How to Play Co-Op Games Remotely With a Friend on Different Platforms

Start with the exact game, not the console. Native cross-play works only when that title supports both platforms and editions, and it may require a publisher account or an online subscription. If the game has no cross-play, a host-based option—Steam Remote Play Together, Xbox Remote Play, PS Remote Play or PlayStation Share Play—may let you play, but each has different ownership, hardware and latency limits.

Check the game before choosing a method

Cross-play is a game-level feature. Being connected to the same service, using the same voice app or owning compatible consoles does not make a game cross-platform. Look up the game’s current support page and confirm all of the following before you buy anything or change settings:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The exact platforms, such as Xbox Series consoles, PlayStation 5, PC or Nintendo Switch, rather than just the console family.
  • Whether cross-play covers the edition you own. A remaster, cloud version, old-generation release and PC version can have different multiplayer rules.
  • Whether cross-progression is included. Shared saves or purchases are separate from the ability to play together.
  • Whether both players need a publisher account, platform account or a paid online-multiplayer subscription.
  • Whether the desired mode supports cross-play. Campaign co-op, competitive matchmaking and local modes can have different restrictions.

If any requirement is unclear, do not assume that a game advertised as “multiplayer” supports PlayStation-to-Xbox or console-to-PC play. Ask for the exact game title, edition and the two platforms first; that information determines the answer.

Choose the right way to connect

Method Best use What must be true Main limits
Native cross-play Both people own supported versions of the same game The title lists both platforms, and required accounts or subscriptions are active Support, editions, modes and account rules vary by game
Steam Remote Play Together A Steam game has local co-op but no native online cross-play The host owns and runs the game on a PC; the title supports Remote Play Together The host PC and connection carry the game; input latency affects the guest
Xbox Remote Play Streaming an Xbox console session to another compatible device An Xbox console, enabled remote features and a suitable network It streams the console session; it does not add cross-play to a game. Some games or online multiplayer may require Game Pass
PS Remote Play Streaming a PS4 or PS5 game to a compatible device A PlayStation console and account, remote-play settings and high-speed internet It is a stream of the host console, not a universal cross-platform multiplayer service
PlayStation Share Play Letting another PlayStation user watch, take control or join supported modes when one person owns the game Both users are in the PlayStation ecosystem and the game supports the requested Share Play mode It does not create Xbox, PC or Switch cross-play, and not every game mode is supported
Nintendo GameShare Sharing a supported game session between Switch systems An eligible Switch 2 host for online sharing; compatible systems for local wireless Online guests must use Switch 2; local wireless can include an original Switch; up to four systems can join
Discord voice or screen share Talking while playing or showing a screen when in-game chat is poor A Discord voice channel or call, working microphone and screen-capture permissions Discord does not provide multiplayer access or cross-play; screen sharing uses extra bandwidth

Native cross-play: the normal solution

1. Verify both platforms and editions

Open the publisher’s support page for the specific game and compare the two platforms line by line. For example, a listing that says “PC and Xbox” may mean the Microsoft Store PC edition but not every cloud or older-console release. Confirm whether cross-generation play is allowed when one person uses an older console. PlayStation supports cross-generation multiplayer for games that explicitly implement it, so a PS4 player can join a PS5 player only when that title says it does.

2. Complete account and subscription requirements

Create or link the publisher account requested by the game, then add your friend using the game’s own friend system if required. Platform friend lists and publisher friend lists are not always interchangeable. Check the online-multiplayer subscription requirement for each platform and region; a free-to-play title, paid title and cloud session may follow different rules.

3. Enable cross-play in the game

Many games put the switch under Settings, Online, Privacy or Gameplay. Both players should allow cross-platform matchmaking, then restart the game if the setting does not take effect immediately. If one player has disabled cross-play, invitations may be invisible or matchmaking may search only within one platform.

4. Invite through the supported path

Use the game’s cross-platform invite code, username or publisher account ID. A console invite sent only through a platform menu may fail to reach a PC player even though the game supports cross-play. Have both players appear online, select the same region or data center when the game offers that choice, and confirm that the intended co-op mode—not a solo or local-only mode—is selected.

5. Test with a short session

Before starting a long campaign, create a lobby, join it, and play for several minutes. Check voice chat, player names, save behavior and whether the second player can reconnect. This separates an account or compatibility problem from a temporary server outage.

Current cross-play examples

Gears of War: Reloaded

The Coalition announced in 2025 that Gears of War: Reloaded supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox, PC, cloud, PlayStation 5 and Steam, including two-player online campaign co-op. The announcement is a useful example of why the game’s own platform list matters: cross-play and cross-progression are stated together, and the supported campaign player count is specific. Check the game’s current requirements before inviting someone, because account and subscription rules can still depend on the platform edition.

We Were Here series

Total Mayhem Games announced on October 9, 2025 that We Were Here, We Were Here Too and We Were Here Together support cross-play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. The same announcement noted that We Were Here Together had joined the series on Nintendo Switch. Treat this as a title-specific example rather than evidence that every game in a genre supports cross-play.

When the game has no native cross-play

Host-based features can make a local co-op game playable over the internet, but they work differently from native cross-play. One device runs the game and sends video, audio and input; the guest is not receiving a separately rendered copy. As a result, the host’s hardware, upload speed and network stability become central.

Steam Remote Play Together for local co-op PC games

What it does

Steam Remote Play Together shares a Steam game’s local co-op session online. It is useful when the game was designed for two or more people on one screen but has no built-in online or cross-platform multiplayer. The host owns and runs the game on a PC; the friend connects to that session and sends controller or keyboard input back to the host.

How to start a session

  1. Install the game on the host PC and confirm that its store page lists Remote Play Together.
  2. Launch the game through Steam and open the local co-op or split-screen mode.
  3. Open the Steam overlay, select the friend, and choose the Remote Play Together invite option.
  4. Have the friend accept the invitation and connect a controller if the game expects gamepad input.
  5. Assign each input device to a player in the game. If both inputs control player one, open the game’s controller or keyboard assignment screen and reassign them.
  6. Play a short test round before changing stream quality. If controls feel delayed, move the host to a wired connection, close downloads and reduce visual quality in the Remote Play settings.

Steam Link can connect phones, tablets, TVs, computers and compatible virtual-reality headsets to a computer running Steam. That is useful for reaching the host PC from another room, but Steam Link by itself does not convert a non-cross-play game into native cross-platform multiplayer.

What the guest does and does not need

The host must run the game, and the game must expose local co-op controls that Remote Play can pass through. The guest does not receive an independent copy of the game world. If the title requires each participant to have a separate account, online subscription or unique save, Remote Play may not satisfy that requirement even though the invitation works.

Xbox Remote Play

What it is for

Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on an Xbox console to supported PCs, phones, tablets, TVs and virtual-reality headsets. Xbox lists a 10 Mbps internet connection requirement for Remote Play. Some games or online multiplayer may also require Game Pass, so check the current Xbox support page and the game’s own requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preparation and connection

  1. Install the game on the Xbox console and sign in to the account that owns or can access it.
  2. Enable the console’s remote features in Xbox settings and leave the console available for remote connection.
  3. On the compatible client device, sign in with the appropriate Xbox account and start Remote Play.
  4. Connect a supported controller, then test the game while the console is on the same network before trying a remote network.
  5. For a friend to participate, use the game’s own local or online co-op design. Remote Play is the stream; it is not an invitation system that adds cross-play to an otherwise incompatible platform.

A 10 Mbps connection is Xbox’s stated baseline, not a guarantee of smooth play. Upload capacity from the console’s network, Wi-Fi interference and distance to the service can still create delay. A wired console connection and a strong client connection usually make the result more consistent.

PS Remote Play

What it is for

PS Remote Play streams PS4 and PS5 games to compatible devices. Sony recommends high-speed internet for the feature. Console-to-console instructions require the same PlayStation account on the host and client, so check the exact account rule for the device combination you are using.

Basic setup

  1. On the PS4 or PS5, enable Remote Play in the console’s system settings and keep the console ready for connection.
  2. Install the PS Remote Play app on the supported client device and sign in with the required PlayStation account.
  3. Pair or connect a compatible controller, then select the console in the app.
  4. Confirm that the game runs correctly over the local network before testing from another location.
  5. If a friend is meant to play, use a game mode and account arrangement that supports a second player. Remote Play alone does not make a PlayStation game playable with an Xbox, PC or Switch player.

Remote Play is most useful when one person needs to move the console session to a phone, tablet, computer or another supported screen. It is not a substitute for a game’s native cross-play servers.

PlayStation Share Play when one person owns the game

Share Play is a separate PlayStation feature. In supported scenarios, one player can let another PlayStation user view the game, take control or play together even when only one person owns it. The exact options depend on the game and the selected Share Play mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start a PlayStation party with your friend and open the Share Play control.
  2. Choose whether the guest should view the session, take control of your game or join you in a supported multiplayer mode.
  3. Accept the guest’s connection and launch the game mode allowed by Share Play.
  4. If the guest cannot join, check the game’s Share Play restrictions, account region and network quality before troubleshooting the console.

Both users must be in the PlayStation ecosystem for this feature. Share Play does not let a PlayStation owner invite an Xbox, PC or Nintendo Switch player into a PlayStation-only session, and it does not bypass a title’s age, region or mode restrictions.

Nintendo GameShare

Nintendo’s GameShare feature has a specific hardware split. Nintendo says an online GameShare session requires a Switch 2 host and that online guests must also use Switch 2. Local wireless sharing can include an original Switch, and a session can include up to four systems. Confirm that the game supports GameShare before attempting to connect.

  1. Update the host Switch 2 and the guest systems, then open the supported game on the host.
  2. Choose the game’s GameShare or local-wireless option rather than a standard online matchmaking mode.
  3. Have each guest follow the on-screen system-connection instructions.
  4. Keep the systems within the range recommended by the game for local wireless, or use the online path when every participant has an eligible Switch 2.
  5. Test the maximum player count with the game’s own instructions; the platform limit is up to four systems, but an individual title can support fewer players.

Use Discord for communication, not cross-play

Discord can keep a group coordinated when a game’s voice chat is missing, unreliable or limited to one platform. Its Go Live and Screen Share tools can share an application window or the whole screen in a voice channel or call. Discord’s documentation says, “Up to 50 people can share their video or screen at a time in a Discord voice chat,” a capacity that is far above the player count of most co-op sessions.

Set up a clear voice channel

  1. Create or join a voice channel and ask everyone to select the intended microphone and headphones in Discord’s voice settings.
  2. Use headphones to prevent the game audio from feeding back into the microphone. A USB gaming headset with a microphone is optional, but it can reduce echo and make speech easier to understand.
  3. Choose Go Live or Screen Share, select the game window when possible, and grant screen-recording permission if the operating system requests it.
  4. Keep the shared screen optional when every player already has the game. Screen sharing consumes bandwidth and can make a marginal connection worse.

Discord cannot provide a game license, create a lobby or translate input between platforms. Use it alongside native cross-play or a remote-play method, not as a replacement for either.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot in the right order

If the friend cannot find or accept the invite

  • Recheck the exact game, edition, platform pair and supported mode.
  • Confirm that cross-play is enabled for both players and that neither privacy setting blocks invitations.
  • Link the required publisher account and use the game’s account ID instead of only a console friend list.
  • Verify online-subscription or Game Pass requirements for the relevant platform.
  • Update both game installations and restart the game after changing cross-play settings.

If Remote Play connects but controls feel delayed

  • Test the host console or PC with a wired network connection.
  • Stop downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the host and client networks.
  • Move the client closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use a wired client where practical.
  • Lower stream resolution or frame rate until input becomes reliable.
  • Separate a controller problem from a network problem by testing the controller locally on the host device.

If a Discord stream is black, stuttering or silent

  • Check the internet connection and use a wired connection when possible.
  • Restart and update Discord.
  • Verify screen-recording permissions for Discord and the operating system.
  • Disable hardware acceleration if the stream lags or displays a black window.
  • Lower stream quality or frame rate.
  • Confirm that a headset or headphones are connected and selected as the input and output devices.

These steps follow Discord’s troubleshooting guidance. Solve the connection, permissions and audio path first; only then investigate the game’s servers or matchmaking.

A practical decision path

  1. Both people own the game on supported platforms: use native cross-play and follow the game’s account and subscription requirements.
  2. The game is local co-op on Steam: check for Remote Play Together and let the stronger PC host.
  3. The game is installed on one Xbox or PlayStation: use Remote Play to move that console session to a supported device, but do not expect it to add cross-platform multiplayer.
  4. Only one PlayStation user owns the game: try Share Play if the title supports the required view, control or co-play mode.
  5. The game supports Nintendo GameShare: use a Switch 2 host for online sharing, remembering the Switch 2 guest requirement and the four-system ceiling.
  6. You only need conversation or a spectator view: add Discord voice or screen share after the gameplay method is working.

Pre-session checklist

  • Exact game title, edition and platform pair confirmed.
  • Cross-play, Remote Play Together, Share Play or GameShare support confirmed for the desired mode.
  • Publisher and platform accounts linked as required.
  • Online subscription or Game Pass requirement checked for each player.
  • Game and system updates installed.
  • Host console or PC connected reliably, preferably by Ethernet.
  • Controllers paired and assigned to separate players.
  • Microphones, headphones and Discord permissions tested.
  • A short lobby or tutorial session completed before starting a long campaign.

Bottom line

Different platforms are not automatically a barrier, but no single feature solves every game. Use the game’s own cross-play support whenever it exists. If it does not, choose the host-based feature that matches the ecosystem—Steam Remote Play Together for local PC co-op, Xbox or PS Remote Play for streaming a console session, PlayStation Share Play for supported PlayStation sharing, or Nintendo GameShare for compatible Switch sessions. Keep Discord separate as the communication layer, and verify the title’s current requirements before promising that a friend can join.
