Sony has published the PS5’s CPU specification, but the sources available here do not establish a PS6 CPU design or game-performance target. That means a precise PS5-versus-PS6 CPU comparison is not yet possible. A faster future CPU could help games that are limited by processor work, but it would not automatically make every game run faster or look better.
What the PS5 CPU specification confirms
Sony’s March 2020 hardware announcement identifies the PS5 CPU as an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, running at a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. Sony also lists an RDNA 2-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with 448 GB/s bandwidth, and an 825 GB SSD with 5.5 GB/s raw read bandwidth. These are system specifications, not a promise that the CPU alone determines a game’s frame rate or visual quality. Sony’s PS5 hardware announcement

Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual independently describes a custom single-chip processor with an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, 8 cores and 16 threads, alongside GDDR6 memory. The manual also gives storage details for that model family and notes that information may change without notice. Those model-specific storage details do not change the CPU comparison. The cited sources do not confirm the PS6’s CPU microarchitecture, core or thread count, clock speed, cache, power target, or performance. In particular, they do not establish that the console will use Zen 5 or Zen 6, or support a numerical performance-gain estimate. Until Sony publishes hardware specifications and independent game testing becomes available, those details should not be treated as settled facts.

A 2025 PC Gamer report discusses Mark Cerny and AMD executive Jack Huynh talking about future Sony/AMD technologies, including Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression. The report relates these technologies to graphics processing, ray tracing or path tracing, and memory bandwidth; it does not give a PS6 CPU specification. How a CPU architecture improvement could affect games
More CPU throughput could give developers more room for work such as simulation, artificial intelligence, animation and managing game systems. It could be most noticeable when a game is CPU-limited: in that case, the processor is a constraint on performance, and additional headroom might help sustain a frame-rate target or reduce slowdowns.

That is a conditional possibility, not a PS6-specific promise. The outcome would depend on the eventual console design, the game’s workload and engine, graphics-processor and memory limits, power and thermal constraints, and how developers use the available resources. A CPU change by itself does not guarantee higher frame rates, better graphics or a visible improvement in every game.
Why AMD’s Zen 2 IPC figure is not a PS5-to-PS6 forecast
AMD’s architecture page lists an approximately 15% IPC improvement for consumer Ryzen Zen 2 over the prior generation. IPC means instructions per clock: it describes work completed per clock under the conditions of that comparison. AMD does not present the figure as a PS5 benchmark, and it does not predict how much faster PS6 games would run. It also cannot be carried forward as an expected PS6 gain. Compatibility is also a software and game-specific question
Sony says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5, and that selected titles may benefit from Game Boost with higher or smoother frame rates. Sony also notes possible errors, unexpected behavior and feature limitations, and lists PS4-only exceptions. This shows why compatibility and game behavior involve more than hardware alone; it does not establish what Sony will support on a PS6. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance

A meaningful comparison will need confirmed details for both systems and game-level results. The useful measures would include CPU architecture and configuration, frame-rate consistency in comparable games, whether those games are CPU-limited, and the contributions of graphics hardware, memory, power, thermals and software. A rumored architecture name or core count cannot substitute for those specifications and tests.
