To avoid a Houston construction delay, check Houston TranStar’s construction schedule for your route and departure window, read the listed lane impacts and detour, then compare the affected corridor with alternatives on the traffic map. Recheck just before leaving: TranStar warns that closures can change because of weather, emergency work or other events.
Plan around the trip you actually need to make
There is no universally best route around Houston road construction. The useful alternative depends on your origin, destination, direction of travel and departure time. Set those details first, including a realistic departure window, so you can distinguish a closure that affects your trip from one that does not.

Check Houston TranStar’s construction schedule
Open the Houston TranStar Road Construction schedule and choose the time span that covers your drive. The schedule offers views for the next 24 hours, next 72 hours, weekends and custom dates.
For each relevant listing, look beyond the project name. Check where the closure is, which lanes or ramps are affected, when it applies, how long it is scheduled to last and whether an official detour is specified. A full closure or ramp restriction can rule out a route even if the main lanes appear usable; a lane closure may instead mean reduced capacity on a corridor you can still take.

Compare routes on the traffic map
Use the Houston TranStar traffic map to examine the affected corridor and plausible alternatives. Turn on the construction and road-closure layers, then use the route builder and speeds or travel times to compare options. The map can also show incidents, cameras, message signs, weather radar and roadway flooding risk, which can help explain delays that are not caused by construction alone.
Compare options using the same departure window. Check whether a closure blocks a main lane or ramp, how many lanes are affected, whether the scheduled time overlaps your trip, whether the detour requires frontage-road or ramp movements, and what current speeds and other disruptions appear on the map. These details can help you make a better-informed choice, but they do not establish that one route will always be faster.

Follow the posted detour for a full closure
When the schedule gives a specific detour, follow its instructions and on-road signs rather than assuming a consumer navigation app has accounted for every local ramp restriction or detour. TranStar listings may specify a sequence involving frontage roads, particular exits or alternative ramps. Read the full sequence before driving so you know where to leave the freeway and where the listing says to re-enter.

If an update is needed while the vehicle is moving, have a passenger check it; the driver should follow posted signs and traffic control, not interact with a phone.

A dated example: SH-249 at Louetta
As listed on Houston TranStar’s schedule on October 4, 2026 (Central Time), a southbound SH-249 closure at Louetta was scheduled through 5:00 a.m. Monday, October 5. The listed detour directed traffic to exit at Chasewood Park Drive/Cypresswood Drive, use the frontage road and return to the main lanes at the next available on-ramp. TranStar said this arrangement was designed to keep traffic out of signalized intersections and maintain simple on-and-off freeway movement. This was a short-term listing, not evergreen route advice; confirm the schedule before relying on it.
