?
Square Enix’s support pages publish these digital-install figures for the console versions. The support page does not state a year for either figure, so treat them as published reference values rather than a guarantee that every later update will occupy exactly the same amount of space.

Square Enix does not provide one fixed PC number in the supplied support information because the Windows Edition build and storefront requirements can change. Use the current PC store listing, then reserve more free space than the displayed requirement so the platform can apply patches and downloadable content without stopping mid-update. A digital console installation can also require temporary working space while an update is unpacked.

What you need for the Comrades multiplayer expansion
Comrades is the online multiplayer expansion included in the complete editions described above. Square Enix states that console play requires an Xbox Live Gold membership or a PlayStation Plus subscription, while the PC version requires internet access and Steam registration. Subscription names and service policies can change, so check the current Xbox or PlayStation store listing before paying for a membership solely for Comrades.
For the smoothest first launch, install the game update and all Comrades-related content before opening the expansion. If Comrades is missing, open the platform’s manage-content or add-on screen and verify that the Royal Edition’s downloadable items are installed under the same account that owns the game.

No platform is universally best. The practical choice depends on the hardware and account ecosystem you already use.

Choose PC if you want adjustable resolution and graphics options and are willing to validate your own hardware. Choose PlayStation if your library and saves are centered on PS4 or PS5. Choose Xbox if you already use Xbox One or Series X|S and want the game in that backward-compatible ecosystem. These are feature and compatibility distinctions, not a universal ranking.

Common installation and launch problems
The store shows the base game but not the Royal content
Recheck the product name. On PlayStation and Xbox, the complete console edition is Royal Edition; on PC, it is Windows Edition. Then open the platform’s add-on or manage-content screen and verify that the season-pass and Royal Pack items are installed. A purchase can be valid while an optional content package remains in the download queue.
The game will not start on PC
Confirm internet access and Steam account registration, both of which Square Enix lists as requirements. Compare your operating system, processor, graphics card, RAM and storage with the current store listing. If the machine is near the requirement boundary, run the official benchmark and lower the resolution or quality level before changing more advanced settings.
Performance is lower than expected on PC
Match the in-game resolution and quality settings to the benchmark configuration, close competing applications, and check that the game is using the intended graphics processor. Do not treat a published graphics feature such as 4K, HDR10 or an 8K option as a frame-rate promise; those options depend on the complete system.
The game is not visible on PS5
Look in the game library for the PS4 version of Royal Edition, install current PS5 system software and check the add-on management screen. PlayStation notes that some PS4 features may not be available on PS5, so compatibility does not mean every PS4 behavior is reproduced identically.
A disc copy does not launch on Xbox Series X|S
Install the compatible Xbox One game while the disc is inserted, apply the update, and leave that disc in the drive when launching. Xbox’s backward-compatibility system uses the inserted disc to verify ownership; a digital entitlement and a disc license are handled differently.
Comrades asks for an online membership
That prompt is expected on console: Square Enix lists Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus for console Comrades play. Check the current platform store for the present subscription name and whether the service is available in your region. On PC, confirm internet access and the required Steam registration instead.
