If a Call of Duty game is not included in your Game Pass catalog, you can still play it on Xbox by buying the correct digital edition or using a compatible physical disc. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, install it, and add an eligible Game Pass subscription if you want console online multiplayer. Cloud streaming is a separate option available only for supported titles and Game Pass Ultimate members.
For the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision says the game launches as a standalone purchase on October 23, 2026. It will not join Game Pass until Holiday 2027, so playing at launch requires buying it separately.

What “not in Game Pass” actually means
Game Pass is a rotating catalog, not a license to every Xbox game. Inclusion is decided for each title, edition, platform and subscription tier. A game can be absent from one tier while available in another, or available for cloud streaming without being downloadable on every device.
When a title is outside your catalog, there are three practical possibilities:

- Buy a digital Xbox/Microsoft Store license. The game remains in the purchasing account’s library and can normally be reinstalled on compatible Xbox consoles.
- Use a compatible physical disc. The disc supplies the license check, but the console may still download an installation or compatibility update.
- Use Game Pass or cloud gaming if the exact title appears in the live catalog. Availability depends on the game, tier, region and supported device.
Do not assume that one Call of Duty release represents the whole series. Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare III and Warzone can have different catalog and platform treatment.
Option 1: Buy the digital Xbox edition
Digital purchase is the simplest route when the store lists the game for your console generation. It gives you a permanent store license rather than access that ends if a Game Pass title leaves the catalog.
Check the listing before paying
- Open the Xbox Store on your console, the Xbox app on PC, or the Microsoft Store.
- Search for the exact Call of Duty title, not just “Call of Duty.” Several editions can share similar names.
- Read the platform line. Confirm that the edition supports your Xbox generation or Windows PC as applicable.
- Check whether the listing is a full game, an add-on, a cross-generation bundle or a cosmetic pack. A bundle that names only an upgrade or expansion is not a standalone game license.
- Review the publisher, included modes and storage requirements shown on the product page, then complete the purchase with the Microsoft account you will use to play.
The official listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Digital Standard Edition identifies Activision as publisher and lists campaign, multiplayer, co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, cloud saves and Xbox capabilities. Those features describe that edition; other Call of Duty products can differ.
Install from the owning account
- On Xbox, open My games & apps, choose Full library, then open Owned games.
- Find the purchased Call of Duty title and select Install all, or choose the components you need if the installer offers campaign, multiplayer or co-op separately.
- Keep the console connected while the game applies updates. A purchase may be small compared with the final installed size because current releases download large patches and mode packs.
- Launch the game while signed in to the purchasing account. If another household account will play on the same home console, configure the purchasing account’s home Xbox setting so the console can share the license under Xbox’s account rules.
Buying digitally does not guarantee that every mode is permanently available offline. Server-dependent multiplayer, account authentication and live-service features can still require an internet connection.

Option 2: Use a compatible physical disc
A disc can be a useful alternative when a digital listing is unavailable or when you already own the game. Compatibility must be checked title by title: Xbox generation, region, disc format and backward-compatibility support all matter.
Before buying or inserting a disc
- Confirm whether the disc is for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or another platform. A disc from a different console family will not automatically work.
- Look for an official backward-compatibility designation where relevant. There is no universal historical list covering every Call of Duty release and every region.
- Check whether your console has a disc drive. A digital-only console cannot validate a physical license.
- Verify the disc’s territory and language information. Catalog and compatibility status can vary by region.
Install and play
- Insert the disc while signed in to the Xbox account that will play the game.
- Allow the console to install the required files and download any compatibility or title update.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever the console asks for the license. Installation alone does not convert the disc into a digital entitlement.
- Install only the modes you need if the game provides a content-management screen; this can reduce storage use but may remove access to a mode until it is reinstalled.
Physical ownership is tied to possession of the disc. Selling, lending or losing it removes your ability to pass the license check, even if the game remains installed.
Option 3: Check another Game Pass tier or cloud access
Before purchasing, search the live catalog for the exact title and check your subscription tier. Xbox Wire’s October 14–15, 2024 announcements documented Black Ops 6 for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while Modern Warfare III and Warzone were listed for Game Pass Ultimate cloud access. On October 25, 2024, Xbox announced cloud play for Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III and Warzone for Ultimate members on supported consoles, PCs, mobile devices and selected TVs and other devices.
Those announcements do not create a permanent entitlement for every Call of Duty title. Catalog membership can change, and cloud support is title-specific. Use the current Xbox catalog and the game’s product page immediately before subscribing or buying.

How to test cloud availability
- Sign in to the Xbox app or supported Xbox cloud-gaming interface with an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- Search the exact Call of Duty title.
- Choose Play with cloud only if that control appears. If the game offers only purchase or installation, it is not currently available to stream through your account.
- Use a supported device and a stable connection. Cloud play does not download the full game, but input delay, image quality and queue availability depend on your network and service conditions.
Cloud access is convenient for trying a supported game or playing on a device without enough storage. It is not a substitute for ownership: if the title leaves the catalog or your Ultimate subscription ends, cloud access ends as well.
Modern Warfare 4: the launch rule and 2027 timing
Activision’s October 15, 2026 announcement gives Modern Warfare 4 a specific schedule. The game launches on October 23, 2026 as a standalone release. At launch, players must purchase it separately through the Xbox Store, Xbox app on PC or Microsoft Store. Activision says it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
That statement means a Game Pass subscription cannot replace the launch purchase. If you want to play on October 23, buy the edition for your platform and install it through the account that owns it. If you are willing to wait, check the catalog again during Holiday 2027; the announced timing is a plan, not a guarantee that every edition, region or platform will be included simultaneously.

Do you need Game Pass after buying Call of Duty?
For campaign or other offline-capable content, purchasing the game is generally separate from a multiplayer subscription. For console online multiplayer, the Xbox product listing states: “Online multiplayer on console requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).” In practical terms, ownership of the game and permission to use Xbox console multiplayer are two different checks.

Subscription names and benefits can change. Check the current plan description at checkout rather than relying on an older screenshot or a past promotion.

No fixed prices are stated here because Xbox pricing, promotions, regional taxes, subscription tiers and catalog status are volatile. Check the store in your territory immediately before committing.

The game does not appear in your library
Confirm that you are signed in with the purchasing Microsoft account, not merely the account that downloaded the game. Check My games & apps > Full library > Owned games. If the purchase was made on PC, verify that the listing supports Xbox console before expecting it on the console library.

The store shows only an add-on
Return to the publisher’s main product page and look for the base game or a complete edition. Campaign packs, vault upgrades and cosmetic bundles do not necessarily include the game license.
The disc installs but the game will not start
Check the console’s disc drive, the disc region, the Xbox generation and the official backward-compatibility status. Clean the disc, restart the console and allow pending system or title updates. If the release is not supported on your Xbox model, installation cannot make it compatible.
You bought the game but online play is blocked
Verify that your account has an eligible Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription for console multiplayer. Also check for service outages, parental controls and the game’s own account requirements. Buying the game alone does not satisfy the multiplayer subscription requirement.

Cloud streaming appears only for supported titles and eligible Ultimate accounts. Confirm the exact game name, sign-in account, device support and current catalog listing. A title being downloadable through Game Pass does not automatically mean that its cloud version is available.
A second household account cannot launch the game
Digital sharing depends on the purchasing account’s home Xbox configuration. Sign in with the owner, review the home Xbox setting, then test again. A disc license instead requires the physical disc in the console.
A decision checklist
- Want to play a new release immediately? Buy the exact digital edition or a compatible disc. For Modern Warfare 4, this is the only documented launch route before Holiday 2027.
- Already subscribe to Ultimate? Search the live catalog first. Confirm whether the title is downloadable, cloud-enabled, or both.
- Only need campaign or offline content? Purchase ownership may be enough; verify the game’s offline requirements.
- Need console online multiplayer? Budget for Essential, Premium or Ultimate in addition to the game or disc.
- Considering an older release? Check Xbox generation, backward compatibility, region and whether a digital listing still exists. Do not assume every historic Call of Duty is purchasable digitally.
- Playing on a phone, browser, PC or TV? Use cloud gaming only when the exact title and device are supported, and expect network-dependent performance.
The reliable rule is simple: identify the exact Call of Duty title and edition first, then match it to a purchase, disc, catalog entry or cloud listing. Game Pass access is title- and tier-specific, while ownership and console multiplayer access remain separate decisions.
