Yes, both games can still be made to run on some modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, but an untouched disc installation is not a dependable solution. This distinction matters because replacing a failed SafeDisc check with an unofficial file is not the same as installing an official update. Record which files you apply and in what order; that makes it possible to undo a change instead of rebuilding the installation from scratch.
Prepare the PC and preserve your copy
- Use a legitimately owned copy. Keep the original discs, installer files or a disc image in a location you control. Do not assume a damaged or incomplete download can be repaired safely by adding random files from the internet.
- Back up before patching. Copy the entire installed game folder to another drive or archive. For Black & White 2, make one backup after the clean install and another after the official v1.2 update, before trying v1.42.
- Plan for optical hardware. If the computer has no built-in drive, an external USB DVD drive is the supported practical way to read an owned boxed copy. Connect it before launching the installer and let Windows finish detecting it.
- Choose a writable location. When the installer permits it, use a folder outside protected system locations such as
C:Program Files. This reduces permission conflicts when an older game writes configuration or save files. It does not bypass SafeDisc. - Use administrator rights only where needed. Run the installer with an administrator account, and use Run as administrator for the game executable when the community troubleshooting instructions call for it. Administrator elevation is an operational workaround, not a replacement for an incompatible DRM driver.
- Close overlays and injectors while testing. A clean launch test is easier to interpret when recording software, game overlays and graphics tweakers are not changing the process. Re-enable them one at a time only after the game is stable.
Install and troubleshoot the original Black & White (2001)
1. Install from the owned media
- Insert the original disc, or connect the external USB DVD drive that contains it.
- Run the installer from the disc with administrator rights. If Windows displays a compatibility warning, keep the installation files and note the exact message rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- Install to a simple, writable folder outside protected system directories when the installer allows that choice.
- Before copying any community files, launch the unmodified installation once. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, a failure at this stage is consistent with the documented SafeDisc incompatibility.
2. Deal with a launch failure realistically
If the game installs but will not start, do not treat repeated administrator prompts as proof that the disc is defective. SafeDisc is the primary known blocker on current Windows versions. The original protection expects a driver model that modern Windows no longer supports, so changing a shortcut or reinstalling the same files may have no effect.
A separate legacy Windows environment is the conservative fallback when native execution remains unstable. The available documentation does not provide a tested virtual-machine recipe or a performance guarantee, so consider that an alternative strategy rather than a prescriptive fix. Keep your original media and backups; do not modify the only copy while experimenting.

3. Work through the documented community symptoms
Community troubleshooting for the 2001 game covers several problems beyond the DRM check. These entries should be understood as community guidance, not a promise of official vendor support.
- Missing
p5dll.dll: confirm that the file is present in the installed game files and that security software has not quarantined it. If the file is absent, restore it from your owned installer or reinstall from the original media rather than downloading an unverified DLL from a random site. - Bad textures or landscapes: verify that the game is using the intended graphics device and that the installation is complete. Install Black & White 2 with the official patch chain
1. Start with a full installed copy
The archived Lionhead v1.2 readme states that a full installed copy is required. Install the base game completely from your legitimately owned media before applying an update. A partial installation, a damaged disc or an interrupted copy can make a later patch report a misleading error.

2. Install official v1.1 first
- Finish the base installation and close the game.
- Run the official v1.1 updater with administrator rights if Windows requests elevation.
- Launch the game once, if possible, and confirm that the executable still starts before adding another patch.
3. Install official v1.2 second
Do not reverse the order. The Lionhead readme states: "Patch 1.1 will need to be installed before updating to Patch 1.2." Applying v1.2 to an unpatched base installation can leave you with an incomplete or unusable update. Keep the v1.1 and v1.2 installers with your backup so you can reproduce the same sequence after a failed experiment.
4. Know what v1.2 changes
The archived v1.2 notes describe several functional and compatibility changes:
- A way to skip the tutorial land.
- A confirmation screen for graphics resolution.
- Improved graphics-card detection.
- Support for systems without audio.
- Interface and lighting changes, along with additional fixes.
The same readme reports approximately 27% and 24% gains on two named legacy ATI test cards, an X850 XT and a 9800 Pro. Those are historical Lionhead test results from 2005, not measurements of current GPUs, and they should not be used as a present-day performance prediction.

When and how to consider the v1.42 fan patch
Use v1.42 only after the official v1.1 and v1.2 updates. The community patch is documented as removing SafeDisc DRM and adding fixes for modern-system hardware detection. Microsoft Learn Community explicitly notes that it is not an official patch and that it includes a no-CD modification.
- Verify that the clean Black & White 2 installation is backed up.

- Obtain the fan patch from a source you can evaluate and retain a copy of the exact archive you used. The available documentation does not establish a single universally reliable download location or guarantee behavior on every Windows build.

Do not assume that a listing, repack or abandonware download is authorized merely because it contains the game files.
