To place a stop-loss order for an Indian stock, open your broker’s order ticket, select the correct exchange, side and quantity, then choose either SL (stop-loss limit) or SL-M (stop-loss market) where that order type is supported. Enter a trigger price; for an SL order, also enter a limit price. Submit the order and verify that it is accepted and visible as pending. A stop-loss reduces risk, but it never guarantees that your shares will sell at your chosen price—or at all.
What a stop-loss order does on an Indian exchange
A stop-loss order is held in a stop-loss book rather than being immediately exposed to the regular market. The exchange waits for the trigger condition. For a sell stop, the order triggers when the last traded price (LTP) reaches or falls below your trigger. For a buy stop, it triggers when the LTP reaches or rises above your trigger. After that event, the order is released into the regular lot book as either a limit order or a market order, depending on the type you selected.

That distinction matters because placing the order does not mean a sale has occurred. Before the trigger, the order is dormant. After the trigger, it still has to find a counterparty (for a limit order) or available liquidity (for a market order). A price gap, trading halt, thin order book or exchange rejection can leave the position open.

Protecting a long holding
If you own shares and want protection against a decline, place a sell stop-loss. The trigger is normally below the current market price. When the LTP reaches or falls through that level, the exchange releases your sell order.

Covering a short position
If you are short and need to buy back the shares when the price rises, place a buy stop-loss. The trigger is normally above the current market price. It activates when the LTP reaches or exceeds that level.
Always check the position quantity and product type in the ticket. A sell order for more shares than you hold can create or enlarge a short position if your account and product permit it; a buy order for the wrong quantity can leave part of a short uncovered.
SL and SL-M: the practical difference
| Characteristic | SL (stop-loss limit) | SL-M (stop-loss market) |
|---|---|---|
| Prices entered | Trigger price and limit price | Trigger price only |
| What happens at trigger | Releases a limit order at your specified limit | Releases a market order when supported |
| Main advantage | Controls the worst acceptable execution price | Prioritises execution over price control |
| Main failure mode | Can remain unfilled if the market moves past the limit | Can fill at a much worse price in a fast or thin market |
| Options availability | Available structure for options where SL-M is not offered | NSE has discontinued SL-M for options |
An SL order becomes a normal limit order after its trigger. A sell limit generally needs to be below the sell trigger so it can trade through ordinary downward movement; a buy limit generally needs to be above the buy trigger. The exact tick-size, price-band and distance rules are controlled by the exchange and broker, so the live ticket is authoritative.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSL-M has no limit price. Once triggered, it seeks the best available prices in the order book. In a liquid stock this may be close to the trigger; during a sharp move, a gap or a thinly traded period, the fill can be substantially different. Since NSE no longer permits SL-M for options, an options trader must use an SL-limit arrangement and accept the possibility of a non-execution.
How to place the order in a broker’s app or website
- Open the order ticket. Use the broker’s buy/sell screen for the exact security. Confirm the symbol, whether you are using NSE or BSE, the product type (such as delivery or an intraday product), and the quantity. Broker labels and available order types can change.
- Select the correct side. Choose Sell to protect shares you own, or Buy to cover a short position. Check that the quantity matches the exposure you intend to protect.
- Choose the order type. Select SL when you want a trigger plus a price boundary. Select SL-M only if the broker and the particular segment currently support it. Do not assume that an order type available for equities is available for options or every product.
- Enter the trigger price. For a protective sell, the trigger is ordinarily below the current quote. For a protective buy, it is ordinarily above the current quote. The exchange uses the LTP, not merely the displayed bid or ask, to evaluate the trigger.
- Enter a limit price for SL. Leave enough room between trigger and limit for normal price movement while preserving the price boundary you can accept. A sell limit is usually below its trigger; a buy limit is usually above its trigger. The ticket will enforce the applicable tick and validation rules.
- Set validity and review funds. Choose the validity option offered by the broker, review margin or available funds, and check any product-specific restrictions. Validity names, retention periods and margin treatment are broker- and segment-dependent.
- Submit and verify the status. Confirm that the broker reports the order as accepted and shows it as pending, triggered or filled—not rejected. Record the order ID if you need to contact support.
- Monitor the position after activation. A trigger can produce a partial fill, an open limit order or no fill during a gap or halt. Recheck the order book and net position, then cancel and replace an open order only in accordance with your broker’s rules and your risk plan.
Where exactly do the trigger and limit prices go?
The trigger price is the level that wakes the order. It is not necessarily the execution price. For an SL order, the limit price is the price attached to the order after activation; it defines the least favourable price at which you are willing to trade.

| Position | Order side | Typical trigger relationship | Typical SL limit relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long shares | Sell | Below the current market | Below the trigger |
| Short shares | Buy | Above the current market | Above the trigger |
For example, NSE’s worked example uses a stop-loss buy with a trigger of ₹93 and a limit of ₹95. While the market is at ₹90, the order remains dormant. When the market reaches or exceeds ₹93, it is released as a buy limit order at ₹95. This example illustrates the sequence; it is not a recommendation for any security.
If you enter a sell limit above its trigger, or a buy limit below its trigger, the order may not behave as intended and can be rejected or sit without a realistic chance of execution. Read the price-direction warning displayed by your broker before submitting.
How to choose a responsible trigger
There is no exchange-mandated stop-loss percentage or universal rupee distance for Indian stocks. The level is an investor-specific risk decision. A useful process is to start with the maximum rupee loss you can accept, then account for position size, volatility, liquidity and technically meaningful price areas.
Start with the loss you can afford
For a long position, an approximate planned loss before costs is:
(entry price − sell trigger) × number of shares
For a short position, use:
(buy trigger − entry price) × number of shares
Include brokerage, taxes and slippage in your own calculation. If the acceptable loss is too large for the chosen trigger, reduce the quantity rather than moving the stop to a level that defeats its purpose.

Allow for ordinary volatility
A trigger placed inside the stock’s normal noise can activate on a routine fluctuation. Review recent volatility and nearby support or resistance, but treat those observations as risk-management inputs—not as a guaranteed forecast. A highly volatile or illiquid stock generally needs more room than a stable, heavily traded one, or a smaller position size.

Check liquidity and the spread
Look at the depth and typical trading activity. A wide spread or sparse order book increases the difference between the trigger and eventual fill. For an SL-limit order, too little distance can leave the released order behind the market; for SL-M, the same conditions can create substantial price slippage.
What happens in a gap, halt or fast market?
Overnight or intraday gap
If a stock opens below a protective sell trigger, the first available trades may already be beneath both the trigger and your limit. An SL-limit order can then remain unfilled because buyers are not offering your limit price. An SL-M order, where permitted, seeks execution at available prices but can fill far below the trigger. The trigger is an activation condition, not a guaranteed exit price.
Partial execution
When only part of your quantity is available at acceptable prices, an SL order may fill partially and leave the balance open. Check the remaining quantity rather than assuming the entire position was closed.
Trading halt or illiquidity
No order can execute while the security is halted. After trading resumes, the price may be materially different. Thin trading can also produce larger slippage and a longer wait for a limit order.

Limit-price protection and rejected orders
NSE applies limit-price-protection (LPP) checks to prevent an activated SL-limit order from entering at an extreme price. The post-trigger validation can reject a buy price above the applicable high LPP limit or a sell price below the applicable low LPP limit. NSE advises avoiding extreme prices and keeping the difference between trigger and limit reasonable to reduce rejection instances.
If the order is rejected, read the rejection reason in the order book. Correct the trigger-limit relationship, bring the limit inside the permitted range, confirm the tick size and price band, and submit a new order only after checking that the position is still open. Do not repeatedly place orders without checking whether an earlier attempt was accepted.
Why a stop-loss may not execute at all
- The trigger was never reached: A quote moving near your level is not enough; the LTP must satisfy the exchange condition.
- The market jumped past an SL limit: Once released, the order behaves like an ordinary limit order and needs a matching price.
- The order was rejected: LPP, tick-size, price-band, quantity, margin or product restrictions can prevent acceptance or activation.
- The security was halted: Trading cannot match orders during the halt.
- The order was not valid for the session or segment: Stop-loss orders are not allowed in the NSE pre-open session, and order types differ by segment.
- The quantity was already changed: A prior partial fill, manual trade or corporate-action adjustment can make the original quantity inaccurate.
Trading-session and validity checks
NSE’s pre-open documentation excludes special-term orders such as stop-loss orders from the pre-open session. A stop-loss submitted for a later regular session may be accepted or queued according to the broker’s validity rules, but the exact treatment is platform-specific.
Before relying on an overnight or multi-day order, check the current order ticket and the broker’s help page for:

SL or SL-M: a decision framework
Prefer SL when price control is essential
Use SL when receiving a price no worse than your limit is more important than certainty of exit. This is appropriate when you can tolerate the position remaining open and have a documented plan for a gap or unfilled order. Keep the limit far enough from the trigger to accommodate normal movement, while staying within exchange validation limits.

Use SL-M only when execution priority is acceptable
Where the segment supports it, SL-M removes the need to choose a limit and generally gives execution priority after the trigger. The trade-off is that the fill can be unexpectedly poor in a rapid move, thin market or gap. It is not available for NSE options, so selecting it for an options order is not an option.
Do not treat either type as insurance
SEBI’s investor education material describes the conversion and its limitation: “When the security / derivatives contract reaches the pre-determined price, or trades through such price, the stop loss order converts to a market/limit order and is executed at the limit or better.” The same material warns: “There is no assurance therefore that the limit order will be executable since a security / derivatives contract might penetrate the pre-determined price, in which case, the risk of such order not getting executed arises, just as with a regular limit order.”
Worked examples
Long equity position using SL
You own 100 shares. The current price is above your chosen risk level. You select Sell, enter 100 shares, choose SL, put the protective trigger below the current market, and set a sell limit below that trigger. Until the LTP reaches or falls below the trigger, nothing is released. After activation, buyers must meet your limit; if the market gaps below it, some or all of the order can remain open.
Short position using SL
You are short 100 shares. You select Buy, enter 100 shares, choose SL, set a trigger above the current price and a buy limit above the trigger. A rise to the trigger releases the limit order. If the price moves above the limit without matching, the short remains partly or wholly uncovered and must be managed under your trading plan.
Options position
Because NSE has discontinued SL-M for options, select the options segment’s supported SL-limit format. Set the trigger and a limit with enough room for the option’s potentially rapid price movement, while recognising that a larger gap does not guarantee a fill and can increase the price you may accept.
Pre-submission and post-trigger checklist
- Correct symbol, exchange and product selected.
- Buy or sell side matches the position being protected.
- Quantity equals the exposure you intend to close.
- Trigger direction is logical for that side.
- SL limit is on the executable side of the trigger and complies with the ticket’s tick and price rules.
- SL-M is used only where the segment currently supports it.
- Validity, margin and charges reviewed.
- Order status shows accepted rather than rejected.
- After activation, remaining quantity and net position checked for partial fills.
- A fallback plan exists for a gap, halt or unfilled limit order.
Bottom line
Use a sell stop below the market to protect a long holding and a buy stop above the market to cover a short. SL gives you a trigger and a limit but can remain unfilled; SL-M, where available, seeks market execution but can suffer severe slippage and is not available for NSE options. Verify the live broker ticket, avoid extreme trigger-limit combinations, and monitor the position after activation because no stop-loss guarantees an exit or a specific price.
