All four versions use the same basic design: fast arena movement, weapon switching, weapon modifications, upgrades, melee attacks, and glory kills. The meaningful buying decision is therefore how you want to control and display the game, not which platform has a different campaign.

Windows PC
PC is the natural choice when you meet or exceed the published CPU and graphics requirements and want to tune resolution, quality settings, and input. The Steam listing is the official PC purchase and installation route referenced by the requirements. A keyboard and mouse make rapid aiming and weapon selection straightforward, while a compatible gamepad is also a practical option.
The published requirements date from 2016. They remain the correct baseline for deciding whether a system is in the documented support range, but they do not promise a particular frame rate on modern hardware. Your monitor resolution, selected quality settings, background applications, and drivers can all change actual performance.
PlayStation 4 and PS5
The PlayStation listing records the PS4 release as May 13, 2016. If you own a PS5, the PS4 game is playable through backward compatibility, but PlayStation’s notice says that some PS4 features may be absent. Treat that as a feature caveat rather than a guarantee that every online or peripheral behavior will match the original console.
Console editions avoid the PC’s hardware-matching exercise. You still need enough free storage for the installation and updates, and you should sign in to the relevant console account to download the edition you purchased.
Xbox One
The Xbox One edition is part of the original 2016 console release. Bethesda’s launch guidance specifically advised reserving 50 GB for the installation. Leave additional working room when possible so the console can download updates without forcing you to delete another game.
Nintendo Switch
The Switch edition launched on November 10, 2017. It carries the original campaign and DLC, plus multiple difficulty modes, Arcade mode, and multiplayer. It can be played handheld, on a tabletop stand, or docked with a TV.

Executive producer Marty Stratton said the team had “a very scalable engine” and tailored the port for Switch hardware. He also explained that the team “did target 30 frames a second cuz we wanted a target that we could confidently hit and know that the gameplay was solid.” That target is the key trade-off: Switch provides portability, but it is not the version to choose if a higher frame-rate target is your priority.

How to interpret the numbers
- Check 64-bit Windows first. A 32-bit installation does not match the published operating-system requirement. Because Steam’s client policy has changed since 2016, confirm that your current Steam client supports the Windows version you plan to use.
- Compare the exact CPU and GPU classes. An i5-2400 or FX-8320 is the stated minimum processor class; an i7-3770 or FX-8350 is the stated recommended class. The same distinction applies to the listed 2 GB and 4 GB graphics cards.
- Plan for 55 GB, not merely the download size. The requirement is available storage for the PC installation. Keep extra free space for downloads and the operating system rather than filling a drive to its last gigabyte.
- Do not treat “recommended” as a frame-rate guarantee. Bethesda and Steam published these figures in 2016. They identify a target hardware tier, not a modern test result at a specified resolution or quality preset.
Installation and first launch
Windows PC through Steam
- Confirm that the computer has a supported 64-bit Windows installation, at least the listed CPU and GPU class, 8 GB of RAM, and 55 GB of available storage.
- Install or update the Steam client. Because the historical game requirements mention Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 while the client has a newer live support policy, check Steam’s current compatibility notice before proceeding on an older system.
- Purchase or redeem the game in Steam, then select it in your Library and choose Install.
- Select a library drive with enough free space. Allow Steam to download the game and any required updates; the final disk use can differ from the nominal download size.
- Launch the game from the Library. If you intend to use multiplayer or SnapMap, make sure the PC has broadband access, which the published requirements list for those features.
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch
- Obtain the edition for your console or handheld and sign in to the platform account that owns it.
- Before starting the installation, reserve the required free space. Bethesda’s launch guidance specifies 50 GB for PS4 and Xbox One; Switch storage needs vary by edition and system state, so follow the capacity shown by the Nintendo software listing and leave room for updates.
- Install from the disc or digital library and allow the console to download updates. A wired or stable wireless connection reduces interruptions during a large download.
- Start with the single-player campaign. Learn the movement and weapon controls before entering multiplayer, Arcade mode, or user-created content.
Default PC controls and the first hour
The manual’s default PC bindings provide a useful starting point. They can be remapped, so treat these as the controls to expect on a fresh installation rather than permanent rules.

On a controller, the exact button labels depend on the platform and your layout. Open the control settings before the first serious fight and verify which input performs weapon switching, melee, chainsaw, and the weapon mod. The important principle is to keep those actions immediately accessible.

How the campaign expects you to fight
DOOM (2016) is not built around crouching behind a wall until health regenerates. Steam describes the design plainly: “There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell’s raging demon hordes.” Damage avoidance comes from movement, positioning, target selection, and using the right weapon at the right moment.
Keep moving deliberately
Use the arena’s width and height. Strafe while firing, jump or double-jump to break an enemy’s line of attack, and keep a route open rather than backing into a dead end. Movement is not decoration; it is your main defensive system.
Switch weapons instead of forcing one solution
The campaign expects weapon variety. If a target resists your current approach or a group forms at a bad distance, switch rather than waiting for one gun to solve everything. The Q key and weapon wheel exist to make that decision quickly.

Use weapon modifications and upgrades
Weapon mods change how a gun behaves and create different answers to enemy pressure. Try each available modification in a safe encounter, then invest in upgrades that support the way you actually fight. A player who stays mobile and favors close engagements may value different improvements from one who controls space at range.
Understand melee and glory kills
Melee attacks and glory kills are part of the intended combat loop, not optional flourishes. When an enemy is vulnerable, closing in can turn a dangerous moment into an opportunity. Do not stop moving simply because a glory-kill prompt appears; check the surrounding arena before committing.
Reserve the chainsaw and BFG for turning points
The chainsaw and BFG are powerful, situation-dependent tools. Learn their default inputs early so you can reach them without searching the keyboard. Use them when they solve a difficult group or restore control of an encounter, rather than activating them accidentally during routine movement.

Modes to try after the campaign basics
Single-player campaign
Begin here even if multiplayer is your main interest. The campaign teaches movement, weapon switching, mods, upgrades, melee, and glory kills in a controlled sequence. Start on a difficulty that lets you learn the systems without turning every room into a restart loop; you can raise the challenge later.

Arcade mode
Arcade mode emphasizes replayable combat and score-oriented runs. It is most useful after you understand the weapons and movement, because the mode rewards efficient decisions rather than introducing the fundamentals.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is included in the platform editions described here, but the PC requirements specifically call for broadband access. Check the platform’s current online-service requirements and account status before assuming every network feature is available in your region.
SnapMap
SnapMap is a built-in editor for creating and sharing maps and gameplay logic. Steam calls it “a powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor” that enables different gameplay experiences. Broadband is listed for SnapMap on PC. Treat it as a separate creative mode: learn the campaign’s controls first, then use the editor to experiment with layouts, objectives, and rules.
Common problems and practical fixes
The installer says there is not enough space
On PC, free at least the published 55 GB before starting and leave additional room for updates. On PS4 and Xbox One, Bethesda advised reserving 50 GB. If the console reports less space, remove or move another title, clear unneeded captures, or choose a different storage device before retrying.

Your Windows version is old
The game’s historical requirements name 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, but Steam’s client support is a separate, newer policy. If Steam will not install or update, check the current client requirements rather than assuming the 2016 game specification overrides them. A supported 64-bit Windows installation is the safest starting point.

The game runs, but performance is disappointing
Meeting the minimum specification only places the PC in the published support tier. Lower resolution or graphics options, close background applications, and confirm that the game is using the intended graphics processor. Compare your hardware with the recommended CPU and GPU tier before expecting higher settings. No published figure here guarantees a particular frame rate.
Multiplayer or SnapMap cannot connect
Confirm broadband access, sign in to the platform account, and check the platform’s current online-service status. A single-player launch problem and a network-service problem are different: resolve the installation first, then test online features separately.
You are playing on PS5 and a feature is missing
PlayStation warns that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5. Check the console’s backward-compatibility information and compare behavior with the original PS4 environment before treating the difference as an installation fault.
The Switch version feels different from a high-end PC
That difference is expected. The Switch port was tailored to its hardware and targeted 30 frames per second. Use the portable version when handheld access is the priority; choose a PC or original-console edition if your priority is a different performance or display target.
Content and play-safety guidance
Steam labels the game as containing blood and gore, violence, language, and horror. Consider that rating before giving access to a younger player or someone sensitive to graphic imagery.
The manual advises playing in a well-lit room, avoiding play when tired, taking a 10–15 minute break each hour, and stopping if seizure-related symptoms occur. Follow those precautions, especially during long sessions or when playing on a bright display in a dark room.
