You can play Burnout 3: Takedown online on a retail original Xbox by connecting the console to Insignia, Microsoft’s Xbox Live replacement. You need the current Xbox dashboard (System Info should show D:1.00.5960.01), a one-time Insignia console registration, an activated gamertag, and a network connection. Stock consoles use an Xbox-to-USB adapter and a compatible 4GB-or-smaller flash drive; modded consoles use the appropriate Setup Assistant package and FTP. Once registered, select Xbox Live inside Burnout 3 and use its online modes.
What Insignia restores on an original Xbox
Insignia is a free replacement for Microsoft’s discontinued original Xbox online service. It restores matchmaking, leaderboards and other Xbox Live functions for supported games, allowing a retail-era console to connect to a community-run service instead of the servers that Microsoft shut down.

Support is game-specific. The current supported-games directory is the authority for what works; its contents and live player counts can change. A 2026 snapshot of Insignia’s homepage showed 213 supported games, but that number is not a permanent catalog size. The directory lists Burnout 3: Takedown (serial EA-091, title ID 4541005B) and Burnout 2: Point of Impact. Check the directory for the exact release you own before preparing another title.

The console must be a retail Xbox. Insignia does not support devkit or debug BIOS systems. A modded machine also cannot connect while using a nulled hard-drive key; restore a valid key through the mod’s documented recovery process first.
For stock installation, the flash drive must be both Xbox-compatible and no larger than 4GB. Many modern USB drives are not recognized by the original Xbox, so compatibility matters more than capacity alone. The adapter connects the console’s controller port to the USB drive; the FATX tool formats or transfers the package in the format the dashboard can read.
Check and update the Xbox dashboard
Verify the installed version
- Power on the Xbox without launching the game.
- Open Settings.
- Select System Info.
- Confirm that the dashboard reports
D:1.00.5960.01.
This version check is essential. If the dashboard is older, the console may not show an Xbox Live option or may fail during registration even when the network cable is working.

Update a stock console
On an unmodified system, insert a supported Xbox game, start it, and choose Xbox Live when the game offers that option. The original update path can install the required dashboard. Return to Settings → System Info afterward and verify the version again rather than assuming the update completed.

Do not proceed to console registration until the version is correct. Updating the dashboard does not itself register the machine with Insignia; it only supplies the Xbox software that the connection process needs.
Install Insignia on a stock Xbox
Prepare the transfer media
- Obtain the latest stock Setup Assistant package from Insignia.
- Connect an Xbox-compatible USB flash drive of 4GB or less to the Xbox through an Xbox-to-USB adapter.
- Use a FATX-compatible storage tool to copy the Setup Assistant files to the drive in the layout specified by the package.
- Connect the adapter and drive to the Xbox, then use the dashboard’s memory-management screens to access the copied package.
The stock procedure uses a one-time exploit to start the assistant. Follow the package’s included file layout exactly; placing the executable in an arbitrary folder can leave the dashboard unable to see it.
Run the one-time exploit and assistant
Launch the copied package through the stock dashboard’s memory interface. The Setup Assistant is a small application that registers the console with Insignia. It is not a replacement dashboard and does not permanently convert the Xbox into a different operating system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the assistant opens, choose Register. Insignia’s guide says most users only need to press Register and wait for the confirmation message. Leave the network connected during this operation and do not power off while the assistant is communicating with the service.

Install Insignia on a modded Xbox
Use a compatible mod configuration
Softmodded and hardmodded retail consoles can work, but the mod must allow Xbox Live networking. Older softmods or BIOS configurations that block Xbox Live may need an upgrade or a configuration change. Devkit/debug BIOSes and consoles are outside Insignia’s supported hardware.
Transfer and launch the package
- Download the Setup Assistant package intended for your modded configuration.
- Connect to the Xbox with an FTP client.
- Copy the package to the location used by your homebrew environment.
- Launch the supplied
default.xbethrough the normal homebrew menu or file browser. - Select Register and wait for the confirmation.
If the hard drive has a nulled HDD key, registration cannot complete until a valid key is restored. Treat that as a console-modification problem, not an Insignia account problem; repair the key and then rerun the assistant.
Register the console and create an Insignia gamertag
Complete console registration first
The assistant’s registration binds the physical Xbox to Insignia. Exit only after it reports success. A successful registration is required before the dashboard signup flow can activate an account.
Run the network test
- Exit Setup Assistant.
- Open the Xbox Dashboard’s Network Settings.
- Run the connection test.
- Confirm that the console reaches the network and that the test does not report DNS hijacking.
If the test identifies DNS hijacking, use Insignia’s documented local insigniaDNS workaround. The guide lists primary DNS 46.101.64.175 and suggests 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 as the secondary server. Enter the values in the Xbox network configuration, save, and rerun the test. A DNS change addresses name resolution; it will not repair an outdated dashboard, unsupported BIOS, invalid HDD key or bad Ethernet link.

Request the subscription code
- On a modern device, register an email address on
insignia.live. - Complete the site’s CAPTCHA.
- Wait for the email containing the code used by the Xbox dashboard signup flow.
The service is free. The dashboard may display a purchase-style confirmation screen showing £0.00; that amount indicates no charge for activation, not a recurring subscription price.
Activate the gamertag on the Xbox
- Open the Xbox Live signup flow from the dashboard or a supported game.
- Select your region.
- Accept the displayed terms.
- Choose an available gamertag.
- Enter the emailed subscription code.
- Complete the activation screens and return to the dashboard.
Use a gamertag that is available in the service’s current account system. The console registration and the gamertag activation are separate checkpoints: the first identifies the Xbox, while the second creates the player identity used by games.
Launch Burnout 3 online
Enter the game’s Xbox Live mode
- Insert the original Xbox disc for Burnout 3: Takedown and start the game.
- Choose Xbox Live from the main menu.
- Sign in with the activated gamertag when prompted.
- Select the game’s matchmaking or other online mode.
- Join an available session or host one for invited players.
The original Burnout 3: Takedown manual describes online play as supporting “up to seven players” in the game’s online modes. That is the title’s designed capacity, not a promise that seven people will be available in a particular lobby.
Plan for changing player activity
Insignia’s live pages can show zero active Burnout 3 players even though the game remains supported. Activity varies by time zone, day and region. If public matchmaking is empty, arrange a session with friends or look for community events rather than treating an empty lobby as a setup failure.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Peer-to-peer networking makes latency important. Ethernet is preferable to a wireless adapter because it removes one common source of interference and delay. A wired connection cannot create opponents who are not online, but it can make an existing session more stable.

Use the same checks before attempting any title other than Burnout 3: Takedown:
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact release | The regional release or title identifier appears in Insignia’s current supported-games directory | Support can depend on the specific title and release, not merely a similar name |
| Online mode | The game includes the mode you want and states its player capacity | Different games expose matchmaking, ranked play, co-op or leaderboards differently |
| Current activity | Recent live player counts or a scheduled community session | A supported game can still have no public players when you search |
| Extra files | Any required downloadable content, title update or game-specific setup noted by Insignia | A correctly registered console may still fail if a title expects files you do not have |
| Mod compatibility | Your softmod, hardmod and BIOS permit Xbox Live networking | Unsupported BIOS types or blocked services prevent connection before the game starts |
Burnout 2: Point of Impact is also listed as supported. Its online behavior and player capacity are separate from Burnout 3; verify the entry for that game rather than assuming the two releases have identical modes.

There is no Xbox Live option
- Open Settings → System Info and verify
D:1.00.5960.01. - If the version is older, boot a supported game and select Xbox Live to trigger the stock update path.
- Restart the console and check the version again before rerunning Setup Assistant.
Setup Assistant registration fails
- Confirm that the assistant itself reported a completed registration rather than merely opening.
- Run the dashboard network test and correct cable, router or DNS errors first.
- On a modded Xbox, verify that the BIOS is a supported retail configuration and that Xbox Live blocking has been removed.
- Check for a nulled HDD key; Insignia cannot register the console until a valid key is restored.
The DNS hijacking check fails
- Apply the documented local
insigniaDNSworkaround. - Set primary DNS to
46.101.64.175. - Use
8.8.8.8or1.1.1.1as secondary DNS. - Save the network profile and run the test again.
The match is slow or disconnects
- Use Ethernet instead of a wireless adapter.
- Reduce competing traffic on the home network while playing.
- Check NAT and router latency; original Xbox Live games use peer-to-peer connections, so the host and every participant affect the session.
- Try a different time or arrange a private session if the problem is an unstable public lobby.
The game still cannot connect after account activation
- Confirm the title is currently listed, including the exact regional release where the directory distinguishes versions.
- Sign out and back in from the dashboard, then start the game again.
- Check whether the title requires downloadable content or a title update.
- For a modded Xbox, return to the mod documentation and confirm that its current dashboard and BIOS configuration permits Xbox Live.
There are no opponents
An empty lobby is not proof that Insignia is offline. Supported status and current activity are different things. Check live activity at another time, invite friends, or coordinate a community session. Burnout 3 can support up to seven players by design, but the number present at any moment changes continuously.
What Insignia can and cannot guarantee
- Supported: retail original Xbox consoles, plus many softmodded and hardmodded retail systems that meet the compatibility requirements.
- Not supported: devkit/debug BIOS consoles and systems with an invalid or nulled HDD key.
- Available for Burnout 3: Xbox Live matchmaking and the game’s online modes when the console, account and network are correctly configured.
- Not guaranteed: a full lobby, a fixed player count, identical support for every regional disc, or a timetable for adding unsupported games.
For the most reliable recommendation, verify four things immediately before playing: the exact game entry, its online mode and capacity, current player activity, and any title-specific files or mod requirements. Those checks distinguish a service-side or population issue from a console setup error.
