Yes. Insert the imported PS5 game disc, let the console install it, and launch it while signed in to your normal local PSN account. The disc itself is the base game. The important restriction applies to downloadable content: Sony says a disc must be licensed for the same country/region as your account for PlayStation Store add-ons and in-game currency to work. Your PSN account’s country/region cannot be changed after the account is created.
What works with an imported PS5 disc
A physical imported PS5 game is normally usable as a disc-based product on a local account. The PS5 manual lists PlayStation 5 format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs as playable media, so the console can read and install a genuine PS5-format disc from another market.

That does not make every associated service region-free. The disc and the Store account are separate licensing layers:
- Base game on the disc: Install it from the PS5 disc drive and start it with your existing local PSN account.
- Downloadable content: Add-ons, expansion packs and similar Store items may require the disc’s licensed country/region to match the account’s country/region.
- In-game currency: Sony applies the same region-matching warning to virtual currency.
- Voucher codes: A voucher must match the country/region of the account that redeems it.
- Online features: Multiplayer access can require PlayStation Plus, with Console Sharing and Offline Play affecting which account can use an eligible subscription on that PS5.
Therefore, importing a disc is usually straightforward if you only want the physical game. It becomes a compatibility decision when you expect to buy Store content, redeem a code, or use an online service.

Why the disc’s region matters
“Imported” describes where you bought the game, not necessarily which language or features it contains. The useful identifier is the country/region for which the disc is licensed. Sony advises buyers to check the small-print marking on the front or back of the box, or ask the retailer for that license information.
Do this before opening the package. A listing that merely says “Japanese,” “UK,” “US,” or “Asian” is not enough to establish Store compatibility unless the specific licensed market is clear. Keep the box and any code card until you have confirmed that the disc installs and that every included entitlement can be redeemed.

Check your local PSN account’s country/region
Sony does not provide a later country switch. You can inspect the setting before buying an import:
- Open PlayStation Account Management in a browser and sign in.
- Choose Your Information.
- Open Residential Address.
- Read the country/region shown for the account.
The account’s country/region is selected during account creation and cannot be edited after creation. Changing the console’s language, time zone, shipping address or payment card does not change this account setting.
Record the result alongside the disc region. For example, a disc licensed for one market and an account registered in another are a warning combination for Store purchases, even if the base game installs successfully.

Install and play the imported game with your existing account
Use this procedure when your goal is simply to play the physical game:
- Confirm the disc license. Read the country/region marking on the package and keep any inserts or voucher cards.
- Start the PS5. Sign in to the local PSN account you normally use. An account does not need to be created in the disc’s market merely to insert the disc.
- Insert the disc. Use the PS5 model with a disc drive. The console will recognize a PS5-format game disc as playable media.
- Allow installation to finish. The console installs the game from the disc; follow the on-screen prompts and leave the disc available because a physical game generally uses it as the license to launch.
- Apply any offered game update. Treat an update as separate from a Store add-on. If the game presents an optional purchase or code, do not redeem it until you have checked the region.
- Launch the game. Start it from the local account’s game hub and test the features you actually intend to use.
This procedure establishes that the base disc is usable. It does not prove that a later expansion, currency pack or voucher will attach to the same installation.
DLC, add-ons and in-game currency are the main risk
Sony’s support guidance states: “Game discs must be licensed for use in the same country/region as your account for you to use PlayStation Store content (such as add-ons or in-game currency).” In practical terms, a Store item bought from your local account may fail to recognize an imported disc when those licensed regions differ.
Physical and downloadable content should be treated as different products:
- Content already included on the disc is part of the imported edition you purchased.
- An expansion, season pass, costume pack or other add-on downloaded from a Store is licensed separately.
- Virtual currency is not interchangeable merely because the game title is the same. The Store listing, disc edition and account region all matter.
Do not buy DLC first and hope the game will connect it later. Check the disc region and the Store account region before paying. If the regions do not match, Sony’s rule means compatibility is not assured; the exact behavior can also depend on the publisher and the individual title.

Voucher codes need a matching account
Imported editions often include a printed code for an item, bonus or Store credit. The code is not made universal by being included in a PS5 package. Sony states that voucher activation requires the voucher’s country/region to match the account country/region.

- Read the market or country printed on the voucher or packaging.
- Compare it with the account country/region shown under Your Information and Residential Address.
- Do not assume a code can be transferred to another account after redemption.
- Keep proof of purchase and the code card if the retailer’s description was unclear.
If the regions differ, stop before redeeming. A failed attempt does not turn the local account into the voucher’s region, and the account’s country cannot subsequently be edited.
When a matching-region account may be necessary
If the imported game’s add-on or voucher is essential, you may need an account whose country/region matches the disc’s license. PlayStation account creation requires selecting a country/region, and that selection is permanent for that account.
A second account is not a guarantee that every feature will work. Check these title-specific variables first:
- Publisher rules: The game maker may impose additional restrictions beyond Sony’s Store licensing rule.
- Payment method: A matching account may still require a payment method or Store credit accepted in that market.
- Language support: The imported edition may contain different spoken languages, text options or subtitles from your local release.
- Save compatibility: Do not assume saves or entitlements move freely between regional editions or accounts.
- Online services: Server availability and account requirements can vary by title and market.
Create or use another account only for a concrete need, such as redeeming a matching-region code. It is not a workaround for changing the region of your established local account; that account remains fixed.

Use PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play carefully
PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play is found at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other. Sony says this setting shares purchases and some subscription benefits with other users on that PS5.
Sharing can help when different accounts use the same console, but it does not erase regional licensing. A matching-region account may be able to share an eligible purchase on the designated PS5, while a mismatched add-on can still fail to recognize the imported disc. Activate sharing only on the console you control and follow the on-screen account prompts.
Keep the physical disc available when launching the base game. Console sharing does not convert a disc license into a digital license or remove the need for the disc installation.

Playing an imported disc and playing it online are separate checks. PlayStation’s terms say online multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription for the relevant account, subject to the Console Sharing and Offline Play arrangement.
Before buying an import for online play, verify:
- Whether the title still operates its online service in the market you intend to use.
- Which account will sign in for multiplayer.
- Whether that account has PlayStation Plus or can use the subscription through the PS5’s sharing setting.
- Whether the publisher requires a separate account, code or agreement.
A disc can install and launch correctly while an online mode remains unavailable because of subscription, service or publisher requirements. Test the base game first, then check the game’s own online instructions before purchasing extras.

What to do when something fails

Common buying scenarios
You only want the campaign on the disc
This is the lowest-risk case. Verify that the package contains a PS5-format disc, install it, and launch it on your local account. You can decide later whether optional Store content is worth the region complications.
You want an expansion or season pass
Identify the disc’s licensed country/region before buying the expansion. A local Store purchase is not automatically compatible with an imported disc. Buy only when the regions match or when the publisher explicitly confirms another supported arrangement.
The box includes a bonus voucher
Check the voucher market before opening it. If it does not match your account, the code may not redeem, and the account cannot be converted afterward.

Decide which account owns the Store purchase and review Settings > Users and Accounts > Other for Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sharing may extend some purchases or subscription benefits to users on that PS5, but it does not remove the imported disc’s region requirements.
A practical decision process before you order
- Write down your goal. Is it the physical base game, downloadable expansions, virtual currency, a voucher, online multiplayer, or all of these?
- Identify the disc license. Use the box marking or obtain the information from the retailer.
- Check your account region. In Account Management, open Your Information > Residential Address.
- Match each purchase. Compare the disc with every add-on, currency pack and voucher you plan to use.
- Confirm account and payment requirements. A matching-region account may still have publisher, language, save, service or payment limitations.
- Plan online access. Check PlayStation Plus and whether Console Sharing and Offline Play applies to your setup.
- Keep the evidence. Save the listing, region marking, receipt and voucher packaging until installation and redemption are complete.
This process prevents the most expensive mistake: discovering only after purchase that the base game works but the content you actually wanted is licensed for another market.

Bottom line
An imported PS5 disc can be installed and played on your normal local PSN account. Treat the disc as the base product and Store content as a separate regional license: DLC, add-ons, in-game currency and vouchers are the parts most likely to fail when the disc’s licensed country/region does not match the account. Check those regions before buying, because Sony does not let you change an account’s country/region after creation.
