How to Plan a Detour Around an Interstate Road Closure

When an interstate closes, start with official DOT or 511 information, follow posted detour signs, compare current routes and verify restrictions for your vehicle.

Check the affected state department of transportation (DOT) or its official 511 service first, then follow posted closure controls and detour signs. Confirm the interstate, direction, closure location and extent; compare current options before leaving; and check again only when it is safe to do so. There is no universally fastest detour or nationally recommended detour distance—the right route depends on live conditions, local restrictions and your vehicle.

Where can I check if an interstate is closed?

Start with the affected state DOT’s traveler-information site or official 511 service. Look for the interstate number, direction of travel, nearest exit or mile marker, lanes affected, whether the road is fully closed or merely delayed, the notice’s update time and any estimated reopening. Treat reopening estimates as provisional.

In the United States, 511 is a three-digit travel-information number designated by the FCC in 2000. The Federal Highway Administration describes it as a source of current travel conditions, but states and local jurisdictions implement services independently; there is no federal requirement for every jurisdiction to provide the same features. An app, map, phone line or alert system may not be available everywhere. See FHWA’s overview of 511 and check the local agency’s own information for the specific closure.

Electronic signs, agency notices, official social or traffic alerts and 511 may complement one another. Notices can vary in detail: FHWA’s review of nonrecurring-event information notes that some example messages may omit update status or an alternate route. If the first alert is brief, look for fuller details from the responsible DOT.

How do I find the intended detour?

Read the closure notice and follow the detour route designated by the agency. At the closure, obey signs, barriers and other traffic-control devices rather than trying to continue onto a closed road. The federal MUTCD 11th Edition, Part 6, dated December 2023, includes a typical road-closure application with an off-site detour and says regulatory traffic-control devices should be modified as needed for the detour’s duration.

Official signs and the agency’s event-specific directions are the dependable guide to the closure itself. GPS directions can be useful for seeing traffic and navigating an open route, but they should not override a closure, a posted detour or a restriction. For an example of how agencies have paired information channels, FHWA’s account of the I-5 “Boat Section” work describes a motorist-information strategy: FHWA’s I-5 project information.

How should I compare alternate routes?

Before committing to a route, compare the agency’s recommended detour with any plausible alternatives using current information. Do not assume a route that looks shorter on a map will be quicker or suitable.

  • Total travel time and uncertainty: Compare current estimates, not just distance. Conditions can change while you travel.
  • Traffic and incidents: Check for congestion, crashes or other closures along the alternative.
  • Continuity: Confirm the route connects back to your destination without sending you toward the closure or through another blocked segment.
  • Official direction and restrictions: Follow signed routing and check local restrictions relevant to your vehicle and trip.
  • Time of travel: A route’s delay may differ by time of day or day of week.
  • Whether to drive at all: For a commute, consider transit, carpooling, changing departure time, working remotely or postponing a nonessential trip.

A specific response illustrates why time-based comparison can help without promising a universal result. After a crack was found during a May 2021 inspection, the Hernando de Soto Bridge on I-40 was closed for emergency repairs. FHWA’s 2022 case report says Tennessee DOT used existing intelligent transportation systems and crowdsourced data, published estimated average delays by time of day and day of week, and promoted a preferred alternate route through commonly used in-vehicle navigation systems. FHWA reports that TDOT attributed a “40-percent reduction in peak period traffic delays within days” to that response. That outcome belongs to this particular closure; it is not a general prediction for other detours. Read FHWA’s 2022 Urban Congestion Trends report.

How much extra time should I allow?

Use the latest local estimates for your route and departure time, and allow for uncertainty rather than adding a fixed number of minutes or miles. The sources do not establish a nationally applicable travel-time savings figure or generic detour distance. A local estimate may change as traffic and response conditions change, so check the notice’s update time and revise your plan when new information is available.

When should I check again, and how can I avoid unsafe rerouting?

Check before departure and again at a safe stop if conditions or agency updates warrant it. If you are already driving, do not read alerts or change your route while moving. Ask a passenger to check, use a voice service where appropriate, or pull over somewhere safe. The Bay Area 511 FAQ gives similar regional advice: 511 SF Bay FAQs.

For trips in the San Francisco Bay Area, local emergency guidance also recommends preparing backup options and checking for altered routes, added transit service, relocated stops or shuttles. Elsewhere, consult the local transit agency and DOT because services and advisories vary by region. 511 SF Bay emergency guidance.

What if my vehicle or trip has special requirements?

A route that works for a passenger car may not work for a truck, RV, hazardous-materials load, oversized vehicle or traveler with mobility or access needs. The national guidance cited here does not provide a universal restriction checklist. Confirm local route restrictions and service availability with the responsible DOT or other relevant agency before taking an alternate route. If a suitable route or service is not clear, do not assume a navigation app has accounted for your needs.
